WHAT IS VICI?
The name of our app, VICI, comes from the famous latin phrase “Veni, vidi, vici”, meaning “I come, I see, I conquer”. VICI offers Scavenger hunt tours with different themes tailored for both tourists and locals of a city. Like a Scavenger hunt, you need to gather a list of items within a time limit, ranging from 24 hours to one week. Unlike a normal Scavenger hunt, the items on the list are fun places and great restaurants to go in a city.
By accomplishing a hunt, you will receive even more discounts and will be eligible for a raffle of a big prize offered by our sponsors from local businesses. The prizes are huge - a round-trip flight ticket to Hawaii or two football game tickets or equivalent.
But this is not the only exciting part. All the tasks on the hunt list have unbelievable discounts - unlike traditional Scavenger hunt games where you compete with the others, you will fully enjoy the experience of discovering new locations.
We are sponsored by some most awesome local businesses - restaurants, museums, coffee shops, and all kinds of fun places. They give us discounts in exchange for your visits. But the selection of our hunt list is not sponsorship-oriented - we only pick places with real fun and special activities with positive user reviews.
The app is totally free, but we decided to offer limited free hunts for new users. To ‘unlock’ additional hunts, a user needs to accomplish the hunts given to him when he starts using the app. Alternatively, he can use in-app purchase to skip the starting hunts and ‘unlock’ more. The reason we choose not to open all hunts unconditionally is to make sure that everyone who joins a hunt will commit to participating in it. This will help better organize our resources and set expectations for businesses. And of course, by referring a friend, you can also get more free hunts!

HOW DO WE GET SPONSORS
Our team will design some possible hunts based on local’s reviews and recommendations, and approach the local businesses. We have a few promotions to encourage the good-reviewed businesses to join our app. For example, as a business participating in the hunt for the first time, we do not charge any fee, and even give them subsidies for giving exclusive discounts. For a business, participating in the hunt will definitely promote the store and raises the sales. We believe by doing this for the first phase, other businesses notice the success and will also try out.
We are not looking to build a basement-quality app, rather our goal is to build something not just fun to play with but that also works reliably for our users., We also want to develop a business model where we can maintain its quality as we roll out new features and functionality. Additionally, we want to prepare ourselves for your feedback. This means taking your ideas and criticisms, and using them to improve the product. To achieve this, we need your support for the expenses including compensation for our designer, developer and testers; marketing and legal fees and maintenance fees. Currently, We are building the front end of the app, and we need your pledge to give it a polished look, complete the back end, run user testing of the beta version, and develop the website plug-in.
We need your help - we are grateful for every $1 pledged!
What if we raise more than $10,000? We would be extremely grateful and thank you all so much for your generous help. We will use the money to market more and get better discounts from businesses. If we have enough fund, we will also build the Android and Windows Phone version of VICI.
$15,000 - Android app
$20,000 - Windows Phone app
WHO ARE WE?
We are five students from Carnegie Mellon University. We formed this great idea based on a class project, and are eager to carry it long.
Lillie and Ziyu work closely on the user interface design and packaging of VICI, to make it both visually appealing and easy to use. Lillie is a super skillful industrial designer studying Industiral Design at CMU. She designs the app interface, branding materials and makes product images. Ziyu is a graduate student studying at Entertainment Technology Center at CMU. She shoots videos and also help with the app interface design.
Troy works on the development of the app. He is a very experienced developer, and now a graduate student under Language Technology Institute of CMU. He just accepted an offer from LinkedIn as a software developer.
Joheun is responsible for making the business plan, including the value diagram and growth hypothesis. Also, she works on the marketing of our app. Joheun is a junior double majoring in Psychology and Human-Computer Interaction.
Shuangshuang is the User Experience Designer on the team. Her job is to create the awesomeness of VICI’s user experience, working closely with the designers and developer. She is a graduate student majoring in Human-Computer Interaction at CMU.
Although we share different responsibilities, as a student team, we all contribute our intelligence and hard work to the all parts of this project, creating the final awesome product of VICI.

Risks and challenges
We have been working on this project for the entire Spring semester, and have received many feedback and critiques from experienced professors, industry senior designers and our peers. And we will continuously receive supports and advices from them throughout the project. Therefore, we are confident that our app is and will be on the right track. Currently, we have finished the interface design of all the pages and have a preliminary working prototype. We will focus on developing and user testing in the Summer. We have an experienced developer and a few professional user experience practitioners, so we can guarantee that the app will be launched with a good quality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
