Yes. Yes, it is.
I ran into two problems: (1) The amazing, talented friend who helped with the original video was just too busy to lend his hand to the project this time around, and (2) I really, really dislike making videos. Seriously, that minute-long video is the product of an hour's worth of filming. I couldn't bring myself to subject anyone else to that kind of frustration...
So please forgive me. We're all afraid of something. For some people, it's clowns. For me, it's recording devices (cameras, video cameras, voice recorders, etc). And needles. I hate needles, too.
Plus, the video is still pretty accurate. Namely:
- the comic is (mostly) done - art is 100% complete, lettering is 90% complete, and I'm just waiting on the final few colored pages
- I'm just looking to raise money to fund a small print run
SO WHO AM I?
Well, aside from being a guy who hates video cameras, I'm also a guy who loves comics. And horror movies. And I'm a guy who's been working two jobs just to pay for this darn thing. Because I have a story to tell, and I need to tell it.
But I'm also a guy who's not above asking for some help from time to time. So here I am, asking for some help. Not to make the comic - I've got that covered - but rather, to print the comic. To turn this thing into something physical that I can unleash into the world.
REVIEWS for WITCH CREEK ROAD #1
"A clever poke at horror tropes, the comic creates a surprisingly rounded view of love, peer pressure, and the never-ending tedium of high school life on top of wonderful splatter-print of gore. With sharp art and witty dialogue, Witch Creek Road answers the question of what would happen if Mean Girls existed in the Evil Dead universe."
"Witch Creek Road is a blood-drenched ode to classic horror. It's a fun play on that classic trope where a group of sex-crazed teenagers head into the woods looking for a good time and find something horrifying instead. It's worth checking out to see the gorgeous artwork alone."
"Garth’s story flows beautifully, with the perfect blend of world building, mystery, and drama. Kenan’s art delivers a story that draws you in and punches you in the guts when you get too close. Sabrina’s colouring provides a tone of lurking darkness and suburbia nihilism contrasted by youthful optimism and energy. Execution of Witch Creek Road is perfect!"
“[The artwork is] really well done. Honestly something you would see from the Big Two.”
Witch Creek Road follows a group of high school seniors, and explores the consequences of taking the wrong road. At its core, it's survival horror, but it's also a story about love, acceptance, death and revenge. And sexy, flesh-eating demons. Because every story needs sexy, flesh-eating demons.
You can read the entire first issue on WEBTOONS or TAPAS - both of these sites have been optimized for reading on mobile devices. Or, for a more traditional comic experience, you can read Witch Creek Road on my personal website, releasingtheserpents.com.
"Wait, wait, wait! If I can read the comic for free, why am I backing?!"
The answer is: you don't have to. The comic will continue to be posted for free. But if you do back - and the PDF is only $1 - you'll receive a copy of issue 2 immediately after the Kickstarter is over and the reward surveys have been filled out. And once amb3r has finished with her colors, you'll receive an updated, full-color version of the issue. The pages I post online will only ever be in grayscale.
Art duties are being handled by the extremely talented Kenan Halilović. Every time he sends me a new page, it's like Christmas in my inbox - that's how good he is. Colors are by amb3r, who's been adding some awesome, gritty colors to Kenan's already spectacular line work.
(Note that, due to printing costs, the comic will be printed in grayscale; as previously mentioned, however, the PDF will be presented in glorious full color!)

Rounding out the team is Cindy Handoyo, who's providing the beautiful yearbook portraits that will appear on the Yearbook Trading Cards. You can get an idea of what they'll look like below, in the "Stretch Goal" section!
All Backers, unless you choose to opt out, will be listed as a Backer in the comic and on my website. New backers will be listed as Freshmen. Returning backers will be listed as Sophomores. It's a Yearbook theme!
DIGITAL: For just $1, you'll receive the issue 2 PDF - that's 31 full-color pages of beautifully drawn story, plus some additional pages.
DIGITAL CATCH-UP: For just $2, you'll receive both issues 1 and 2 PDFs - that's a whopping 62 full-color pages of story, plus additional pages. Where else are you going to get this kind of deal?!
DIGITAL+: For those of you interested in some of the physical rewards (specifically, the yearbook trading cards), but don't need the physical comic, then this is the level for you! Includes the issue 2 PDF.
DIGITAL+ CATCH-UP: Take the DIGITAL+ reward level, but add in the issue 1 PDF and the issue 1 yearbook trading cards (Sara, Betty and Abby).
Please note that you will have the option to have your physical comics signed by the author, if you don't mind me defacing your comic with my signature. And deface it, I will! This will be done for free, and with great pleasure. Sadly, due to geography, issues cannot be signed by the artist or the colorist.
PHYSICAL: A physical copy of the comic! There will be two shipping options available: the cheaper "in what condition will it arrive?" option, and the more expensive, "the post office will have to work extra hard to damage this" option. The cheaper option consists of the comic, bagged and boarded, and placed into an envelope; the more expensive option also consists of bagging and boarding the comic, but the envelope has been replaced by a bulletproof cardboard mailer. (Disclaimer: Not actually bulletproof.)
PHYSICAL CATCH-UP: If you missed the first issue, this is your chance to get both issue one and issue two!
LIMITED EDITION: Who doesn't love Limited Edition items? At this level, you'll receive an "Artist Edition" copy, which presents the comic in black and white, with no grayscale added. Enjoy Kenan's inks without any distractions! Unfortunately I'm only offering the more expensive shipping option for the Limited Edition, due to the fact that the print run on this version is VERY small - and I would assume anyone backing at this level would prefer their comic arrives safely, and in one piece.
SKETCH CARD: It's a sketch card from the writer! That's right! For those of you who enjoy collecting little pieces of original art, I will draw you something! And to be perfectly clear: these sketch cards are not being drawn by Kenan, the artist - that would make too much sense. They are being drawn by me, the writer. So don't expect much. (With regards to the sketch card, you will be given the option to make a request, or to let me draw whatever the hell I want. Letting me draw whatever I want will likely yield better results... but it's completely up to you).
$3000 - All backers will receive a “Witch Creek Road: Bonus Features” PDF for issue 1. This will include things like: stories of how the comic began; the original, first draft script of issue 1; process art for how pages progress from script to pencils to inks to colors and finally to complete, lettered pages; author commentary; etc
In short, if you enjoy the process of creating comics, and like getting a bit of “behind the scenes” info, then this stretch goal is for you!
Risks and challenges
As with anything, there is always risk. However, we've done our best to limit these risks by ensuring the vast majority of the work on this comic has already been done. At this point, art is 100% complete, lettering is 90% complete, and coloring is 65% complete.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
