LETS KEEP GOING!
Thanks to the support of folks like you, we have raced past our initial goal and are ready to reach even further! $7,000 was the bare minimum we needed to make this project happen. By stretching our goal to $10,000 we will be able to create a richer experience for you, and even pay everyone a little more. Here's where the additional funds will go:
- Paying Ryan, our composer, who has initially donated his services
- Crafting custom costumes for our special guest dancers
- Boosting every collaborator's fee
- Purchasing additional curtains to create some theater magic.... I won't give away any surprises
THANK YOU for helping us get this far. We are grateful, amazed, and excited to keep going!
"... a movement vocabulary that literally vibrates at the intersection of classicism and pop action, like a slam-dancing sarabande."
— Sandra Kurtz, Seattle Weekly
A Dance for Dark Horses is a dance for everyone. It combines the things we all love to watch: humor, physicality, rhythmic music, and a story about a group of underdogs. It’s rigorous, it’s cheeky, it’s alone-in-your-room-groove-your-heart-out dancing — all in an effort to leave the audience (you!) feeling enlivened and electric.
** All donations are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE through our fiscal sponsor: Velocity **
Dark Horses is premiering March 2018. I have the rare honor to make this dance through Velocity’s Made in Seattle program, which is designed to boost choreographers onto the national stage. It's my first ever evening-length work, and is based on a 3-year process of exploring success, failure, and determination though dance.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Dance is a wonderfully collaborative art. Although Velocity is providing production support, space, and mentorship I am responsible for paying my collaborators - this is why I need your help. 100% of your donation will go towards paying these artists.
TURN YOUR DOLLARS INTO DANCE - COMMISSION US!
In addition to your $$$, we want your help with creating movement. For every $100 you donate I will choreograph 8 counts of choreography inspired by a word of your choice. Here's how it works:
1. You donate any increment of $100.
2. I collect a word from you that you want turned into dance.
3. I create movement based on your word, and send you a video. For every $100 you get 8 counts of dancing.
4. We put as many of these moves as possible into the final piece.
5. You come to the show and try to spot your moves!
Art is important. And artists need to be supported! With the show just a few months away, I'm hard at work creating material with my amazingly talented collaborators:
AMIYA BROWN (Lighting Designer)
SHANE DONOHUE (Dancer)
RYAN HUME (Composer)
ERIN McCARTHY (Dancer)
ALEXANDER PHAM (Dancer)
JEFFREY + JULIANA SHIRBOURN / JOLIE JOLI (Costume Designers)
** AND these special guest dancers added after we made the video **

"She's making a name for herself as she churns out balletic parodies to nostalgic ’90s synth beats. Lusk’s bone-dry humor is delivered via sharp-as-a-tack choreography."

Risks and challenges
With the responsibility of raising the funds to pay my collaborators, I face the risk of not fully compensating them. It's important to me to pay the artists that add their creativity and intellect to my project. As the cost of living sky rockets in Seattle, it is more crucial than ever to support our artists AND keep them in this city that thrives on the vibrancy and creativity they bring.
Sharing my work with all of you is the reason I make dance, and bringing you more into the process with this campaign feels really good. We can’t wait to share the magical evening we’ve made for you.
