About

About

We’re a sound project. Before you read any more about us have a quick listen to a brief preview from the pilot episode. This clip of Joey Landreth really exemplifies the depth and candidness of the storytelling on The VinylCast.

I LOVE unique, live, acoustic music performances! But… I hate the low-fi quality of Youtube videos, TV or other online clips. The VinylCast is my solution to creating exactly the content I crave, but rarely find, recorded in the highest possible quality, produced, mastered and pressed to VINYL!

The defining moment in my own personal musical history, and likely many others was the Nirvana, MTV Unplugged show, and accompanying album. The raw honesty and emotion delivered when breaking their songs down to the acoustic level was one of the great musical performances of all time.

It set me off on 25 years of seeking out unique, live performances wherever I could find them. I’ve also always wished MTV Unplugged had a conversation / interview element to it. Why did he play that song? Why did she change the melody there on that cover? What was she thinking when she wrote that lyric?

25 years later, I’ve brought together a talented team, that together we can create that show. It’s MTV Unplugged meets Behind The Music, all recorded at the highest quality and pressed to vinyl. Welcome to The VinylCast Club.

The VinylCast Club

We are building a unique record subscription show and service that takes you deep inside the heads, hearts and souls of the next big bands. Other vinyl subscription clubs will pick out and send you existing records. Here at The VinylCast we create 100% original content.

Season 1

Season 1 will feature 12 episodes with killer bands, jamming live, acoustic versions of their songs, and sitting down for a candid conversation, telling the stories behind their songs. Imagine the unique, raw performances of MTV Unplugged, crossed with the intimate story telling of Behind The Music.

Using the industry connections of our team, we’ve been able to connect with and schedule recordings with some awesome artists and bands we can’t wait to tell you about.

The Songs

The best songs ever written, can still sound incredible even with all production stripped away. Unplug the guitars, get the band together in a semi-circle and let the raw, honest passion and emotions soar through gorgeous vocals, harmonies and acoustic instruments, and that is what The VinylCast is all about.

We aim to set the stage, quite literally, and create a comfortable, gorgeous and incredible sounding acoustic space to perform and record in. We’ve used century old fire-halls, cathedrals and music school recording studios for the first episodes. We even mic up the room as the space itself becomes an instrument in the performance.

For each episode the band selects two of their songs to feature. So far the bands have loved the opportunity to focus on their favourite songs, the B-sides and more rare tunes that don’t often get media attention. We ask them to come in with an acoustic setup for the recording, stripping the song down to its acoustic core.

The pilot episode and first couple of test recordings we have done, have blown our expectations to the moon and back with unique and stunning, honest, emotion filled performances you can’t find elsewhere.

The Show

Imagine getting to just hang out and chill with some of the most talented artists and bands on earth. Imagine kicking it on the couch, guitars and acoustic instruments in hand, and just chatting about the stories, events, people, personalities, dramas, relationships, feelings and emotions going through their heads and hearts as they wrote their songs.

Imagine them just picking up their acoustic axe, maybe pulling up a piano, bringing their buddies over and jamming those songs live and in person.

Now come back to reality for a second. That’s probably never going to happen.

The VinylCast takes you there as we sit down, one-on-one in a candid, honest and vulnerable conversation about what makes them and their songs tick.

Each show starts with a look back into the history and making of the band and their sound. Along the way it dives deep into the emotions and feelings of the artists and band members on how their own experience shaped their sound. The first few episodes have already delved into addiction, recovery, family struggles, personal demons and the triumphs that came out of them.

We then take a deep dive into the two songs they perform. What inspired them, what was that initial spark, how did that grow into the full fledged song we know and love? Who inspired that guitar solo in the 2nd verse?

We’ve been producing podcasts and audio production for 5 plus years, and have produced over 150 episodes for a variety of clients. The VinylCast is the culmination of everything we’ve learned and love about audio shows. More than 200 hours went into producing the first pilot episode.

Why does it take so long? Well first off, we believe in creating the best show possible… all killer, no filler and that means a lot of research, a lot of editing, producing and mastering to create a product that we’d want to listen to ourselves. .

What Kinds of bands will you have on?

While part of the fun is the surprise factor each month of discovering a new band, what we can tell you is that: We aim to have a mix of Bands you’ve probably heard of - CBC, NPR level bands, as well as some emerging stars that we think have the talent to go far. We’ll always have incredible singer/songwriter artists and bands that are writing innovative, unique and awesome tunes.

Our Pilot episode features The Bros. Landreth, a band just about to release their second album who have been receiving high praise from industry legends.

The Rewards

Pilot Episode

We’ve produced a special limited edition pilot episode just for you, our Kickstarter supporters helping us get The VinylCast off the ground. Experience the gorgeous sound of our high end recording and pressing direct to VINYL. Get a glimpse of our candid in-depth interviews as we go deep into the heads, hearts and souls of The Bros. Landreth.

Each 12” 150 gram record contains the two fully mastered for Vinyl acoustic song performances, as well as the full interview show with the band.

The Bros. Landreth

Bonnie Raitt once called The Bros. Landreth her favourite band! For an unbelievably tight and soul filled rock band from Winnipeg, that was all the recognition they needed. For The Bros. Landreth,, music is in their very DNA. It was part of their upbringing from day one.

“We grew up going to shows because our Dad was a touring musician and our Mom went along. I don’t know if it was they didn’t like to leave us with babysitters or they didn’t have enough dough to leave us with babysitters but out parent’s have lots of stories about taking Dave to the bar when he was like a little baby, putting him in the baby thingy and under a table.” - Joey Landreth

All four members of The Brothers Landreth grew up surrounded by music made by their own families. It should really be no surprise that the spark that kicked their career into high gear was that reuniting of family, with brothers Dave and Joey getting back together, getting back to that original state where the two of them first listened to Dad’s music, then played together with him, and no until the better part of two decades did they reunited.

The result? Well you can be the judge for yourself, but if Bonnie Raitt knows a thing or two, let’s just say The Bros. Landreth are giving the music world something to talk about.

Sneak Peak

Here’s a little peak as well. We’ll also have episodes featuring The Royal Foundry, Shred Kelly and more for Season 1. Now shhh. no more prying, that’s all we’re letting out for now. We record it all in super high end, lossless audio, professionally produce and master it before pressing it to Vinyl.

The Royal Foundry recording with The VinylCast

Shred Kelly after their recording session.

 Our recording setup:

Audio Engineer Drey Bombardier leads the live recording charge with a literal treasure trove of mics. Here’s a small list of some of our live recording setup for the tech heads out there. Everything is run through Manley tub preamps and Focusrite converters:

2 - Lauten Atlantis Joesephson E22S

2- Lauten LA120 (X2)

Variety of Sennheiser/Shure dynamic mics

We master the songs specifically for Vinyl, and then press it all to 150 gram Vinyl, and ship it directly to your door each month.

Pressing Vinyl

We’ll be pressing just 1,000 numbered copies of the pilot episode to 150 gram Vinyl for our founding supporters like you.

After extensive research, we will be working with two pressing companies. One in Canada and one in The USA. We have spent exhaustive hours researching our pressing options and believe we have found the best combination of highest quality pressings, and quick turnaround times. Each record will be pressed on near brand spanking new presses, some of the first new presses built in the last 30 years.

When will I get my record?

We’ll have everything (album covers, episode production, audio mastering, logistics setup etc.) ready to rock so that as soon as our Kickstarter campaign successfully closes, we will immediately start the Vinyl presses. From that point, it will take 11 weeks total to press the vinyl and get it to your door. That will put your first pilot episode in your hands by early September.

Making the full Season 1 Happen

To make season 1 happen, we need help from music lovers and collectors like you. We’ll be producing 12 episodes in total. Thus far we have the pilot episode completed, and have booked episodes with the first 6 artists.

We’ve recorded and produced an exclusive, limited edition pilot episode with up and coming stars The Bros. Landreth. Bonnie Raitt herself called The Bros, Landreth her favourite band. These Winnipeg Rockers lay down a tight, fresh southern soul sound, and get deep into the heavy emotions and experiences that inspired them to write and play.

We’ll be pressing just 1,000 numbered copies of the pilot episode to 150 gram Vinyl for our founding supporters like you for our $22 supporters. That covers our pressing and production costs for the pilot episode and leaves us just enough left to cover our hard costs to produce the rest of Season 1.

With your support we’ll be able to complete the full 12 episode Season 1 series of The VinylCast.

VINYL MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER

Imagine if you stripped 95% of the data out of a carrot. I can still tell it’s a carrot, sure, but I just don’t see enjoying it as much as a beautiful fresh carrot.

Imagine if you stripped 95% of the data out of a song. It still sounds like the original song but most of the enjoyment is gone.

Don’t take it from me. It’s science Yo. When our brains hear a great song (or have sex, or take drugs) the most ancient parts of our brain are stimulated and secrete Dopamine, making us feel great.

Experiments have shown however, that while our ears still hear good music when you strip 95% of the data out of it by going from analog or live music or records, to digital - MP3 and Streaming those ancient parts of our brain are no longer stimulated and we get far less dopamine.

What that means is that listening to live music, recorded to vinyl literally makes you feel better! You being a vinyl fan though, already knew that, whether you knew it or not. It’s a big part of what makes people love records.

AUTHENTIC, GENUINE EXPERIENCE

In a world that is increasingly digital everything, online everywhere and all the time, there is something comforting, and satisfying about holding a physical object in your hands. Pick up that package delivered to your door, discover what’s inside, physically lift that needle into the groove and let your senses fill with an authentic, lossless, analog sound. That’s why we record and press the artists live acoustic performances to 150-gram vinyl records.

The VinylCast delivers the next best sound quality to being their in the room with them as they play unique versions of their songs that you can’t find anywhere else ….that is unless you do get to hang out with them one day.

RELATE TO ARTISTS ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Here’s a crazy thought. What if your favorite rock stars were actually just regular people at heart with the same desires and challenges as us mere mortals?

Did you know that singer worries about paying the mortgage on his first house? Did you know that duo stole a canoe and paddled on a backcountry getaway when they were inspired to write their hit? Did you know this songwriter, tests all of his new songs playing them for his dog in the car before releasing them?

What we DON’T DO is your typical pop media interview. We chat friend to friend, musician to musician, just like you would if you could sit down with them.

KNOW WHAT’S COOL BEFORE IT'S COOL

Oh the glory of being the friend, or coworker who knows about the next big thing before everyone else. Ahhh basking in the glow of admiration when passing on an interesting factoid just as a particular song comes on the radio is a beautiful thing.

We don’t want to create a bunch of know-it-all but damn it, if it isn’t fun to have that one-up knowledge to make us seem like real musical insiders.

One of our goals is to introduce “The next big thing,” bands as well as getting behind the headlines with big name acts to help you know what’s cool, before it’s cool.

THANK YOU!

This project could never have ever got off the ground if it wasn’t for those first publicists, band managers, labels and of course the bands themselves for giving us a chance and saying yes to participating in The VinylCast.

Special shout-out to Mavis Harris of Universal Music for setting us up with our first band appearance.

Massive thanks to The Bros. Landreth for coming out to play and recording the pilot episode with us. They crushed their performance with an incredible vocal display, and tight acoustic guitar solos.

Behind everything that I do, is my wonderfully supportive wife Kelly. She encourages me to pursue what at the time seem to be wild ideas, and supports me in their transition from idea to reality.

Thank you to my two young kids for letting Daddy sleep in after a night out with the band recording episodes, and rocking out.

A huge thank you to my partners on this project our audio engineer Drey Bombardier, and our web guru Zeb Hansell. Thanks for believing in this project from the idea stage. It has been your talents that have helped bring it to reality.

Of course more than anything else, without an audience there really is no reason to create a show, so a MASSIVE THANK YOU to you our valued listener! You are why we do what we do.

Welcome to The VinylCast, where every song has a story.

Risks and challenges

The most difficult part in being a new project, even though we have an experienced team, is convincing artists, bands and labels that we are legit. This has been a huge learning curve over the last year. We've since put in the time and effort to build critical connections in the industry and we have scheduled the first 6 bands/artists to record episodes with when we hit go. With our pilot episode now in hand, we are confident, we can book the remaining 6 bands using our same approach and existing contacts to complete Season 1 .

Once we have the bands/artists recorded, our existing team of Drey Bombardier - Audio Engineer, Zeb Hansel - Web Guru and myself Andrew Zwicker - Executive Producer/Host have the talent to turn our recordings and interviews into a highly produced show.

Getting Vinyl pressed in a timely fashion can be a big concern. We have done our research and settled on Precision Record pressing who we believe bring the combination of high quality pressing, and short turnaround times. We can have our vinyl in your hands 10 weeks after the Kickstarter campaign closes.
