The Next Step
A Photo Exhibition
I work at night, in the dark. I discover and am surprised by the absence of light and noise. Using only flickers of a flashlight, I paint with light. My work is not constructed, but emerges as life presents itself moment to moment.
When working with a model I allow them to move on their own accord for the most part, rather than tell them what to do. In this way both our intuition is heightened. And what emerges is often fresh and surprising.
When working without a model I move within the space, allowing the space to inform me as if it were a living being.
The photos are one shot only, set on long exposure, and have not been constructed in photoshop.
- What came before: Absence Presence
In December 2007, I was asked to participate in an exhibition honoring the Day of Memory, which was held at the auditorium in Rome, Italy. I was staying in the neighborhood of the Jewish Ghetto then, and spent many hours walking the streets in preparation for the exhibition. I sensed that the streets themselves would let me know what they wanted me to express – that I would find my inspiration there – since it was there where the Jews were forced to evacuate their homes during the Holocaust.
Coming from a Jewish family, I was interested in exploring the historical events that took place in those streets during the Holocaust, from an artist perspective. From there, the exploration of absence and presence was born, and continued in various settings including in my loft in Brooklyn. This exploration culminated in a one-woman show in May 2011 at the MUSEO COMUNALE DI ARTE MODERNA in Senigallia, Italy.
You can see the catalogue online here, at the end of the page, where it says "scarica il catalogo della mostra": http://www.iofotoreporter.it/mostredett.php?id=157&id_cat=5

- The Next Step
My last photo shoot shows a woman uncertain about her next step. I feel the same. Human beings grope in the dark, we want to move forward, we sense what’s ahead, but are uncertain exactly where to place our feet. We hover.
My new work continues my lifelong artistic interests: What manifests from the unknown, the invisible? How to trust it?
- The Next Step for The Next Step
I have a solo show coming up at the Yes Gallery in Brooklyn. I need funds to print the photos in large format (approximately 60 x 44 inches) and as archival fine art pigmented prints, which assures longevity. This is an expensive process, ranging from approximately $400 - $550 per print. The mounting is an additional $200 - $300.
The The Next Step's evolution is in the process, but one thing is certain; it requires funds in order to make this happen.
Thank you for your help in bringing these works to life.
