About this project
UPDATE #2: WE'RE SO BLOWN AWAY TO HAVE ALREADY PASSED $20,000 AND WE WANT TO GIVE YOU GUYS SOMETHING IN RETURN! IF WE REACH $25,000 WE WILL PRODUCE AN EASTSIDERS COMIC BOOK AND HAVE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOSHOOT OF THE CAST-- AND IF WE REACH $30,000 WE'LL PRODUCE A SPECIAL HOLIDAY EPISODE TO SERVE AS A BRIDGE TO (HOPEFULLY!) A SECOND SEASON!!
UPDATE: WE'VE HIT 15,000 IN JUST FOUR DAYS! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! IF WE CAN RAISE $20,000 THINGS GET REALLY EXCITING-- THIS MEANS PAY FOR THE CAST AND CREW AND WE CAN UP THE PRODUCTION VALUE, MAKING THE SHOW EVEN BETTER! PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD!
The first two episodes of Eastsiders: The Series were released in December (you can watch them below!) and we would very much like to bring you an entire season-- nine 10-15 minute episodes in total.
For more info, check out www.eastsiderstheseries.com!
Set in Los Angeles' iconic Silver Lake, Eastsiders follows a couple: Cal and Thom. They have problems. It's some really dramatic stuff. Thom is cheating on Cal. Cal knows, but can't bear the thought of losing Thom. Oh yeah, and they're gay, if you haven't already figured that out. But that's not a problem.
WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT OUR PROJECT
There isn't a lot of funding out there for GLBT content from traditional sources-- especially on the web. It's only through the support of people like you that these stories can be told. If a dark comedy about infidelity and the sad and funny messes we make out of our lives sounds up your alley then we're the project for you!
Eastsiders is a web series-- which is really cool because you can watch it wherever you want (as long as Internet is available), whenever you want. No setting the TiVo here; simply click a link, sit back and enjoy. This makes it really easy to watch, rewatch, share with your friends, and enjoy the show as much as physically possible. And we're streaming the episodes for free so that everyone can enjoy them!
We're very thankful to all the fans already talking about us and enjoying the show. We're even being recognized by some pretty amazing media sources including USA Today, After Elton, New Now Next, Frontiers, Instinct, Kenneth in the 212, Towel Road, Queerty, Queer Me Up, Queerty, HomoRazzi, The Huffington Post, Curbed LA, We Love Soaps, Soap Central, Michael Fairman and many more!
USA Today featured us as a web drama of the week, Instinct Mag is “enthralled,” AfterElton is “hooked,” declaring that the series is “sharp, well-written and acted, and shows once again why web series are the place for thoughtful, funny stories to be told, without the constraints of corporate involvement” and Frontiers LA calls the series “brilliant” and “emotionally riveting.”
We are excited to shoot a full season, but we need your help to make this happen! And of course, we'll show our gratitude for your help in the form of really cool perks, so you can prove that you were a part of making something special!
Team EastSiders is extremely grateful to each and everyone one of our supporters; we want to make this show the best it can be for you and if we work together, we are confident that Eastsiders will be an amazing show!
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
People pledge any amount and choose a reward. At the end of our Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $15,000 goal, then the credit cards of those who pledge are charged and we receive the funds to make the series. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided. If we exceed our $15,000 goal then the extra funds will be used to make the series even better. Aside from a 5% Kickstarter fee and a 3-5% Amazon credit card processing fee, all funds raised will be used directly in the production of the film.
Can I increase my pledge once it’s been made? YES! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
What happens if all the money isn’t raised in time? Unfortunately, NOTHING. If our entire $15k goal isn’t met before the deadline, no money changes hands and no series is made. We know you won't let this happen!
Can we exceed the goal? YES! What an amazing problem to have. Kickstarter will allow as much money as is given before the deadline. Even though $15k is already a lot of money, it is still bargain-basement for what we are trying to do, and more money would mean less begging, borrowing and stealing.
How do we contact you? Glad you asked! You can contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. We check it. We will get back to you. We promise!
Other ways to help: Spread the word! Tell everyone you know how awesome this project is. Share our website, like us on Facebook, blow up the Twittersphere with #TeamEastSiders, blog it, or promote it any way you can think of. Everything helps!
Risks and challenges
As with any production, there are inherent risks, especially given the accelerated timeline we are operating under. We want to go into production on the rest of the season in February, as soon as the campaign is completed.
The biggest challenge we face is the ambition of the project we are undertaking. We are essentially talking about shooting a feature film, from preproduction to production to post, for a fraction of the budget most features operate under. It is only because we have assembled a team of people that believe in this project enough to go above and beyond their jobs that we are able to do this. If setbacks arise we know that the team we have assembled can rise to the occasion because they've been able to do so in the past. We have a proven track record and we know that episodes 3-9 will be held to the same standards as episodes 1-2. We believe that we can make EastSiders a huge success and we hope you do to!
Where Does Your Money Go?
EQUIPMENT: Like the way our first two episodes look? We rented a lot of expensive things like lights and camera lenses to get the look of our show. To make the next seven episodes look the same, we'll need to rent everything again and for longer. We'll also need hard drives to store the footage.
INSURANCE: One of the biggest hidden costs of production is liability insurance-- we have to make sure we're covered in case anything happens to work with our locations, rental houses and unions!
CREW: We love our crew. They're some of the best people in the business and they work extremely hard because they believe in the project. We'd very much like to show just how much we appreciate them by putting a paycheck in their hands.
FOOD: Our cast and crew are human beings and they need to eat while on set. And we aren't very good at hunting and gathering.
POST PRODUCTION: Our editor, colorist, and sound mixer are magicians. Seriously though, we have no idea how they make our show look and sound the way that they do. That kind of magic doesn't just appear out of thin air.
FILM FESTIVALS: We'd love to submit the finished season to GLBT festivals across the country to screen it as a feature film!
