About this project
CITY GRIT is a culinary salon, a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host. Founded by Sarah Simmons, CITY GRIT offers food-culture events anchored by dinners that feature a pre-actualized tasting menu around a particular theme or ingredient.
Referred to by The New York Times as the Off Broadway version of the James Beard House, CITY GRIT has “quickly become a magnet for out-of-town talent,” bringing in chefs from all over the country to our kitchen in New York to create memorable dining events that are open to the public.
We’ve been told by guests that our current space is so warm and inviting that they don’t want to leave. And that thrills our hearts, but there are some aspects to the current dining experience that come along with operating out of shared space in a 200 year old building that we'd like to change.
We want to continue to bring chefs to NYC, giving them the opportunity to cook in a state-of-the-art kitchen. And we want our guests to enjoy their food in a beautiful space with the same charm of our current location, but with the amenities of a state-of-the-art restaurant.
Given the constraints of our current space, we are consciously aware as to what needs to change. We want our guests to be able to access restrooms that aren’t shared, to enjoy their meal in a lively environment that is buffered by outstanding acoustics, and to enjoy the benefits of central air-condition.
We’ve found a perfect location that will help us achieve our goals to offer you a better dining experience and have spent the last year meeting with investors to raise the money we need to build out a new space. We’re using our money and our investment dollars wisely to make the space the best it can be. So we're looking to the kickstarter community to help us raise funds towards the deposit for the new location.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing venture. If we don’t hit our goal of raising $100,000 in 30 DAYS (yes, days), we won’t be able to sign the lease and put down the deposit on our new home. We can’t let that happen! So spread the word- tell your friends, relatives, co-workers, dog-walkers, anyone… Let’s do this y’all!
Risks and challenges
Every project has challenges; luckily we’ve built a strong team that is ready to hit them head on (with hardhats on, of course). We’ve got expert contractors, brainy engineers, successful restaurant architects, devoted project managers and most importantly, all of you, to keep us going. A CITY GRIT Membership means you get to come to dinner at CITY GRIT every Thursday night for the length of your membership. You can keep all of the dinners for yourself OR you can get a group of friends together and all go in on the membership (and then fight over who gets to go to which dinner).
The opening party is going to be a truly eventful night. We've already begun planning it! Music, food, drinks... you name it!
The night will not only showcase our new space, but will also feature food from some of our favorite celebrity chefs. There may even be a few special guest appearances...

We thought you'd never ask! Our Opening Party is tentatively scheduled for May 7th, 2014 and we can't wait.
It's going to be the party to end all parties featuring food from over 20 of our favorite chefs.
