We started this project at the beginning of 2011. At the time there was nothing on the market that could enable a phone to be used as a helmet cam, yet we could see some real benefits to this idea - particularly the ability to edit and share your footage without the need for any other equipment.
Since then, a few products have come out that allow iPhones to be mounted on top of helmets, but they all require the phone to be facing the direction of filming.
To us, a phone sticking up on top of a helmet just doesn't look right. It seems vulnerable, clumsy, and aesthetically wrong. We knew from the start that this idea needed lateral thinking to become the product we wanted. And here it is:
How it works.
At the core of the S.1 is a precision molded optical system that allows a large field of view to be compressed and rotated through 90 degrees before entering the iPhone's lens.
Your phone has to be perfectly aligned with the optical system to function properly - this happens the moment you put your phone into the S.1.
Close the outer case, and your phone is shielded from dirt, water and impact by an ultra tough polycarbonate shell. The soft silicone inner fits snugly around your phone, giving incredible resistance to impact and shock.
The image captured by the S.1's optical system is back to front due to the 90 degree rotation. This mirroring disrupts the phone's image stabilization software. Our free app corrects these issues, and makes the product easy and intuitive to operate.
Using the S.1
Using the S.1 means your phone is protected from damage, and can be clicked onto your helmet if there's something you want to film. You can keep it in a pocket when it's not being used, and the footage can be upload on the way home. Point of view photography on-the-fly.
Getting your phone in and out of the S.1 is quick and easy. The silicone liner grips tightly, but is soft enough to easily push your phone out the instant you want to.
The case is kept tightly shut using two snap over cam buckles. This ensures that the case remains closed if one of the buckles gets damaged.
We decided against a soft front on the outer case, as we wanted maximum protection for the phone inside. This does mean that the case needs to be opened to take a call or send an email, but we feel the advantages to having a fully protective outer shell outweigh the minor disadvantages.
Recording can be started and stopped via the touch screen, or by remote control for a more dynamic user experience. We trialed a range of different remote controls, and found one that worked particularly well, so we will be supplying this remote as an accessory for the S.1. However, recording can be controlled by any paired bluetooth device that adjusts the volume button.
For people using the S.1 without the remote control we've added a couple of useful options:
- A countdown timer - allowing for closing the case and attaching to a helmet before recording starts.
- Limited recording times of 1, 2 and 3 minutes.

It also works amazingly well for hand held filming.
Footage is automatically shared to your phone's image library for editing and sharing. You can also share raw footage immediately after recording to Facebook, Mail, Messenger, your iCloud account, or other Apple devices using AirDrop.
What's next?
The Soft Head Mount is for people who want to shoot head cam footage, but don't want to wear a helmet. We're working on a highly supportive, ultra light design for fluid, non-restricted movement.
Compatibility with GoPro fittings increases the versatility even further, with an almost infinite range of mounting possibilities, and the ability to use the S.1 with our Flymount Original.
When will this be ready for iPhone 6? The groundwork has already been done to make this a swift upgrade if the demand is there. We hope to hit the ground running with the S.1, and if this happens, we should be ready to manufacture the iPhone 6 version within 4 months of completing this campaign. The S.1 is virtually complete. We've done the groundwork, and with your assistance we can enter into full production within 4 to 6 weeks of completing this campaign.
As with any new product, there will always be a few bumps to smooth out before orders are fulfilled, but we're confident that enough time has been allocated to do this.
We've already produced a small production batch of the S.1 to test assembly methods prior to large scale production. These are the samples shown in the video and throughout the campaign.
