“South Dakota” is a unique film in which filmmaker Bruce Isacson intricately blends a narrative feature with compelling documentary elements. The film portrays two girls from different walks of life:
Barb is a real life "Juno" in South Dakota - a 14-year-old high school track star and cheerleader in love with her 15-year-old star athlete boyfriend - who allows a single moment of passion to change her life forever.
Chris is an African American teenager living on the streets of Philadelphia who is pregnant as a result of rape.
As each girl wrestles with her pregnancy, the film presents real-life documentary interviews with opposing views about a woman's right to choose. The emotional conclusion of each story leaves audiences with a profoundly new understanding of this vital issue. Many are calling “South Dakota” a “real-life JUNO.”

Howard Kazanjian is our executive producer. Howard produced many successful movies including “Star Wars – The Return of the Jedi” & “Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Bruce Isacson directed and wrote the screenplay to our film “South Dakota.” The cast in the film is an ensemble of terrific actors some of whom you might know like TESSA THOMPSON who was in “Colored Girls,” named one of the Hollywood's 9 Hottest Young Black Stars in Hollywood and NATE HARTLEY who was one of the young stars in “Drillbit Taylor” with Owen Wilson.
WHAT IS KICKSTARTER
Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. We are raising money to distribute our movie. Your pledges will help us raise the P&A Budget (Prints and Advertising Materials). This will commence our social network marketing campaign that we believe will take our trailer and website viral to attract a worldwide audience to our film, “South Dakota.” Most independent filmmakers cannot secure production financing, BUT WE HAVE! Our film is produced, completed, in the can. Moreover, most independent movies cannot get theatrical distribution. BUT WE HAVE! We can get as many theatres as we need, and with your financial support we will have the money to distribute and compete with major Hollywood Studio releases that spend tens-of-millions of dollars on their distribution that includes primetime commercials that cost four hundred thousand dollars for a fifteen second spot. We won't spend near as much on our distribution campaign, but we believe we will be very successful.

Our film is important because it opens dialogue on an overwhelming volatile issue; a woman’s right to choose, as well as teen pregnancy. There has not been enough education on either side of the issue offered in schools or in the home or in the media so that women and teenage girls with unplanned or unwanted pregnancies can make an intelligent decision on which course-of-action to take. When a girl has an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy most often her life is turned upside-down and the emotional pain that follows can be catastrophic to themselves as well as to their family and friends. SOME MORE ABOUT THE DRAMATIC STORY AND DOCUMENTARY FOOTAGE:
In both the Chris Story and the Barb Story, the girls deny their situation for too long as they avoid making the most important choice of their young lives. As Chris and Barb seek answers to help make their decision about having a baby or terminating the pregnancy, the film presents interviews with experts on those questions with opposing views about a woman’s right to choose.
As the stories unfold on the screen under Isacson’s direction of a talented cast, he simultaneously creates a fascinating mosaic of contradictory truths about the complex issues related to a woman’s right to choose. Through fast paced clips from documentary interviews with a wide range of political, scientific, legal and cultural experts who passionately share their views, Isacson assembles sound bites like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to accentuate the labyrinthine nature of the situation faced by each young woman. The emotional conclusion of each story leaves audiences with a profoundly new understanding of a woman’s right to choose.
Our director/producer Bruce Isacson and our crew filmed the narrative feature film in New York City and in Iowa, and with a very small crew Bruce filmed the documentary footage, traveling for more than two years to interview the most knowledgeable people, as well as personal stories on both sides of the issue. Some of the strongest pro-choice leader’s voices have been Gloria Allred, Frances Kissling, Alexander Sanger *, Peter Singer *, Lee Silver, and Dr. Wendy Savage. From the pro-life side we have Robert George, Bill Hurlbut, Bernard Nathanson * and Michael Schwartz.
* Alexander Sanger – Margaret Sanger’s grandson, who was a prior president of Planned Parenthood in New York City.
* Frances Kissling – Frances is a scholar and activist in the fields of religion, reproduction and women's rights. She was President of Catholics for a Free Choice (founded 1973) from 1982 until 2007. She is now a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.
