Into Sunlight is an evening-length dance choreographed by Robin Becker, inspired by the book They Marched Into Sunlight, by Pulitzer Prize winning author and Washington Post Senior Editor, David Maraniss. The dance premiered at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Hofstra University, New York, where it inspired interdisciplinary conferences that explored themes of cultural embodiment, the impact of war and violence, and the integrative power of art. Into Sunlight, is not only the centerpiece for this exciting interdisciplinary symposium that has addressed issues of war and peace focusing on the effect of war and violence on the social body, but is a means to help further inspire vital dialogue about war while creating a path for healing the wounds of war.
When Into Sunlight was premiered at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in March 2011, and then at Hofstra University in April 2011, Pulitzer Prize winning author and friend of the company, David Maraniss was the Keynote Speaker for the symposium. He spoke alongside experts from various disciplines including Political Science, History, Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology to discuss the effects of war and violence on all aspects of our culture, including the effect on the physical body itself. The dance provides a unifying process of reconciliation for those who experience the trauma of battle and for a culture engaged in its own inner battle. The goal of the symposium and dance is to bring together diverse perspectives engaging both a public and university audience in active dialogue on the subject of embodiment as well as addressing current cultural conditions of war through a historical lens. The further goal is to open up consideration of how war and violence shape our experience, transforming us physically, mentally and emotionally. Into Sunlight was performed at Georgetown University this past January with an audience talk-back session, alongside the dancers, Robin Becker and David Maraniss. Set against the backdrop of Washington D.C., Into Sunlight was met with an overwhelming response and standing ovations.
Into Sunlight choreographer Robin Becker recalls her inspiration: "When I read David Maraniss's powerful book on the Vietnam War, I immediately responded to the timelessness and universality of the themes and events he documented. I was deeply moved by the integrity, honor, and commitment of both those who fought the war, and those who fought against it. I embarked upon the creation of this dance, Into Sunlight, hoping that the universal language of the body would reflect and offer the same sense of healing that David's words evoked in me."
Your pledge and support will ensure the momentum of Into Sunlight. Your help will allow us to pay dancer salaries, rent rehearsal space, and provide the administrative support necessary to bring this work to more venues. The company will be performing Into Sunlight at Stony Brook University and Holy Trinity Diocesan High School this upcoming March 2012. It is our hope that this pledge will help in making these performances a part of this continuing journey and vision.
