About

TaxiTaxi is an empire building game, the players task being to become the best taxi tycoon in real cities around the world. We have licensed the 3D Mapping Platform from the awesome folks at eeGeo which means that the game environment is based on real streets in real cities around the world and looks awesome!

Right, enough of the marketing blurb...

...where did the idea come from?

TaxiTaxi is an idea that came to use whilst enjoying the awesome route-drawing mechanic of Flight Control. Given my personally geekiness when it comes to maps, we got to thinking what would happen if we used a similar route-drawing mechanic in a real city map? Taxi control seemed to be the most appropriate way forward (after we discounted a fair few others) and TaxiTaxi the idea was born.

Initial idea of using open mapping data

We spent some time working on a prototype but we took the decision to develop this on PC using a mouse due to the mapping tech at the time. Whilst the concept works and people like it, the game would work so much better using a touch interface on a tablet.

Initial Mockups

We recently showed the prototype off during the ChinaJoy show that we were lucky enough to attend and everyone loved it and wanted to put it on their platform but unfortunately (and being brutally honest) we just don't have the funding to move it over to Android and iOS tablet devices ourselves -- unfortunately, we are part of the 99.9% of game developers that don't have yachts and beach huts somewhere sunny -- which is where the Kickstarter community can help us out (to create the game, not get us yachts and beach huts - they tend not to be as glamorous in the cold North Sea)!!

The Plan

Quite simply, the plan is to take the core of what we already have as a prototype, and move it over to Android and iOS using the eeGeo mapping platform technology (3D Mapping Platform licensed from eeGeo.com).

Whilst this is being done, we will flesh out the dropoff and pickup points and addresses and try to ensure they are evenly spread out and investigate the usual traffic jams and incident areas. We want to create time sensitive incidents such that roads around schools get more crowded at school times, main trunk roads get more crowded at rush hour and any Ikeas are permanently crowded (or is that just the UK?). We will also take a step back and create a number of different UI visual style treatments for our backers to feedback upon and choose their favourite.

Ideally, we want to be in a position to release an Alpha version as early as possible to get additional feedback on the control mechanic and ensure the difficulty curve is reasonably steady.

The version we will release due to this Kickstarter campaign will use the city of San Francisco as the environment.

Rewards

For those reward levels that provide Beta access, this is only for Android devices. To be honest, we would like to be able to offer our backers beta access on Apple devices to give us more feedback and thoughts, unfortunately however, Apple only allow us a certain number of devices per year which means we can only offer beta access to Android users.

Who Are We?

We are just a small independent developer based in Dundee, Scotland going by the name of Binary Pumpkin. The two co-founders formed the company in 2011 and our main titles to date have been based around Bingo. Pumpkin Bingo and it's sister titles have done reasonably well in terms of numbers with over 250,000 downloads so far and we are quite proud of making games that our mothers would like!

Prior to Binary Pumpkin, we co-founded another company in Dundee in 2006 called Cohort Studios and took the roles of CEO and CTO. We built this studio up to over 50 people at it's height and worked very closely with SCEE (Sony Europe) on titles such as their Buzz! Jr franchise and we also developed The Shoot which was an early Playstation Move title. In addition, we were outsourcers on Motorstorm and assisted the core team on both the code and art side of the project.

Going further back in time, we also spent time at Visual Science in Dundee, at Electronic Arts (both UK and Los Angeles) and at Psygnosis which eventually became Sony Europe.

Risks and challenges

Between the two company founders, we have over 30 years experience in the games industry in senior production, programming and design role working for big companies such as Psygnosis, Sony and EA - we have delivered many dozens of games on franchises such as Harry Potter, Formula One and Medal of Honor whilst working with massive budgets and teams.

However, we are not complacent. Even the smallest and simplest projects can go horribly wrong from time to time! With that in mind, we aim to use our usual production processes to ensure timely delivery with the least amount of risk exposure. Whilst we can work with most production processes, we are finding a combination of Agile/Scrum works for us best - prioritising our user-stories (user orientated features and requirements) to ensure that we deliver the best possible experience at the end of any project. Our team will be small (5-6 people) and therefore communication doesn't become the issue it can be when managing larger teams.

In terms of risks, there are a few but many of these have already been mitigated during our prototype development phase. We have licenses in place to use the 3D mapping technology and we have spent a lot of time working out the best way to be able to draw a route on screen whilst still being able to scroll and zoom. Whilst this solution has been developed for a mouse, we believe the same mechanic would work using touch and given this is our primary outstanding project risk, it will be high on our priority list.
