About this project
WE ACHIEVED OUR GOAL OF 10.000 AND WE STILL HAVE 5 DAYS LEFT!!!
We are totally amazed by this support! After struggling for so long to get this project funded and to keep it going even when no funds were coming in, it is great to be able to plan the final stages of production.
10.000$ was our low-end goal, in order to pay the postproduction expenses. So as we have 5 days left, we want to encourage all the people to keep on supporting this project.
With a bigger budget we can:
-have a higher quality postproduction
-have reserved money for sending copies to festivals, broadcasters, etc.
-create a really powerful website, with all the not included footage, messages to/from India of all the protagonists, etc.
-have more great backers of the project!!!
so, please, KEEP ON SUPPORTING. Make possible independent cinema.
We are very greatfull to all of you.
Yes, we're almost there. After 3 years of filming on location, this gripping totally independent feature documentary is almost done. Basically, we urgently need to finish the last 3 weeks of editing plus image and sound post production, which includes the salaries for the professionals involved. Help us and become part of this fascinating project.
About the funding...embarking yourself in this type of prodution that requires travelling and filming on location does not come cheap. We've somehow managed to accomplish this challenge through a mixture of fund raising parties, a grant from the goverment, our own private money plus lots of payments in kind (friends and colleagues that have kindly helped with their time, skills and/or equipment during the filming process). At the editing stage we are in now, however, we have insufficient funds to carry on.
The story began in 2008, when we, the directors, Agatha and Alberto, embarked on a long journey that led us to India and Ceuta, following the story of a very special group of immigrants.
In the densely forested hills above Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast, 57 young Indian immigrants are awaiting their fate in a shanty community they built to avoid deportation. They had crossed half the planet to get to Europe and now they can see Gibraltar and the Spanish coast - just 8 miles away on the other side of the Strait - but they cannot reach them. They are stuck in the juridical limbo of Ceuta: and after 2 years in the city’s migrant detention center, and faced with a deportation, they decide to flee one night, and set up shanty camps in the nearby mountains.
Our film approaches the experience of the group through a very intimate portrait of five main protagonists. Babu, Mili, Rocky, Happy and Guri are very different characters, thrown together by circumstances and bound to each other for survival. We follow their daily life during their 2 years in the hills, their hopes and frustrations, as they confront the hardships of surviving in the forest and reckon with their fate.
The film highlights the evolution of their relationships and attitudes as they confront conflicts within the group, homesickness and uncertainty. The viewer shares in their anxiety as they await a solution, and joins them in the emotional conclusion. How do they survive? How do they evolve in the arduous struggle which unfolds in these long two years? What will they do to change their fate? The film will reflect the eternal and universal theme of human struggle in a desperate situation, while firmly situating itself in a specific human and geographic context.
As an original narrative resource we include the video-messages which the protagonists prepare for their families, and their families in India responding to these messages from the sons they have not seen in years. This stunning material provides a glimpse into the social realities, economic situations and cultural practices of the protagonists’ homes and helps the viewer both appreciate how much the young men have changed in their odyssey and share in their nostalgia.
The prestigious Indian magazine "Tehelka" wrote about this group of immigrants: “the little democracy of the damned that the boys have created on Ceuta, a community that’s part Lord of the Flies, part Robinson Crusoe, and part nightmarish reality TV show”.
WHY IS THIS DOCUMENTARY FILM SO SPECIAL?
With this film we provide the opportunity for viewers to enter into the intimacy of a group of immigrants who have been victims of their own dreams, and whose lives have been put on hold due to them. Moreover, we tell this story with a rhythm which turns the story into an entertaining film. Our intention is to overturn the standard television model, in which viewers follow reality shows which traffic in the sordid and the commercial. Here we present real survivors, bringing the viewer an unfamiliar story that will change his or her preconceived perspectives.
And there is more…
By supporting this film, you are helping an independent production and the heartbreaking story of survival, hopes and nostalgia. You will also help spread the message of the hardships of illegal immigration and alert the new generations of the dangers of the human traffickers. The film, intended to be shown on worldwide festivals and TV channels, will bring the new perspective on the topic to the global audience.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO USE THE FUNDS:
We have already finished the filming process and we basically need funding for:
-completing the editing
-image and sound postproduction
-prints and advertising
-creation of the film website
