About this project

This April, I will be hitting the road to scour the gutters and pillars of our society, in my good ol' Ford Coach House van. I'm asking you to join me on this trip to help unveil the people and the places our country does not shine with the limelight. Help me show you the truth of BAFreedom in the USA...
I will be taking this road trip, and shooting photographs (and video) until I'm good and done. My friend, Ian Beaudoux, will also be documenting in a series of short videos. I plan to develop as much film as I can on the road to keep you and myself up-to-date. Upon my return I will be hand-printing all of my favorite photographs to be shown in a gallery/art show (venue to be announced) which you are all invited to attend. Along with the show I will be making a big, fancy coffee table book showcasing all of my work from the journey (will be available for purchase)...
I have been saving up my own money to fund my van, gas, food, shower, and some of my photography supplies. However, in order to fully have enough money for photography supplies, the book and show when I return...I will need your help!
Here is what I will need:
- Being an avid / stubborn film photographer, I need help in funding this!
Typically one roll of 35mm film will run $4-$10.
Processing one roll of film will run $5-$15.
- Printing these photos! I also believe in making and physically touching things with my own two hands. This is why I am going to print most of my photos (hopefully all of them) in the black&white and color darkroom.
Lab rental can be anywhere from $10-$30 per hour.
Paper (the bigger the more expensive) can be from $25-$200...and I'm thinking big people.
- Creating a book! I will be making a (hopefully very large scale) print book of my entire 6 month adventure. I want this to be the nicest, and most professional book I have ever made (and keep the costs down as much as possible). I plan on only making a very limited edition run of these books until I can get the public and financial support I need.
My vision for this is a hard cover, high quality color printed book with 50-100 pages. I want to make it look as professional as possible, yet still keep my own creative style (i.e. handwritten notes and drawings, unconventional layout and photo pairings, etc.)
To self-publish one of these books I am estimating a cost of $65-$80 per book (the bigger the run being printed the less the cost of each book will be)...
I am a big believer in the "You only live once," "Life is short," philosophies and have decided I just can't wait any longer in making one of my dreams a reality.
No, I am not the first person to drive around the US in a van.
No, I am not the first photographer to take photographs while on a long term road trip.
But one thing I know for sure is that I have the passion, curiosity, drive, energy, courage, and discipline to make an amazing body of work like you have never seen before...
"Camerado, I give you my hand! I give you my love more precious than money, I give you myself before preaching or law; Will you give me yourself? will you come travel with me? Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?" -Walt Whitman

Risks and challenges
Film (this applies to the polaroids as well) - Can be damaged by heat, water, sun exposure, careless hands, etc.. God forbid this will happen to rolls that I have already shot with, but it has happened to me before and will most likely happen again.
Photography Equipment - Lost, broken or stolen. Lets face it, it happens. Some of my equipment will need to be ordered online if I have to replace it. This will set back the timing (and budget) of my trip while waiting for the products to ship.
Humanly troubles - This means I could run out of money, my van could blow up, and I could come down with some weird 1 in million case of some disease and have to cut the trip short.
CREATIVITY (probably the most important risk to consider) - Although I am extremely confident in this project and what I can achieve with it creatively... I cannot promise I will blow all of your minds with my work that I create from this project (this also means you won't get your money back if I send you a polaroid that you don't like...sorry). There is just not way I can make everyone happy (although I would like to).
Upon my return, I will be dealing with a plethora of people, equipment, companies, creatives, budgets, etc. to make my book and art show happen successfully. This will be very challenging, but I know that the passion, drive, and amazing support from all you folks will help to complete this amazing journey that lies ahead! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
