“This is simply put, a perfect introduction to the character of Ragdoll. The artwork is beyond drop dead GORE-geous… Visually stunning… Looks like it was torn from the pages of a Warren or Skywald book. This book just made my eyes drool.”

THE HISTORY: Originally published in 1998 by Avatar Press in RAW MEDIA QUARTERLY, THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL is a seven-chapter tale of horror and retribution from beyond the grave, with glorious, fully-toned black and white interior art. Written and illustrated by Mike Wolfer, best known for his writing on such horror titles as LADY DEATH, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, Warren Ellis' GRAVEL and Garth Ennis' STITCHED, this is the first time that the RAGDOLL saga has been collected into a trade paperback. But this isn't the same story that it used to be! In its first incarnation, THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL was "adults only," but the explicit scenes have been expunged and replaced with all-new art, chapters have been expanded with new pages, and a shocking, twist ending has been created which puts a whole new spin on the tale of the patchwork princess! In addition, because of the addition of new art and pages, the story has been rewritten to accommodate those changes, with all-new lettering by Natalie Jane. To complete the package, the 3 variant covers for this tale of terror showcase the breathtakingly vibrant color work of Ceci de la Cruz.. But be warned: Although the story is now "R" instead of "X," THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL still contains copious amounts of nudity and graphic, gory violence.
WHY KICKSTARTER? Because this is an incredible opportunity not only for me to be able to fund a project which I absolutely love, but also for comic fans to be directly involved with the production of the kind of work which they love to read! Since all of the work is completed on THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL and I was already paid once for it years ago, I'm not looking to generate a "page rate" for myself to keep me going while I work. And that's why my goal is so low for this graphic novel: I'm just looking to cover the production costs of the trade paperback and the rewards. (And if there's anything left over, Natalie Jane certainly deserves payment for her wonderful lettering work, and I can consider myself "paid" for all of the new material I wrote and illustrated for this volume. That's fair, right?)
OH, THOSE REWARDS: I've watched several Kickstarters by other creators, and have found that the column down the right side of this page can get downright confusing. I've tried to avoid that by making my rewards as simple as possible, but it's still a big mess. If you're a bit unsure about what's what and what you want, you might want to refer to the handy graphics I've posted below, which simplifies many of the levels. Of course, there are other levels with other rewards mixed-in, but this might help to clarify all of that crazy text you see to the right:
WHAT'S THE STORY ABOUT? In the late Eighteenth Century, nestled within a remote region of the Carpathian Mountains, punctuated by lush forests and quaint villages, something waits in the darkness, biding its time until it can exact bloody vengeance upon those who once violated it. That "thing" is Ragdoll, an inhuman creature created by the hand of man, yet possessing supernatural powers from beyond the grave. And her quest is both horrifying and heartbreaking: Composed of the remnants of an untold number of murdered women, Ragdoll's body retains the souls and divine essences of those whose lives were cut short, and she will stop at nothing to bring a gory, poetic end to each murderer of the women from whom she was constructed!
"IF I DON'T GET IN ON THE KICKSTARTER, WHERE CAN I FIND 'THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL?'" That's a good question, Mike Wolfer. I'm glad that you asked! Currently, I don't have plans to distribute internationally, but I might eventually try to make an arrangement with Diamond Comic Distributors and other comic book distribution companies to get the books onto store shelves. And there's always digital download options from companies specializing in that, which I'm now working on. But for now, and for this first foray into Kickstarter-funded self-publishing, I'll just be selling the Retail Edition of THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL through mail order, Amazon.com, and in person at conventions. The whole reason that I'm doing this Kickstarter is so that I can generate the funds to print a healthy stock of books, and Natalie Jane and I can start hitting the con circuit like I used to do way, way back in the day. I hope that we'll be able to meet in person in the foreseeable future in a city near you so that you can let me know what you thought of the book!
"WHAT MAKES THE REWARDS SO SPECIAL?" I thought you might ask that, Mike. Not only do some levels include one-of-a-kind, original interior and cover art, but you can also get your books personalized at various levels with custom-drawn head sketches inside your book. But those Kickstarter Exclusive Cover and Art Deco Editions will ONLY be available as rewards through Kickstarter, and will NOT be sold anywhere else by me. The Stretch Goal art prints (if we get that far) will be available for sale by me at conventions, but those which you receive as rewards will be SIGNED and NUMBERED, with that number limited to the exact number of contributors who receive these rewards.
"HOW CAN I KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU FOR UPDATES ON FUTURE RELEASES, LIKE THE NEXT CHAPTER OF THE 'RAGDOLL' SAGA?" Yet another good question, Mike. This whole Kickstarter thing is a big experiment for me, to see just what kind of reader support I have and if it's a viable publishing option. If this Kickstarter is successful, I'll be launching a web site specifically for my work, but right now the best way to stay in touch with me is on Twitter at @WolferMike, email me at email@example.com, or find me on Facebook here: www.facebook.com/thecurseofragdoll www.facebook.com/theofficialmikewolfer
Thank you SO much for your support, and I hope that you love reading THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL as much as I did creating it. And remember... There's MUCH more story to come if we reach the goal!
Risks and challenges
Unlike many comic projects on Kickstarter, THE CURSE OF RAGDOLL will have a quick delivery window because all of the art and lettering are nearly completed on all 96 pages, so there won't be a 6 months or 1 year wait on this one- My turnaround window will be no more than 60 days after the Kickstarter campaign ends!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
