Addressing Toronto’s Lack of Rentable Kitchens
When we first started Manning Canning, we were surprised at how difficult it was to rent kitchen time.
In a city with a food scene like ours, why is availability so limited? There are a number of reasons, but first and foremost these facilities are really expensive. A regulation hood for a standard professional kitchen can easily cost $30,000, for example. This makes it out of reach for most new food businesses. And when you can get time in existing kitchens, it is usually in 'off-peak' hours. So we’re creating a commercial kitchen that offers well-equipped, purpose-built kitchen and storage spaces to food producers who need it. The facility will also allow Manning Canning to grow!
The space will have two separate kitchens. One will be general purpose with a ten-burner stove, convection oven, deep fryer, salamander, industrial dish washer, ice maker and small wares. It will be available 24/7 with plenty of prep space.
The second kitchen will be for Manning Canning; with a tilt skillet and two steam kettles, available for rent when not in use by Manning Canning. Perfect for sauces and soups.
We will also offer both cold, dry and frozen storage for rental on a monthly basis.
Location, Location, Location!
This is where it gets exciting…we’ve already got the space! We believe in this project so when the ideal location came up, we had to grab it. We’re leasing space on Vanderhoof Avenue in Leaside. It ticked a lot of boxes for us, including being centrally located, accessible, as well as having ample parking space and a loading dock. No more lugging supplies up and down stairs. The Manning Canning crew is pretty excited about that!
How Will Your Donation be Used? How will my donation be used? The money we raise will be used for the purchase and installation of the required equipment. The more money we raise, the better equipped the facility will be!
When is This Going to Happen?
We’ll be in the space by October and construction starts from there. Rentals will be available on a limited basis from mid-October and we’re confident we will be fully operational by December 2014.
The Best Kickstarter Perk Ever
That’s right, for a donation of $8000 or more (we're hoping for $10,000 as the video shows), you’ll get Christine’s prize possession, a red 1966 MG Midget convertible! How’s that for commitment? Bombing around town in this stylish barouche, you’re bound to turn some heads and have fun doing it, all for a great cause. (contact us for full specs and details)
Risks and challenges
We are fully confident that this project will be successfully completed, so much so that we secured the space ahead of our fundraising efforts. That said, we’re realists, and we’re aware of the challenges and risks.
Permits and Construction
Getting the right permits and planning permission can be the downfall of any new business project. Our advantage is that the leased space currently holds the required permits, so we know that the infrastructure is sound and should meet requirements.
For new equipment and construction we are already working with city inspectors, the landlord and contractors who have given us great input to ensure we get this built to code in the shortest possible time.
Equipping the Space
Toronto has a wide range of small food producers, from caterers to bakers, all of whom require access to specific (and costly!) equipment. We want a space that works for as many people as possible, so the more money we raise, the more solid the space. That said, our funding goal was calculated to ensure that we can provide the necessary equipment for our users.
We - and most of the dozens of industry veterans and experts we spoke with – are convinced that Toronto needs a commercial kitchen. But what if demand for rental is limited? We don’t think this is a risk.
There are hundreds of caterers, dozens of food trucks and countless aspiring food-producers in the city. Using our own network, as well as social media, content marketing and online advertising campaigns, we are confident we can get the word out and meet our revenue targets in short order.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
