I am a lover of good coffee, good conversations and hosting intimate gatherings.
My husband Dalen and I are transplants to New York who have settled in Upper Manhattan – Harlem. What has been impressed upon our hearts is finding a way to take our gifts and use them to love the people that are right outside our door. How do we give back and not just consume? This is how the dream of Common Good Harlem started.
A little over a year ago, I quit my full-time job to spend more time with my son Jai and start planning and training for a small cafe/event space. Through my research from my previous career as an event planner, it was clear that this type of space was not easy to find in Upper Manhattan. After an exhaustive search and couple failed attempts to lock in a spot, the perfect location found us, right around the corner from our home!
We are bringing a cafe/event space Uptown. A space to serve specialty coffee that is not at the higher price point of national chains. A space to host small gatherings of celebration, learning and community building.
We have partnered with La Colombe Coffee Roasters, featuring a unique draft latte on tap. We will also serve non-coffee drinks like our freshly made watermelon lemonade. Finally, we'll be baking some of our own pastries on site and serving a few brunch items.
The space can host up to 40 seated and 60 standing. We envision hosting birthdays, showers, workshops, classes and events that we could partner with other local small businesses and organizations in the community.
Who We Are
Karina Paz Oshiro
My life's journey has given me an eclectic style that flourishes in my life and work. Growing up in a large Latin family, I was surrounded by food and celebration. Hospitality is something that comes natural to me.
I have over 14 years of experience in event coordinating. I grew up in Texas and worked in the hospitality industry where my love of people began. I moved to California where I became an event manager at a cafe/event space (Aracely Cafe), evolving my passion to organize and plan small gatherings.
I spent the last 4 years at one of New York City's top Event Design and Production companies (Ovando NY) where I produced both social and corporate events. Thus, my passion and knowledge of flowers and event decor has expanded and I have built relationships with amazing vendors here in New York.
I have been working in the graphic design industry for over 20 years. From Hawaii to San Francisco to New York, my experience has been vast. Im currently the Associate Creative Director at Rauxa, an ad agency here in New York City. We produce online, print and broadcast marketing content for food & beverage, entertainment, financial and tech brands.
I am a Hawaii boy who loves the bustle of the city. That duality of organic ease and structured chaos is evident in my life and work. I like to say i have "an island nature with urban style."
I'll be overseeing all of Common Good's social and marketing content.
We Need Your Help
We are looking to raise $15k to help us cover the cost of the coffee equipment. This includes espresso machine, coffee machine, grinders and refrigerated tap system for draft lattes and cold brew coffee. Any extra funds will go to cover construction costs.
Risks and challenges
“The only thing worse than starting something and failing is not starting something.” – Seth Godin, author, entrepreneur, public speaker.
With any new business there are challenges and risks. Permits, approvals, inspections and construction delays. We've got an experienced construction team who have worked on several cafes and bars in Harlem, Hamilton Heights and the Bronx. They, along with an architect, are helping us navigate the process and buildout of the space under our creative direction. We also have a seasoned chef and restaurant owner consulting on our menu and day-to-day operations.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
