Folks are disappearing from the Shark's Cove youth hostel on the North Shore of O'ahu. When young and innocent Karen Palmer visits for a two week vacation, she meets a handsome and charming local boy named Charley. He promises to show her some sights "off the normal tourist path". Karen finds herself irresistibly drawn to her mysterious tour guide. When her two new friends, Mona and Lester, warn her that there is something fishy about Charley, Karen ignores their advice. She falls deeply under the spell of Charley's good looks and suave island charm. Unfortunately, Charley is the embodiment of an ancient Polynesian curse, and he's torn between his basic human nature and his predatory killer instincts. "Makua Charley" is a feeding frenzy of horror set amidst the gently swaying palm trees of idylic Hawaii. In this paradise turned to hell, the scent of fresh spilled blood is carried on a tropical breeze.
"Makua Charley" is a feature-length supernatural thriller film written and directed by Al & Jayne Cloutier. Currently in production, this independent movie is being filmed on location in Honolulu, Hawaii. Shooting began in spring 2012, with a projected release date of 2013.
What makes this film a little bit different from your typical low-budget creature feature is that it starts out as a romance. In the scene below, Karen arrives in Hawaii and checks into the North Shore Youth Hostel. She meets the handsome and charming desk clerk named Charley.
All that lead us to the idea of this KickStarter campaign. It’s not only an opportunity to make a really fantastic film but also to share some fabulous rewards with our supporters. Now, we know that $7,777 is only a teensy fraction of what most movies are made for. But, we're doing almost everything ourselves! From costuming and special FX makeup, to making our own props by hand, to filming and editing, and promotion, we're doing everything! The only thing we can't do is play all the parts. And that's why we need funding... so we can pay our actors. One huge plus we have working in our favor is that we live in Hawaii, the very best shooting location in the entire world! Our plan is; once the film is made, we will send it to film festivals and get it distributed. It will show in theatres, be available on DVD, and pay per view download. We know that we can do this, because we've done it before!
We're setting our funding goal low, so we can hopefully reach it, but if we can raise more, that will make for an even better film! More money equals blockbuster hit!
How Kickstarter works: People pledge an amount and choose a reward. At the end of our 40-day Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $7,777 goal, then the credit cards of those who pledge are charged and we receive the funds to finish our film. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided :( If we exceed our $7,777 goal then the extra funds will be used to make the movie even better - so keep pledging! All funds raised are used directly to pay the actors in our film.
Our Rewards: We're not looking for charity, we're looking for an alternate sales venue - that's why our rewards reflect fair market value. Don't think of it as a donation, think of it as a pre-purchase. If you want to see this film, buy it now through Kickstarter - you'll probably get a better deal from us than from whatever retailer ends up selling it in your country, and you'll help make our film better!
The Filmmakers: We're a couple of independent filmmakers who have been making movies together since 2008. We have day jobs where we make peanuts, but we shoot movies at night and on the weekends, and we love it. We do pretty much everything ourselves, from conception to financing to production to securing distribution. Click on a name to see our IMDB profiles.

PRODUCT PLACEMENT SUPPORT
We are fortunate to have a product placement supporter named Richard Moody. He is the inventor of a product named The Little Deeper Love Cushion. In the scene below from Makua Charley, we managed to sneak his product placement into the script. Watch carefully and you might be able to see it!
To those who might be thinking that this is an example of crass commercialism at it's best, we answer; Yup, it sure is. But, hey, we need some help with getting our film made! If you want to pony up a thousand bucks, we'll write you into the script too. We're not too proud. That's how Hollywood does it. As a truly independent film, we need to use all the tools in our arsenal to compete with the big boys. One way or another, we need to get this film made. And guess what? We're well on our way!
Read a couple of recent articles about our production in the horror blogs and magazines Here is one on :"Undead Back Brain" by Robert Hood, here is one on "Horror Bug", Drinkin' Drive-in , and here is one on "Horror-Movies.CA"! The buzz is building! Don't you want to be involved?
Please become a backer of Makua Charley? We need your pledge today. Time is running out!
If I pledge $1000 and receive the Product Placement reward, may I post the film clip featuring my product on my company website?
Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times YES! As soon as the clip is filmed We will render it for you as a mp4 suitable for embedding on any website. And of course, the scene will appear in the finished film which we fully expect will be seen by millions of people! Not only that, but we will also post the clip on our World Class Productions LLC Makua Charley webpage, on our YouTube, Vimeo, and our FaceBook pages (Jayne and I have over 6558 friends between us). Looking forward to your pledge!
Thank you very much for the excellent question! There are so many ways to get involved, we don't know where to begin! Besides helping us to spread the word, we can still use some crew members. Of course, this being an ultra low budget production (at this point), we need crew members who are based in Hawaii. Cameramen, soundmen, and any others who are willing to work for love are welcome to apply. Any post-production whizzes, the same also applies. Of course, if someone wants to come in as an executive producer and help this go from ultra low budget to something more, that would be terrific for anyone involved. You see this film has what many films lack; a great story! For us, the story is the main thing. Sure, we're following a bit of a formula known as the "horror genre", but this is a huge story which has tremendous promise. We've done our research on this ancient story and we've translated it into something modern and cool. We have no doubt whatsoever that with more funding behind us, this will be a blockbuster hit. And we're not just thinking about this one film, we're thinking about ancillary products too; like action toy figures, sequels, and more! Please let us know whatever capacity you would like to get involved? We really appreciate you!
Mahalo nui loa,
Al & Jayne
