About this project
You Can Watch The OFFICIAL Trailer & A Personal Word From The Director About The Film Here:
“South Dakota” is a unique film in which filmmaker Bruce Isacson intricately blends a narrative feature with compelling documentary elements. The film portrays two girls from different walks of life:
Barb is a real life "Juno" in South Dakota - a 14-year-old high school track star and cheerleader in love with her 15-year-old star athlete boyfriend - who allows a single moment of passion to change her life forever.
Chris is an African American teenager living on the streets of Philadelphia who is pregnant as a result of rape.
As each girl wrestles with her pregnancy, the film presents real-life documentary interviews with opposing views about a woman's right to choose. The emotional conclusion of each story leaves audiences with a profoundly new understanding of this vital issue. Many are calling “South Dakota” a “real-life JUNO.”
Please see videos below of audience reaction to "South Dakota," including teenage girls who attended a screening in Sydney, Australia.
"South Dakota" swept major awards at the Los Angeles Reel FIlm Festival:
Howard Kazanjian is our executive producer. Howard produced many successful movies including “Star Wars – The Return of the Jedi” & “Indiana Jones – Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Bruce Isacson directed and wrote the screenplay to our film “South Dakota.” The cast in the film is an ensemble of terrific actors some of whom you might know like TESSA THOMPSON who was in “Colored Girls,” named one of the Hollywood's 9 Hottest Young Black Stars in Hollywood and NATE HARTLEY who was one of the young stars in “Drillbit Taylor” with Owen Wilson.
WHAT IS KICKSTARTER
Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. Every month tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, art, film, technology, design, food, and other creative fields. Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires. To date Kickstarter has secured over $300 Million Dollars.
We are raising money to distribute our movie. Your pledges will help us raise the P&A Budget (Prints and Advertising Materials). This will commence our social network marketing campaign that we believe will take our trailer and website viral to attract a worldwide audience to our film, “South Dakota.” Most independent filmmakers cannot secure production financing, BUT WE HAVE! Our film is produced, completed, in the can. Moreover, most independent movies cannot get theatrical distribution. BUT WE HAVE! We can get as many theatres as we need, and with your financial support we will have the money to distribute and compete with major Hollywood Studio releases that spend tens-of-millions of dollars on their distribution that includes primetime commercials that cost four hundred thousand dollars for a fifteen second spot. We won't spend near as much on our distribution campaign, but we believe we will be very successful.
Our Kickstarter goal is to raise $100,000. We are asking for your help by financially backing our project that will help distribute our film. In honor of your support we have created terrific product incentives that are listed on the right hand side of this Kickstarter.com page. While the product incentives listed are nominal compared to your pledge amounts, this is our way of saying thank you for your generous support of our monumental film. Tee shirts will be like the ones distributed at the first Teen Screen and our baseball cap will be like the one given to the crew during production. I am also offering my director’s chair that I used during the production of “South Dakota.” And of course we will have dvds and blu-rays and posters etc.
only allows a maximum pledge of $10,000, so we have higher-end offers on our website:
www.southdakotathemovie.com/paypal including a special thank you associate producer credit on the film and a special screening, in advance of the theatrical release of the movie, at a major movie theatre in your hometown for guests invited by you and our film company, Lionheart Movies.
The way Kickstarter works, you make a pledge, but you don’t send any money until we reach our goal. If we do not reach our goal you don’t send us anything.
Our film is important because it opens dialogue on an overwhelming volatile issue; a woman’s right to choose, as well as teen pregnancy. There has not been enough education on either side of the issue offered in schools or in the home or in the media so that women and teenage girls with unplanned or unwanted pregnancies can make an intelligent decision on which course-of-action to take. When a girl has an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy most often her life is turned upside-down and the emotional pain that follows can be catastrophic to themselves as well as to their family and friends. What better way to enlighten than by an entertaining movie, and that’s why we made “South Dakota.” Your contributions and support will help make a difference in many people’s lives.
- If you were moved by our movie trailer, and agree how important these issues are… YOU CAN HELP!
- If you are a teenager, or parent, adults of any age, a teacher, or in the work place, a celebrity, elected public official, YOU CAN HELP!
- YOU CAN HELP support our film and get involved in the discussion that will ultimately help teenage girls as well as women faced with unplanned pregnancies.
WE WANT "SOUTH DAKOTA" TO BE YOUR FILM AS MUCH AS IT IS OURS!
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW WE ARE HERE!
WE ARE LOOKING FOR 400 PEOPLE: TO SEND OUR TRAILER/KICKSTARTER LINK www.southdakotathemovie.com/help TO JUST 20 OF THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO WILL THEN SEND IT TO 20 OF THEIR FRIENDS AND THEN FOR THEM TO SEND IT TO 20 OF THEIR FRIENDS. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to ask any questions or to get more information and become involved. We check frequently and we will get back to you. We promise!
I AM THANKFUL AND HUMBLED BY YOUR GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS AND SUPPORT !!!
HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED
The money will be used to help pay our distribution costs that include P&A (prints and advertising) and also include a professional marketing team and for advertising costs such as online magazines and newspapers, Google and Facebook advertisement. Chris Cummings will be overseeing our Social Network Marketing Campaign. Chris is a fourteen-year veteran of the feature film industry, working with directors such as Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Tim Burton, Sam Mendes and the Coen Brothers, and many Oscar-winning cinematographers, editors, producers and stars. A partial list of his film credits include: Jarhead, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Big Fish, Road to Perdition, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, True Lies and Speed.
IF WE RAISE MORE THAN OUR GOAL, THE MONEY WILL BE USED TO FURTHER FUND OUR DISTRIBUTION COSTS and retain Paul Lauer founder of Motive Entertainment. The following is a quote from Dr. James Dobson, founder of “Focus On The Family” and his new radio show “Family Talk.”I have been given the privilege of seeing the soon-to-be-released film, South Dakota, and am pleased by the quality of the production and the message it conveys. The storyline plays the abortion issue down the middle by depicting parallel stories of two pregnant young unmarried women, one who keeps her baby and the other who does not. I think the approach taken in South Dakota is a best way to go, and I strongly recommend it to viewers on both sides of the issue.”
Here’s what educational leaders are saying about the film:
"I was extremely impressed by the ‘South
Dakota' movie. I admire your efforts to get this important conversation out
in the open. I have four children (pre-teen and teen) all of whom would learn
valuable perspectives from watching this movie. Every young person should see
this movie and contemplate the impact of their choices related to dating and
sexuality. I hope other school superintendents and principals will get involved
with this important project."
- Dr. Gary W. Woods, Superintendent Beverly Hills Unified School District
“ ‘South Dakota’ is a triumph. You succeeded in being even handed. There was much to think about and I found myself reflecting on the film all evening. I think the film is a superb treatment of the topic and I wish you well with it.”
- Mary Anne Hedrick, La Reina High School, Thousand Oaks, CA
SOME MORE ABOUT THE DRAMATIC STORY AND DOCUMENTARY FOOTAGE:
In both the Chris Story and the Barb Story, the girls deny their situation for too long as they avoid making the most important choice of their young lives. As Chris and Barb seek answers to help make their decision about having a baby or terminating the pregnancy, the film presents interviews with experts on those questions with opposing views about a woman’s right to choose.
As the stories unfold on the screen under Isacson’s direction of a talented cast, he simultaneously creates a fascinating mosaic of contradictory truths about the complex issues related to a woman’s right to choose. Through fast paced clips from documentary interviews with a wide range of political, scientific, legal and cultural experts who passionately share their views, Isacson assembles sound bites like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle to accentuate the labyrinthine nature of the situation faced by each young woman. The emotional conclusion of each story leaves audiences with a profoundly new understanding of a woman’s right to choose.
Our director/producer Bruce Isacson and our crew filmed the narrative feature film in New York City and in Iowa, and with a very small crew Bruce filmed the documentary footage, traveling for more than two years to interview the most knowledgeable people, as well as personal stories on both sides of the issue. Some of the strongest pro-choice leader’s voices have been Gloria Allred, Frances Kissling, Alexander Sanger *, Peter Singer *, Lee Silver, and Dr. Wendy Savage. From the pro-life side we have Robert George, Bill Hurlbut, Bernard Nathanson * and Michael Schwartz.
* Alexander Sanger – Margaret Sanger’s grandson, who was a prior president of Planned Parenthood in New York City.
* Frances Kissling – Frances is a scholar and activist in the fields of religion, reproduction and women's rights. She was President of Catholics for a Free Choice (founded 1973) from 1982 until 2007. She is now a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania.
* Bernard Nathanson – Originally a pro-choice activist, and one of the founders of NARAL Pro-choice America, but with the development of Ultra Sound in the 70’s became a pro-life activist and directed and narrated the film, “The Silent Scream.”

Risks and challenges
There is no guarantee that any movie, no matter how many stars are attached, will be successful at the box office, which is based primarily upon its acceptance by the public, which cannot be predicted. The commercial success of a motion picture also depends upon the quality and acceptance of other competing films released into the marketplace at or near the same time, as well as the success of the movies distribution campaign, which also cannot be predicted.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
