UPDATE: NOV. 04- JUST ADDED!
UPDATE: NOV. 02- NEW RETAILER LEVEL ADDED!
Here's exciting news for retailers! I've added a level specifically for you, in which you can get 3 copies of all three volumes of WAR MONSTERS, PLUS triple the Stretch Goals, for only $63 (plus shipping)! All you have to do is make your pledge, then send me a private message with information about your store (name, address, phone number), and you'll be good to go. In addition, verified retailers can take advantage of the HUGE list of Add-On books, with no limit on quantity, all at a 50% discount! If you need more information, just send me a message. NOTE: This offer is for U.S. retailers only. I did the math to calculate what it would cost to ship 9 trade paperbacks internationally, and shipping alone would be around $60, which makes the whole discount pointless, unfortunately.
UPDATE: NOV. 5- STRETCH GOAL #3 UNLOCKED!
DAIKAZU fans have been asking for these for 30 years, and they're finally here- WAR MONSTERS trading cards! These three promo cards were created exclusively for this campaign, and will be the first DAIKAZU trading cards ever produced! And look at those Stretch Goals amounts- With dollar thresholds grouped so closely together, we should unlock the entire three card set in no time!
UPDATE: OCT. 30- STRETCH GOAL #1 UNLOCKED!
Oh, yes, we're rolling now! The Daikazu Oracle Card is only the first of many Stretch Goal rewards that I have planned, so please continue to share this campaign with others, and a huge THANK YOU to all of you who have helped to make this Kickstarter such a success!
KAIJU FANS REJOICE! DAIKAZU IS BACK!
Okay, so what is "Daikazu?" If I gave you the full explanation, it would read like a dissertation on the history of independent comics, which is an interesting story, but not really important right now, so I'll simplify:
I attended the Joe Kubert School back in the mid-1990s, and it was shortly after that the release of the first issue of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" made comic book distributors realize that there was an audience for small, independently produced, black and white comics. I've always loved comics and movies that feature gigantic creatures, most notably the popular "kaiju" films from Toho Studios, so in 1987 I jumped into the fray, writing, drawing, lettering, and helping with the printing of my own kaiju comic, DAIKAZU. Although I had zero professional experience, I was lucky enough to have DAIKAZU accepted for distribution to comic stores worldwide by several different distributors, and so, from 1987 to 1991, I published eight, black and white issues of DAIKAZU, followed by a three-issue, black and white mini-series titled DAIKAZU VS. GUGORON.
When I wrapped the final issue of that series, I decided to take a break from giant monsters to do a good, old-fashioned, erotic horror tale called WIDOW. If you follow my work, you know where things went after that! Long story short, I never did return to Daikazu and crew, but after 30 years, comics fans still fondly remember those crazy, earthshaking tales, and often ask, "When are you bringing DAIKAZU back?"
THAT TIME IS NOW!
In 2014, I returned to self-publishing with my DAUGHTERS OF THE DARK ORACLE series, then re-released all of my WIDOW material in trade paperback format, so now it's time to unleash the behemoths! WAR MONSTERS is a collection of three trade paperbacks that will be sold in comic shops worldwide beginning with #1 in November. Now, if you know anything about the current comic book market, you know that sales aren't so great right now, with indy comics barely making enough to break even... So enter Kickstarter! Every one of my store releases is preceded by a Kickstarter campaign, the purpose of which is to generate the funds to pay for the printing and production of each series, and this one is no different. Even though these are reprint books, and all of the writing and art is completed, every one of the nearly 400, thirty year-old pages has to be scanned, painstakingly cleaned up, and tweaked by the lovely Natalie Jane to achieve the best possible print quality.
WHAT'S THE STORY ABOUT?
After a nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in the Pacific Ocean, then completely disappears without a trace, it is curiously found within the jungle of a small, uninhabited island by a group of researchers from San Diego, California. But they're not alone on the island, as they discover that the tropical paradise houses the secret, underground base of geneticist Vincent Hellbender, a madman who wants to rule the world with an army of gigantic, mutant beasts. There is only one who can possibly stop the rampage of the giants before they crush the world under their massive, clawed feet- an ancient "god," the mighty, reptilian Daikazu!
WAR MONSTERS Volume 1 introduces our human cast as they fight for survival on both the tropical island and in the heart of Tokyo, and Daikazu confronts the incredible menaces of the crab-like Rhendar, and Tetralon, the titanic land shark. (Reprints DAIKAZU #1-5.)
In Volume 2, the globe-trotting continues as Daikazu is mysteriously drawn to Egypt, where not even jets nor tanks can stop him from destroying one of the oldest of Earth's pyramids. But when he completes his task, he'll have to face the combined fury of both Pharon and Grinzon! (Reprints DAIKAZU #6-8.)
WAR MONSTERS Volume 3 moves the story to Portugal, where Daikazu mysteriously surfaces in the shadow of the Rock of Gibraltar. Followed by scientist Martin Mariner and his super-suited "Dogs," and Takeshi Soenso and the crew of the giant robot Titan EX-3, Daikazu's true intent will soon be learned when he faces his greatest foe yet, the gigantic, winged Gugoron! (Reprints DAIKAZU VS. GUGORON #1-3.)
SPECIAL NOTE: The black and white DAIKAZU series was my very first, published work, so be prepared to see the crude origin of my current art style. It's rough, but it's quite interesting to see the leaps and bounds the quality took from one issue to the next. And with my application of zip-a-tones and hand lettering (!), it doesn't get any more raw and indie than this!
WHAT DO YOU GET?
As with all of my Kickstarters, what you'll get here are limited edition collectibles that you won't find anywhere else, so I've created what I think are three of the coolest variant editions I've ever offered: Japanese language cover editions of all three volumes, gorgeously colored by Ceci de la Cruz!
But you guys know me- I never settle on boring, bland Kickstarters that offer comics and very little else. I like to spice things up with great collectibles, so I've pulled out all the stops with the Kaiju Preservation Initiative Membership Kit!
The Kaiju Preservation Initiative is a fun, Facebook group that I created, designed to celebrate the first rulers of the Earth. You can find out more at here! T-shirts will be available in all mens sizes, and the Membership Certificate will be signed by Mike Wolfer (me).
Now- let's have a look at the rewards levels, shall we?
(If you select the Two Volume level, you'll be asked which two volumes you would like in your backer survey, so you don't need to decide which two you want until after the campaign ends.)
These two levels are for the serious comic collectors out there!
Here's two slightly larger graphics, so that you can get a better look at the original art pieces. They're kaijutastic!
OH, YES, THERE ARE ADD-ONS!
Add-Ons are various items that you can add to your rewards package that are not included in any of the pledge levels. To do an Add-On, simply add the cost of the item to your pledge amount (either before or after you pledge- you can always adjust the amount later), then send me a message here on Kickstarter to tell me what item(s) you would like added. It's that simple! There's a whole slew of my previous releases available in both print and digital editions:
And what would a Mike Wolfer Entertainment be without Oracle Cards? This ever increasing set of 5.5" x 8.5" Tarot-style cards feature a huge array of my characters, and come with an instruction booklet. Build your own custom set, or get then entire set all at once!
Now, you might be asking yourself: Why is Mike offering Oracle Cards when there aren't any War Monsters Oracle Cards being made available? I can answer that with two simple words: Stretch Goals! *wink*
So there you have it! As always, I would like to thank everyone who has helped make Mike Wolfer Entertainment such a success because without Kickstarter- without YOU specifically- I wouldn't be able to keep doing what I'm doing, and that's creating all-new, all-creepy comics for your enjoyment. Releasing all of the previous DAIKAZU adventures in trade paperback format has been something that I've wanted to do for a long time, but if the response to this campaign is a positive one, brand NEW adventures will be on the way! Please share this campaign on social media, wherever kaiju lovers congregate, and remember: They were here first!
Risks and challenges
All rewards will begin shipping in February 2017. To prevent damage, items are shipped in either sturdy, cardboard "flash mailers," or in securely-packed cardboard boxes, depending on the number of items you are receiving.
