This deck is the result of my love for Japanese culture and cardistry. Since I see cardistry as an art form, where you express yourself, I wanted to combine it with my other passion. That's how the idea for this deck was born. The result is a unique, yet simple deck of playing cards, made especially for cardists, but is also a great addition to collectors and magicians.
The whole deck consist of only two colors. White and Dark Red, which complement eachother very nicely. There are two circles (Ensō) placed on the back and in the middle of them you can find the letter for happiness (幸). Through history the circle motif has become a symbol for enlightenment, which to me, is at its core happiness itself.
I wanted the design to be simple, but unique, just like calligraphy, which looks simple at first glance, but once you look closer you can see how unique it actually is.
That is why the Shodou deck steps away from the classic pip format and features Japanese letters (kanji) from 1 to 10 on the faces.
The court cards are represented with the words Prince (Ouji), Princess (Oujo) and King (Ousama). These 3 words share the same Letter Ou (王) which enhances the unity of the court cards.
Because I always felt like the jokers are opposing the court, they are represented in this deck with the letter for Demon (Oni).
These are also the only cards, that have no color suit, which have been replaced with the letters for the 4 basic elements.
Spades = Earth (土）
Hearts = Water（水）
Clubs = Wind（風）
Diamonds = Fire（火）
Another unconventional part of this deck are the borders.
Since my favourite part of cardistry are fans, I designed the deck in a way, that it would emphasize them. That's why both the front
and back of the cards are half-bordered.
This makes fans and spreads look much more visual and interesting, which also helps you come up with new ideas.
The unique face design of the deck will also make the packets in your cuts stand out.
To me, the box always felt like an extension of the cards. That's why I put the back design of the cards on the box as well, which includes the half-border design.
But once you open the box, the cards welcome you to "Write Your Own Style" and be unique.
After trying out different kinds of stock and finishes, The one I liked the most is the Luxury stock and Royal finish by Hanson Chien Production Co.. Because of the stock, the cards are thin and the finish makes them feel broken in straight out of the box.
This makes fanning and cutting feel like a charm. On the other hand, the thinness of the deck makes bend moves, like the spring, much easier to perform.
There will be only 1000 decks printed, so if you wish to get one, this Kickstarter is the best and cheapest place to do it.
Shipping and Distribution
The distribution will be handled by Gamblers Warehouse, located in the US, which means the shipping to US will be FREE. Since the deck will be printed in Taiwan, people from Taiwan also get free shipping.
People from other countries will unfortunately have to pay a little extra for shipping. I tried to find the best and cheapest option possible, so there is no tracking number. If you wish for a shipping option with tracking, please contact me.
Along with the deck, I will also make 4 tutorials of my favourite moves.
The first move is called Carousel, a 3-packet cut, which is fast, spinny and comfy.
Second move is called Pedestal. A move with two fans, where the top fan is supported by the bottom fan.
I call the next move rainbow, because after a vertical spread, the cards spread in a wide arc, like a rainbow.
The final move is the Moon, where two halves form a circle like fan on your hand.
I will upload the tutorials on youtube throught the campaing, so they will be available to everyone!
