The Juggernaut.Case™ was developed to bring the power of smartphones to the battlefield where they are used to enhance communication capabilities (i.e. sharing your location and knowing where your team mates are, marking locations, sending images and video...). These are many of the same features and activities that are enabled by Apps for sportsmen. We need your help in producing a Juggernaut.Case for the iPhone 5. With your help, we can bring military grade toughness to the iPhone user.
Juggernaut Defense specializes in the development of wearable electronics and technology systems for use by the military and first responders. Since 2000 we have been working as part of development teams for military groups including Special Operations units, Rangers and SEALs solving issues related to ergonomics, functionality and durability. The Juggernaut.Case™ has been evolved through three generations of extensive field testing and has proven to be an indispensable piece of equipment.

Ergonomic hands-free mounts truly distinguish the Juggernaut.Case™ from typical consumer cases. These mounts are designed to keep your phone where you need it, realizing that there are times when you don't have a spare hand. The Case can quickly be removed from all of the mounts for in-hand use. There are currently four wearable mounts to match your activity.
Chest Mount - this is the most common mounting position to-date. This mount provides a useful hands free position and is out of the way for most activities. This mount comes in two styles: MOLLE/PALS if you're using a compatible vest system or a Sternum Mount if your interfacing with backpack, hydration pack, or other shoulder straps.
Forearm Mount - this is the 'quarterback' style mount. Providing a great hands-free use option, this mount secures over a large size range using a BOA mechanism and can be worn over clothing.
Back-Pack Mount - this mount attaches easily to any backpack shoulder strap in a portrait (vertical) position. This mount is in development and we will share updates as we build prototypes during our Kickstarter project. Our backers may even influence the design.

Easy Open - the end sealed access door allows fast insertion and removal of your phone. No hassle with snap on or screw together cases where sealing can be compromised.

Glass Screen Protector - this is our secret to quality interaction, performance, and durability. 1.1mm thick, chemically hardened, anti-glare etched glass for daylight readability. This glass is super tough and responsive to capacitive touch control.
Buttons - all phone controls are accessed through sealed, nickel plated stainless steel button modules
Lenses - all phone cameras and LED flashes use optically clear sealed lenses so that the camera and flash work while inside the case
Data/Charge Port - the data/charge connection is accessed through a sealed door on the bottom of the case and secured by a captive thumbscrew
Juggernaut.Case™ Design History
Design and Engineering - We started developing the concept of ruggedizing smartphones in 2010 and designed our first case for the Motorola ATRIX that year. New designs followed for the Samsung Galaxy Note in 2011 using an end-door design which reduced the area of sealed opening to the absolute minimum. We also developed a modular button module that could be used as the common interface to home/volume/power controls. We found that these buttons provide better user feedback than soft elastomer buttons (especially while using gloves).
Each product generation has involved involved multiple generations of iterative prototypes and testing in realistic exercises. Key improvements included tuning the removal force of the case from the mounts and incorporating an infinite angle adjust hinge on the flip down mount. By listening carefully to user feedback we have been able to continuously improve functionality.
Prior to KickStarter Launch - we have finished our ProE CAD engineering database and verified fit and performance with SLA prototypes. Three iterations of prototypes were used to tweak the design and perfect the acoustics in the sealed enclosure. Glass samples have also been made to verify fit/function.
During the Kickstarter (30 Days) - we will complete the injection mold tooling design so that it is approved for release (when the project funds!). We will also be finalizing the soft good portions of the Mounts and building samples/patterns.
Nov 2013, Kickstarter Closes - launch the tooling build and release PO's for the other items on our Bill-of-Materials (glass, buttons, adhesives). Time to crank up the sewing machines for the Mounts!
Dec 2013 - finish tooling and inspect parts. Initial units will be tested for sealing (1 meter/30 minutes) to IP-67. Start production!

We have developed and evolved the Juggernaut.Case over three years and have proven our designs though field testing with Seals and Rangers. Our cases survive the mission where other commercial cases fail. We have completed the Industrial Design, mechanical engineering and initial prototypes. Now we're ready to finalize the design and start production tooling.
Juggernaut Defense has been involved in the development of many products and we have brought similar cases to market. We understand the product development process is never easy and can involve surprises but we believe that we know how to work through any issues that pop up. We have lined up tooling and production suppliers that we have worked with before and have high confidence in. Prototype glass samples have been approved and are ready for volume production.
Testing our early production samples to make sure that we meet our protection rating goals and promise will be a critical step. We plan to first test to IP-67 and 3m/6.6ft drop test. After that we will test to IP-68 (this test establishes how deep we can go!) and test what level of we can reach on the drop test. We are excited to share updates documenting our testing with our backers!
