About this project
Be creative in 2016 following every month words of wisdom of the Mr Cup creative manifesto letterpress calendar. It is composed of 14 20x14 cm cards printed on 700g french paper. It is a hand numbered limited edition.
The Special edition comes a copperplate black cover, with a second blind printed design. It comes with copperplate foil edging !
The normal edition has a 2 colors cover printed on white paper. Each page will be printed in one color, and a second one depending on the success of this crowdfunding !
The front cover has been designed by Renaud Orange who already work on the past year edition. We wanted a modern art nouveau !
For this year edition, I ask graphic designer and typographer to create unique font work : Mark Van Leeuwn, Bryan Patrick Todd, Andy Luce, Scott Biersack, Tomasz Biernat, Eric Kass, Joseph Alessio, Salih Kucukaga & Rafael Araujo.
LETTERPRESS PRINTING & STUDIO PRESSION
The calendar is printed in France, at Studio Pression. Letterpress printing has the ability to create relief into paper by adding tons of pressure while printing. It’s called deep impression, or debossing. And it’s done at the same time, printing AND debossing, always one color at a time. The thicker the paper, the deeper the impression. For a crisper effect, we use much more harder magnesium plates instead of photopolymer.
9857 € ?
This is what it costs to print 500 copies, including 200 deluxe edition + paying the designers.
STORY & PAST EDITION
The Mr Cup Letterpress calendar is a project started in 2010, when I discover letterpress printing. I want to do a project and the calendar seems the best idea, as it is usufull and decorative at the same time. But I am not printer, I am graphic designer. The 2 first editions (2011 & 2012) where printed in Poland. I do not do one in 2013 as I move in Bali for a year and instead I set up a collection of wood letters with local craftmen ! The 2014 edition was done with spanish printer El calotipo, I went to Saragoza to met them.
The 2015 edition goes in a different direction : instead of designing the 12 months and front cover myself, I ask other designer to work with me. I also work with a french printer this time, Studio pression, a passionate man who went to letterpress printing... after he discover the first edition of my calendar !
For every issue I try to "play" with letterpress process : paper, colors, inks. For the the 2015 edition, we do a glow in the dark ink for the 100 copies.
2015 was also the year where I launch my own design magazine, www.waltermag.com, based on the content of my blog www.graphic-exchange.com. Started 9 years ago, the blog has now 2 millions visit a year, and the magazine was launch after a successfull crowdfunding back in april. Added of the calendar, I will propose to buy or subscribe to the magazine. The volume one of the magazine present an article about the making of the 2015 edition.

Risks and challenges
The main challenge this time is to reach to goal over a limited time period. Usually the past edition get sold in 3 months, from early november to the end of january. I hope the highlight of kickstarter will make to costs funding possible in a mont only.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
