About this project
HELP BRING ALYSS HOME!
Last year, when it seemed like Hatter’s search for Alyss was all but lost, I turned to the Kickstarter community to help complete the 4th book in the Hatter M series-- Zen of Wonder. The support we received was not only overwhelming and heartwarming, but it convinced me that Kickstarter was the right platform to drive The Looking Glass Wars engine forward. Thanks to you, I was able to make the graphic novel without any compromises and give the book directly to you, the reader, exactly as it was intended.
TWO BOOKS IN ONE KICKSTARTER
And now I need your help again-- to raise $29,000 in 29 days. Join me in the effort to publish the first novel in my exciting new prequel series featuring a teenage Hatter Madigan -- THE LOOKING GLASS WARS: MILLINERY ACADEMY. As well as the 5th and final book in the Hatter M graphic novel series, LOVE OF WONDER.
THE LOOKING GLASS WARS: MILLINERY ACADEMY
Swordplay! Newfound friendships! School bullies! Budding love! Self-serving rivals! Scheming adults and soulless rebel plotters! Welcome to the world of Cadet Hatter Madigan, who has just entered Wonderland’s Millinery Academy as one of the freshmen ‘Brims’. Those born to be Royal Bodyguards are trained at one of the four academies (Heart, Clubs, Diamond, or Spade) linked to the royal houses. Cadets will study the mystic and martial arts, as well as the sometimes more difficult art of successfully dealing with others.
As readers of my Looking Glass Wars novels already know, Hatter will grow up to one day serve as bodyguard to two queens and become Wonderland’s most famous traveler. But in the MILLINERY ACADEMY—each installment of which chronicles a single year of our hero’s education— I want readers to live through the experiences that shaped this extraordinary Wonderlander. They will share young Hatter’s joy as he forges new friendships at the Millinery, and suffer his frustrations as he strives to maintain these friendships. Witness young Hatter struggle with the first stirrings of love. Watch him defend himself against rival cadets. See him contend with the expectations of teachers all too familiar with his infamous older brother … and all while he tries to keep up with his studies.
HATTER M: LOVE OF WONDER, vol. 5
In the 5th and final volume, looking glasses shatter as our worlds collide and characters from Wonderland increasingly cross over to aid or block Hatter in his single-minded quest to find Alyss and bring her home. Redd's Black Imagination has ruled Wonderland for 13 years without fear of reprisal and now the specter of Alyss' return to claim the throne has unleashed a storm of paranoiac rage. Hatter Madigan is at the center of this crusade as he must simultaneously battle the enemies of wonder as well as his own beliefs and loyalties. All paths through time and space, through blood and steel, from his world to our world, have led Hatter Madigan to this moment -- a life or death confrontation with the only warrior in the Looking Glass Wars universe capable of defeating him and destroying the love of wonder.
The world - Frank Beddor spent three years pondering the details of Alyss’ world before he wrote one word of his New York Times best-selling trilogy, The Looking Glass Wars. He has expanded upon his prose with the Eisner-nominated Hatter M series. A Hollywood film producer, his credits include There’s Something About Mary and the upcoming Sony sci-fi film The Juliet.
The word - As an astral traveler and interstellar author Liz Cavalier's lifelong passion of tracking the myth of a prepotent otherworldly warrior who appeared in France in 1859 to crisscross the planet for 13 years dovetailed perfectly with Beddor's discovery regarding the truth of Wonderland. Upon reading The Looking Glass Wars, Cavalier contacted Beddor and strongly suggested they meet and share knowledge. When they finally put all of their pieces together they discovered the labyrinthine odyssey that became the Hatter M series.
The art - Finnish artist Sami Makkonen has been with us since vol. 2 of Hatter M. Sami has also illustrated the graphic novels Blue (2008), Deadworld Slaughterhouse (2009), and RYSE: Sword of Damocles (2013) among others. Sami is a first place recipient of the 2007 Sarjis award for best fantasy comic (writer and illustrator).
We feel it would be helpful to break down exactly where the money we're asking for is going. As with vol. 4, Zen of Wonder, we need $20,000 to do the first print run of vol. 5. We love the high-quality color, well-bound graphic novels we've been creating, and want Love of Wonder to be just as beautiful.
The remaining $9,000 of our goal is needed for the next Looking Glass Wars novel-- I will hire an editor, layout designer, and print the novel.
Remember that Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing system. If we can't raise the full amount in the time given, these books cannot become a reality!
But if this campaign does go over it's funding goal, we already have tons of ideas for stretch goals and additional rewards for all backers. So please spread the word!
Risks and challenges
Our last Kickstarter campaign for Zen of Wonder went extremely smoothly-- we met our delivery date, and all backers who responded to their survey got the rewards they donated for-- and more! We already have experience dealing with the risks and challenges of the delivery period, and are confident that any new obstacles we come across can be overcome.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
