The forces of Dark Imagination are gathering. They threaten our future. But there is a way to stop them. Followers of the Glow and fans of the Hatter M graphic novel series must band together. Your continued support and interest in Hatter's search has truly empowered me as writer.
I want to return the favor and empower you as a fan, allowing you more control over the material you get from me. And how and when you get it. That's why I've decided to place you in greater charge of the next part of this saga. And the people at Kickstarter have given me just the tool to do that.
This book does not exist without you. It has been awhile since Volume 3 was released, and the time has come for me to ask for help. I wish to collaborate with you. Become co-publishers. HATTER M: ZEN OF WONDER
In Vol. 4, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan’s search takes an unexpected detour when he travels ‘within’ guided by a mischievous and often maddening young girl named Nekko. Nekko’s origin is a Zen mystery, but her devotion to Hatter’s quest to find the lost Princess is unwavering. After Nekko kidnaps his Hat and leads him on a fearless chase across the rooftops of 1871 San Francisco, Hatter must acknowledge her as a teacher. It is written that when you are ready the teacher will appear, but if the teacher is a 12-year-old girl and you are a High Ranking Bladesman you may discover that all you can do is laugh.
Hatter and Nekko’s adventure around the ring of fire begins when they track a stolen samurai sword with a Wonderland connection to San Francisco’s styling 19th century hiphop crime madam Missy Tong and her eager protégé, the outspoken Lil’ Dick. A stowaway trip aboard a shanghai sailing ship ends on the Hawaiian Islands where a surfboard becomes Hatter’s vehicle to illumination. And then on to Japan! Good grief it’s Chikao and the gang, schoolhouse demons, cosplay, manga, noodles and a long lost brother from another world. Duality? No. Milliners.

THE ORIGIN OF WONDER
My name is Frank Beddor. I created the Looking Glass Wars over ten years ago. It has given birth to three prose novels and three (with your help four) graphic novels. But almost as exciting as the stories themselves is how I came to tell them ...
It began at the tail end of the 20th Century in London. I was wandering through the British Museum when I happened into an exhibit of antique playing cards. It was quite an impressive show, with cards of every type and description, from a deck created specifically for Napoleon Bonaparte to one advertising a long defunct brand of ale. Most were gorgeous, many important. But these didn't captivate me.
What caught my attention was an incomplete deck at the end of the exhibit. It was modest in design and execution. But I couldn't stop looking at them. There was something familiar about them. But I couldn't put my finger on it. Then it became clear.
These cards all featured characters from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. But they were strange and different. Not the characters Carroll created. Somehow darker, truer.
For the remainder of my trip, I was preoccupied with these images. I told friends. Through one I connected with a dealer who specialized in antique cards. After hearing my story, this man retrieved an old, worn leather box from his storeroom. He opened the box, revealing all the missing cards. He flipped over one card at a time. And as he did this, he told a story. The saga of the Looking Glass Wars.
When I returned to Los Angeles, I began putting all the pieces together. I realized the story contained in these cards was the true story of Wonderland, hidden for nearly 150 years. And then I began writing the Looking Glass Wars trilogy.
Hatter M is the parallel graphic companion series to the Looking Glass Wars. As I was researching the cards it became clear to me that Lewis Carroll took it upon himself to change everything Alyss had told him about Wonderland, including the identity of Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan. In fact, Hatter Madigan was an expert bladesman, a ranking High Cut of the Wonderland Millinery and not the tea-guzzling madman of Lewis Carroll lit. In LGW Book 1, Hatter M was introduced but his story was only explored for about 4 chapters. There was so much more to tell about his mad search for Alyss that I realized he needed his own series – and graphic novels would give this action adventure its appropriate form.
Additionally, Hatter M as a graphic novel seemed like a necessary, organic progression from all of the work I was doing at the time with concept artists on the Looking Glass Wars. So, with the help of visual innovators Ben Templesmith and later Sami Makkonen, I began to unveil Hatter’s quest.
Like a violent birth, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan explodes from his world through a puddle on the Champs Elysées in the year 1859, shockingly separated from the future Queen of Wonderland he had been entrusted to protect. Pursued by the police, taunted by nationalistic Frenchmen and challenged by an evil black magician, Hatter must evade the authorities while simultaneously searching for lost princess Alyss!
Hatter M returns after a dangerous visit to Wonderland convinced Alyss remains lost somewhere in our world. Determined to find the lost princess, Hatter moves forward with his plan to track the Glow of Imagination, but quickly discovers he is not alone in his mad search...

I have worked with Liz Cavalier and Sami Makkonen on previous graphic novels, and our creative team is 100% dedicated to completing this series.
