About this project
Why the folk mug?
We have been using mason jars as drinking glasses for years at our house. We love them for their classic style, durability and made-in-America, folk-sy charm. One night, craving a cup of tea, we filled a mason jar with herbs and added boiling water. After a few minutes, we clumsily held the piping hot jar with a dish towel and tried to strain the herbs out, spilling water and burning ourselves in the process. A light bulb went off! What if the mason jar could have a removable holder that would allow for easy handling? And so the Folk Mug was born.
Why did we name our product Folk Mug?
The word folk is defined as:
Of, occurring in, or originating among the common people: folk culture; a folk hero. Down-to-earth, open-hearted.
The Mason Jar has become part of American folklore. Nearly everyone has at least one mason jar floating around their house. They are a tool of the common person, useful for canning, fermenting and storing food, or as drinking glasses and mugs. Sometimes inherited from parents or grandparents, sometimes purchased new, the mason jar is durable and made in the U.S.
In keeping with the Mason Jar's iconic design, we wanted to create a companion product affordable enough for the common person while honoring the traditional style and simplicity of classic Americana design aesthetic,
A nostalgic, economic, alternative to plastic drinking bottles,The Folk Mug can take you from your morning Cup of Joe to your evening whiskey 'round the fire, it's a mug for the people, by the people. From us folks to you folks!
What is the folk Mug?
The folk mug is a travel mug system which transforms a mason jar into a mug that can handle hot or cold beverages. The folk mugs are laser cut out of stainless steel, rolled and bent into final shape and then spot welded together. The wooden handle is then attached with stainless steel screws. The stainless steel mug design acts as a coaster to protect table surfaces and is both durable and easy to clean. Of high quality material, the wooden handle allows for comfortable holding and eliminates heat transfer from hot drinks to sensitive hands. Folk mugs come in 2 sizes- small, made to fit a 16 oz. classic mason jar, and large, made to fit a 32 oz. classic mason jar. All stages of production take place right here in Lancaster PA!
The folk mug is already generating excitement here in Lancaster, and a local restaurant is even using them in place of traditional mugs. But, because we are dedicated to manufacturing locally, we need to produce a large quantity of mugs at one time to bring production costs down. This campaign will allow us to get mugs into the hands of the people who want them, for the lowest cost possible, while supporting local manufacturing companies.
Risks and challenges
Fortunately, we have already done the leg work of making connections with local manufacturers during the prototype development process. So the challenge won't be finding manufacturers, but sustaining clear communication between our company and theirs.
We also look forward to embracing the challenge of larger scale production and distribution, which we haven't had a chance to experience before.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
