About this project
I See Peace is the first in the unCommon fruit series by Maya Gonzalez and published by Reflection Press.
Background and the Birth of I See Peace:
I have made a lot of books. It’s my job. But never one like this.
.........I combined my love of simple storytelling,
.....playful ink drawing
........to share a very personal journey.
This book landed in my head a year ago, half-formed, but full of breath. And then it just sat there, quietly, not moving. As the project hibernated, I learned more. I learned how our personal experience contributes to the whole, how one person’s actions can change everything for everyone in one way or another. I learned just how connected we are. I could feel it and I could see it. We affect each other in very real ways.
While I See Peace hibernated, many things happened: the revolution in the Arab world, the Occupy movement in the US, the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan and more. I could feel the world changing and needing to change. I wanted to support my world in the big and the small ways because I could feel the connection between all of us. I could feel my desire for peace for each individual on the planet experiencing all the things they were experiencing. Was that kind of peace possible? And was there anything I could do about it?
I knew I could never understand everyone’s intimate experience, but I could understand the basics in my own way.
I knew what it felt like to struggle with issues of power and justice, to face the unknown, to be faced with seemingly unbearable circumstances in which I could either suffer long term or find peace. And much to my surprise, I knew what it felt like to find peace. Although peace was not what I thought it was, it was peace.
I realized that until recently I had never experienced peace for myself and in fact until recently, I still harbored wild misconceptions and idealistic/unrealistic world peace fantasies. I realized that for me, peace needed to become something real and personal and possible before I could talk about and work for it effectively. Now, I see world peace as possible. But in a different way than I had imagined. Beyond rallies and marching and outside peace (which are also fabulous!)…I see
..............A PEACE movement—
..........................beginning within each of us,
..........growing from the inside out,
..................affecting our actions and thoughts,
......................................changing our world.
I want WORLD PEACE. I will see what I can learn about that by creating peace in my own small world. I will acquaint myself with the reality of peace. Can I do it? Is it possible for me? Is it possible for you? Find out. Begin here, now. It matters.
We’ve got nothing to lose and only peace to gain! Any peace is worth it! Our intentions and effect may appear quite small. That’s ok, it will ripple.
This winter, I See Peace woke up from its long nap and jumped up into my mind, alive and ready to get out into the world, a very different world than a year ago. Peace, freedom, equality.
Focusing on the very big idea of peace, this small book is compact enough to carry with you wherever you go. Part story book and part guided journal, I See Peace uncovers a very real and personal experience of peace and how to create it.
84 total pages 5"x8" paperback with simple story text and pen and ink gray scale drawings
Although the video art is not the final book imagery it speaks to the design intent of the final work
16 pages journal, 59 pages illustrated story
Guided journal in the back supports exploring your self and life related to the story, peace and how to create peace for yourself
The story is a simple read, created to potentially be read on multiple levels and provide the opportunity for deeper and deeper reads over time and experience with peace. The style of language and imagery also provide a resting point and moment of reflection in our life.
What the funds are for:
The words are written, the design is laid out and the pencil sketches are finished. I have a complete, handmade mock-up I can hold in my hand. It’s almost there!
Our Kickstarter campaign will support the last leg of this journey to get I See Peace published in book form. Funds will be used to buy final art and design materials, pay for set up fees to publish our first small run and cover outreach.
As a small independent publisher, part of our commitment to publishing consciousness expanding books, is being aware and respectful of our Earth. We use print on demand to print our books so that we only ever print the number we need. All wood product components used in the books from our US based printer are also sustainably forested. We believe this is the next wave in publishing as we begin to listen to and respect our home and our responsibility here.
I See Peace is a great little book. I’m super excited about it and I’d love your support! But...
Even if you can't pledge:
Join the movement that begins within. Freely decorate your world with peace.

I noticed you have a $1000 reward but your goal is only $500, what will you do if you raise more funds than your goal?
Depending on how much we raise over our goal, some of the ideas we have for what to do with the additional funds are...having it available in Spanish, being able to give away free books at political events, develop curriculum around peace to share with kids, print more books (of course!), and 8 million other ideas we're dreaming up even as we type this...
