My name is Joe Richardson, I'm an artist from Scotland. I'm here to ask you kind people for some money, with which I intend to make a video game.
In the past year I have made two very short test games, as a way of familiarizing myself with the necessary software. These will give you a good idea of the visual style this project will follow, and a rough impression of the gameplay. However, the story may or may not follow on from one of these games...
Unnecessary Sentience came 4th in the Newgrounds.com Construct 2030 Jam.
IndieGames.com referred to The Long Rain as
'...a freeware adventure that's definitely worth your time.'
So, how am I going to make an entire game, all on my own, in just under a year?
Firstly, I think it's important to say that I am not aiming to make a polished-looking, Xbox-ready masterpiece, with ground-breaking mechanics. I am a big fan of indie games in all their forms, and I think the quirks and eccentricities that come with working alone (or in a small team) are a big part of what makes them great.
Secondly, I got skillz 2 pay da billz, yo...
I am a fairly experienced animator, having worked on personal and professional projects for well over a decade now. For this project all animations will be designed in Flash. This will allow me to build characters quite quickly, then give me the freedom to add a variety of different character animations without too much additional effort.
You can see examples of my previous animation work at www.joemcrichardson.com.
I am currently studying for a BA in illustration. Although I like to draw and paint, most of my work is digital. For this project I will be employing a collage-based style, as seen in the test games. This is probably going to be one of the most time-consuming aspects of the project, but I think it is also one of the most important – if the world is not attractive it will not be enjoyable to explore.

I have the experience of many years making music alone in a Scottish bedroom (the same qualification as Calvin Harris!) and even had a few tracks released with Boy Scout Recordings. For this project I will be recording my own samples using instruments I have no idea how to play, then producing background tracks in Reason.

I started tinkered with some basic flash games back in the mid 2000's, but didn't aspire to make anything more serious until recently. Since this time last year I have been thinking about a mid-length project like this one, and have been experimenting with various different pieces of software (Adventure Game Studio, Visionaire Studio, Construct 2, Game Maker Studio) in order to get an idea of what I am capable of producing with my limited programming skills, and finding the best tool for the job.
WHAT'S THE MONEY FOR?
I'm currently making everything on an old laptop that constantly over-heats and switches itself off (twice so far uploading things to this page), using free versions and trials of most software. £1000, after fees, taxes and rewards, would get me a new computer, and licences to the necessary software to make this game. If I was able to get more money, that would be great. I could then get better hardware/software, and might even be able to buy a mobile device to test the game on. Also, I currently work (a proper job) part-time, so the more money I get, the more time I can free up to spend on the game.
£1 – Thanks! All backers will also receive regular updates on the progress of the game.
£5 – Digital copy of the finished game
£10 – Digital copies of the game and original soundtrack
£25 – The game, the soundtrack and a super cool screen printed original backer T-shirt!
£50 – The game, the soundtrack, the T-shirt and a signed and numbered copy of the (possibly hand-bound) development book!
Risks and challenges
The main challenge with this project will be getting everything done on time. I think I should manage it - the test games took around one month each, working part time and with completely unfamiliar software. Whereas I will be working on this project as much as I possibly can, and am now fairly comfortable using either Visionaire or Construct 2 - If, however, I am not entirely happy with the game I have produced by the deadline, I will simply keep working until I have something I am proud to give you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
