750 pages of Sorcery 101
In this first volume, we follow along as Danny not only learns a basic fire spell, but also how he finds his footing in a supernatural-filled world. He has stopped aging due to a magic bond with a vampire and needs to learn how this affects his ongoing relationships, especially in regards to his 7-year-old daughter, not to mention any future dating prospects. Meanwhile, his werewolf best friend has started a family and Danny is helping with their super-powered child. Even his mundane day job as a history teacher is made difficult by the supernatural spilling over in the form of love spells gone wrong and teenage werewolves. All the while, the vampire he is magically bonded to is definitely up to something sinister.
It has been online since 2005, when long form fantasy comics weren't as numerous or profitable as they are now. It will wrap up in 2015, right after its 10th anniversary.
I'm Kel McDonald, and for the past 9 years I've been creating comics -- the most well known, both written and drawn by me, are Sorcery 101 and Misfits of Avalon (Dark Horse Comics), in addition to a large library of creator-owned comics. While doing all that, I've also organized two volumes of Cautionary Fables and Fairytales, a comics anthology series. My work can be found in print, and I have also successfully utilized the internet to publish my work. All my self-published work is in print because of Kickstarter.
Sorcery 101 and Kickstarter
Back in 2009, when Kickstarter was first getting started, I funded the first Sorcery 101 book. It was 120 pages long and contained the first 4 chapters. This book showed me there was an interest in my work and helped get my career going.
However, I had a problem when it was time to make book 2.
I started Sorcery 101 while I was still in high school. Consequently, I didn't know how to prepare files for printing books. So the first 460 pages were unusable. So I set to work redrawing ALL THOSE PAGES. All the while, I was making sure I had new pages going up online. Along the way, I ended up hiring Mary Cagle to color most of the redrawn chapters. 5 years, 600 pages, and 460 redone pages later, Sorcery 101 is finally ready to be printed in a big omnibus.
What's in this new book?
This new book is 750 pages. It is full color and will be 9" by 6". All of the art for the first 460 pages has been updated. So the comic pages look like this:

I have put a lot of work into this book so I'm excited to share it with the world.
Where is the money going?
The goal is $22000 dollars. That will get me 2000 books.
- $16000 is going to printing the book.
- $4000 is going to shipping the book.
- $2000 is going to kickstarter fees.
$24k - an exclusive pdf of the original version of Sorcery 101's first 460
- $26k - an exclusive pdf of the now offline Ask Danny side strips which answer reader questions.
- $30k - the Sorcery 101 book will be printed on nicer paper.
- $40k - ?????
- $50k - ?????
And whenever we get $1000 over goal I'll be giving Mary Cagle (colorist on the redos) a $100 bonus.
Risks and challenges
Everything is already done and I have experience printing books. However, this will be my first time getting color printing done overseas. So any delays will come from the printer in Hong Kong.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
