I am the owner and operator of Bad Baroness Buttons, a business working to make historically appropriate metal shank buttons available to reenactors and members of the SCA.
The Italian renaissance lady, Eleonora of Toledo, is well known to us. We have all seen the portrait of her with her son. But look more closely, and you will see that her buttons are really weird. They are large, gold tone (possibly ouches) with a sort of pointed tower in the middle.
Once seen, they cannot be unseen. They are everywhere, on Italian gowns of that period.
I work with factories in China to have buttons produced, but this particular one is rather more expensive than others, since it is really complex. The molding fee is $100-140, which is really inexpensive. But then we have to buy 3000 buttons at a rather high cost (once shipping from China is included). I have done all the preliminary work on this, and my contacts at the factories are reading to swing into action.
The factory made these 18mm buttons, so I am pretty confident they can make a beautiful button for us:
This Kickstarter is, in essence, a way for you to pre-order these 20-22mm buttons, to make it possible for me to start paying the factories for their work without bankrupting my business. I'm not asking for the full amount because I do have some capital and an investor ready to go. But I have a small business, and if the buttons aren't wanted, then I won't buy them. Your pledges will make it possible to gauge interest and make some additional capital available to pay the artists and artisans who will make these buttons for us.
Risks and challenges
One major risk is that the factory will not be able to mould the button we need. We will get as close as possible. Backers will get updates as the factory produces samples.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
