Spielbound is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to educate, entertain, and create community through board games. Our intention through this Kickstarter campaign is to raise funds to help make our board game café into a physical reality and to grow our community.
We believe games inspire, motivate, entertain, and help us grow. In this positive space, we seek to provide all people the challenge, art, and fun unique to the world of board games.
In order to fulfill our mission, we are creating a board game café - a welcoming and unique setting that will house over one thousand board games, offer delicious food and beverages, serve as the central location for all of our game-related service events, and provide a comfortable space for people to play fun and social board games. We have many exciting projects planned, including:
- providing games and lesson plans for teachers to use inside and outside the classroom
- supporting research that attempts to understand how playing board games prevents and slows the progression of Alzheimer's Disease
- highlighting board game art and design through displays and lectures
- providing resources for budding game designers to develop their ideas into full-fledged games
We want to celebrate the unique way playing board games bonds us, no matter our background, and creates lasting new memories through play.
If we reach our funding goal, we will sign a previously agreed-upon lease for 3329 Harney Street in Omaha, Nebraska. The building is immediately south of Midtown Crossing, a vibrant and large retail and residential center just 3 blocks west of I-480. Ample parking is available.
We have a great contractor ready to begin construction on our three spacious rooms: the café, library, and party room.
The café will serve traditional coffee house items: locally roasted coffee, lattés, cappuccinos, gourmet hot chocolates, bottled soda, tea, and an array of sweet and salty snacks. Choice beer will be available on tap. The café will open early for the morning rush.
At over 1000 games and counting, the library will house the largest playable collection of board games in the United States. This is where you will go to check out the game you want to play, whether it's a traditional family game like Monopoly, a new classic like Ticket to Ride, or a strategy game like Agricola. Playing a game requires either a membership or a $5 one-day pass. In addition, this room will feature two large demo tables where daily game tutorials will be held.
Our 1500 square foot party room will function as an overflow gaming room on busy nights. It will also host charity game tournaments and can be rented out for parties or corporate team-building events. With appropriate funding, the party room will also contain two private game rooms that can be reserved in advance.
Spielbound has a membership system that makes it easy to come in and play as much as you like. You can become a member at any time and we offer monthly and yearly memberships.
Benefits of membership include:
- unlimited access to the game library
- two one-day passes per month ($10 value) to share with your friends, family, or someone who might be interested in Spielbound
- invitations to member-only events and sales
- the ability to reserve tables
A family membership covers two adults and their children (<18 years old) living under the same roof.
Kickstarter may be new to many who would like to support Spielbound. On the right side of the screen is the list of reward levels. Contribute the amount listed or more to claim your reward. Payment is confirmed through Amazon. Only IF we reach our funding goal will you be charged and receive your award.
If you would like multiple rewards, just add the amount of the additional pledge level you want and let us know your rewards of choice. We will accommodate most reasonable requests. We do require that wall of honor listings and logos be respectful. While we hope that many backers will pick up their rewards in person at our location, we will provide free shipping of all physical rewards within the US. Outside the US, shipping will need to be estimated on an individual basis. Details on the rewards are below along with stretch goals that we hope to achieve if we raise more than our minimum funding level.
You can also always send us a message or comment and we will try to respond right away. Also, if you want to help us, be sure to spread the word by sending this to all of your friends, family, and coworkers!
All backers will be listed on our website for all reward levels.
Risks and challenges
We did not launch this Kickstarter lightly or without great forethought. We are ready to start construction upon completion of this campaign. Even with this preparation, the biggest risks involved are the potential for additional unexpected delays with permits and construction. We think the location is great, but as an older building, it has presented some challenges. Fortunately we have learned much and are prepared for the challenges ahead.
In addition, while we applied for federal 501c3 non-profit status a year ago, the IRS has still not reviewed our application. All backers should assume that no part of their contributions are tax-deductible until notified otherwise. We understand that this may keep some from helping, and we hope that most will support our project independent of this status.
We feel confident in our business plan and our talented board and officers and are in a good position to support our community for many years to come. We also have received advice and in-kind support from numerous members of our community including: SecretPenguin's design of our logo and brand, Jared Staab's creation of our video, Bethany Haubert & Carl Laegreid's interior designs, Peter Lundrigan's website help, Mike James' architect drawings, Matt Johnson and Cara Heacock's photoshop help, and over 30 volunteers who have helped us get this far. We could not and can not do this without your help - thank you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
