“Sketching Process” is a self-published design sketching book created and distributed by SKEEHAN studio.
Thank you to everyone for getting onboard early to support the project. We have been overwhelmed by the support and are excited to bring Sketching Process to print. We still have 20 days left on the campaign and we're now ready to share with you our stretch goals.
We made our 13K goal
The initial 13K will be dedicated to printing & distribution costs for the first edition. If we can achieve our stretch goals however, we can fully realize the project. I'm most excited about our 50K goal - the building of an online platform for Sketching Process. We'll have expanded video tutorials based around content from the book, as well as personal interviews and demonstrations from leading Australian designers that have contributed to the publication.
Thank you again for your support. This book has been a passion project that my studio has been developing for the past 2 years. I'm so proud of what our team has created and the overwhelming support we've recieved from the global design community. We cannot wait to see this come to life.
The 200 page publication intends to inspire and teach designers how to further their hand drawing skills, from basic design drawing principles through to advanced techniques. The book will focus on leading Australian designers and their sketching processes, including furniture, lighting, product design, fashion, automotive, styling, architecture and typography.
I've been fortunate enough to have many amazing contributors to the book, including mentors that taught me how to sketch, through to other creatives that have a passion for design sketching and use it as an integral part of their professional life.
Adam Goodrum, Ross Gardam, Jon Goulder, Tom Fereday, Bill Shelley, Alexander Lotersztain, Takt, Sam Tomkins, Erin Hinton, Dale Hardiman, Andrew Simpson, Nick Robinson, Dan Armstrong, René Linssen, Phil Rose, Charles Wilson, Emma O’rourke, Corr Blimey, Marc Veenendaal, Christopher Boots, Johnathan Cresswell, Ben Claase, Georgina Whigham, Enoki, Nik Rubenis, Gavin Harris, Design By Them, Coco Reynolds, Kevin Snell, Tamara Kyd, Georgina Whigham, Charles Wilson, Harry lees, Alex Fitzpatrick.
For the past two years I've been working on this publication and we're now at the point where we can share the book and reach out to you for support in the final stages. We're looking to raise enough capital to cover the first print run. I'm asking for your feedback and support to get us there.
Built like a textbook, in the beginning we focus on the fundamentals, 'how to draw' and the equipment designers use. We then develop onto more advanced techniques and rendering styles. The final sections of the book are devoted to designer profiles. Each designer feature shows a glimpse into their style of drawing and exemplifies how they've used design sketching in their professional practice.
Sometime after your copy is delivered in January, the book will show up (at a higher price) in bookstores and online. You can help make the minimum by buying copies of the book now at the discounted Kickstarter price, and these could be distributed to friends, colleagues, or used as teaching aids.
The book is in it's final stages of development as we collect the final content and continue building the story. We have already received sample prints to test paper stock and colours, but we're asking for your help to push the book into being. With your support we can bring this project to life and share it with the world.
Risks and challenges
The book currently exists as a digital draft. The biggest challenge for Sketching Process is the final development of the printed book and shipping it out to you. We are currently curating the story and formatting all the content. Im very confident in the team I have around me and believe we can get it finished in January.
To tackle this, for the past 3 months I have been working closely with my printers to insure the next stage of the project runs smoothly. I have received sample prints of the paper stock and colour formatting, as well as costings on all logistics involved to ship our book in Jan 2017.
SKEEHAN studio has never published a book before. However, our studio designs, manufactures and ships products all around the world. Supply-chain managment is core buisness for our team and I have a practised logistics model for our own products. I'm confident we can apply this to the delivery of our books.
I have my full professional confidence in my studio's ability to produce and ship this book. I'm committed to being transparent and honest throughout the final stages of Sketching Process. I personally guarantee that if you support this book, we will get it to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
