Did you ever regret not doing something?
There comes a time when everyone has something they regret not doing. Putting an idea on hold for something else, or just simply saying no.. We decided that if we keep saying no to this dream we've had since we were dating, that we would never actually get around to doing it. So this is us saying yes, we want to do it, now. And we want to include everyone else in it so they may too have a piece of our experience.
What is it we want to do?
We both love backpacking. Anyone that talks to us or asks what we like to do in our free time, will know that we love to be outdoors. In case you don’t know us well, we have been backpacking together since we were dating. We even decided to take our honeymoon in the Rockies as a weeklong backpacking trip!
So we want to take our experiences on the trail to the next level. A hikers dream is to hike something called the Appalachian Trail. It is the first long distance scenic trail in the United States. It is over 2,180 miles long, stretches over 14 states, and is traveled by foot from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine. We want to seize this very moment in our lives and take that next step.
Along the way we plan on journaling and documenting the entire trip. After the trip we will turn our two journals into one book, so you can read about our experience from both of our own perspectives!
The AT (Appalachian Trail) is something that you can only do in a transitional phase of your life. We are at a point when we are still young, and can travel easily. We are ready to move on and take our careers in new directions, and would love to move to another state to start fresh. This means leaving our jobs, stepping out of normal society, and hike into a new direction for the next 4-5 months of our lives. Sounds crazy huh?
The AT changes people. You learn who you are, what life means to you, what true friendship is, and discover a piece of yourself that you never knew. Its not a vacation, its a life-altering backpacking experience.
What do you plan on doing with the money?
We don’t only want to hike the trail, but write down our experiences along the way. We plan on taking these journals and publishing a book about our journey on the AT. Something that makes it different than any other book out there, is ours comes from two different viewpoints. One man, one woman. One husband, one wife. One that is a logical reasoner, one that is a free spirit. It’s not your average book, it’s a peek into our inner thoughts and feelings as we experience over 2,000 miles of hiking in the wilderness. You will be able to read an entry of what one of us was going through personally, and then see what the other was thinking that very same day!
We plan on creating this book after the trail. We have saved up money so that hiking the trail can be a reality. But this money donated will help us complete any loose ends, finalize any expenses, and finish the cost of publishing a the book when we are done with the AT.
Why exactly a book?
People often want to read to get as much knowledge as possible before hand of what to expect when thru-hiking the AT. Most of those books are from middle-aged white men that have not hiked much or have little experience. This book as mentioned before will be different than the norm. It will be one about a couple instead of a single person. Hiking in a pair changes everything, This book consists of not only a man and woman but a intimate couple. Also rather than a narrative type of book it will in the format of a journal, so we will not have to try to remember what happened back on the trail. Rather you will read the exact journal entry of what happened that exact day for us! No book exists out there for those to read like this!
Do I get anything if I help donate?
YES! We want you to enjoy bits and pieces of the trail with us! We have many gifts that you can get according to how much you donate. It includes things small such as an email update when we are half way, to a signed copy of the book before its released with your name in the special credits.
-Don’t forget that in order to receive any of the funds donated, we must reach our goal of $1,500!
-Any donations after the goal, will continue to help produce our book!!
-Help us make our dream, a reality, and allow you to be a part of our journey!
Risks and challenges
The trail has so many obstacles besides the obvious ones such as mountains, trees, and sheer wilderness. Every single item you need to take with you has to fit into one backpack...and be carried on your back. Every corner comes with the risk of giardia, a dangerous virus in water that can turn the strongest stomachs into sudden illness. There are bugs, bears, coyotes, snakes, mice, and every other creature that lurks in the woods. There's the fear of getting lost in one of those 14 states. Its not a plain walk in the woods..
Creating a book can also be a daunting task! But we both enjoy writing, and sharing it with other people. We have a large support group of friends that can help. Cortney's father has even written a book about a life changing experience in the wilderness out west! We have people lined up to help publish our book so that we will not be alone on this journey.
But its all worth it to push to the end, and share our stories in this book so everyone else can read about 'From My Side of the Trail'.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
