About this project
There is a time and place where one's perception is changed, and a realization sweeps over what they thought they knew. For me, I had the belief that my pizza was average. Hundreds and hundreds of pizzas that I made, were just good, but not the kind that make you close your eyes and say, "WOW, this pizza is life changing (or something along those lines). It took a long time, but finally one day, i knew that the pizza i made, was better than many of the pizzeria's in my surrounding area. This confidence sparked the seed for Pizzeria MOTO.
Fast forward a couple of years....I saved up enough money for our first trailer, and dove in head first to our endeavor. There were many challenges that we faced, but we're now approaching our 3rd season. We're now at a point of growth that we are running into some challenges. Our business is small, but we are eager to obtain more work and do more gigs. A couple things that are stagnating this growth are a larger, more efficient oven & a trailer that houses the oven that is larger to store things and takes less time to setup.
To do what we do, our current oven has it's challenges in retaining heat for long periods of time consistently and cooking a large amount of pizza. It has a 40" hearth and we are looking to upgrade this oven to a 48" hearth. More importantly, the new oven that we are looking to purchase has a thicker floor too, which, will make our pizza more consistent, and allow us to cook more things and expand our product offerings to our customers.
The second thing we're looking to do with the funding is purchase an enclosed trailer to house the oven in. The trailer will enable us to do many different things in addition to our food prep, but will make setting up much easier and allow us to do more events throughout the day.
Any additional funds that we receive will be used for marketing, advertising, website maintenance, and operating capital.
Risks and challenges
We started Pizzeria MOTO with MANY challenges facing us. I was just laid off from my job and I had the will and drive to not let that happen again. The economy was not the best economy it had been in previous years (an understatement for 2008) and there were many risks that we took to make it a success. For the first year and a half of business, I maintained a full time job in addition to working full time building Pizzeria MOTO. In addition to that, our daughter was born around the same time, creating both a huge blessing, but also a major lifestyle change while starting a business.
We've got a fairly good following so far and we have doubled our business from our first season to our second season. We expect with the addition of the second oven, we should be able to double our business again creating more stability to the business and the people that work for us. Taking this next step will also give key employees the opportunity to grow and take on more responsibility, and Pizzeria MOTO will also be able to strengthen our local economy more by hiring additional people.
The biggest risk and challenge that we're trying to overcome with the 2nd unit is about making a unit that can operate more efficiently, operate in a variety of weather conditions (wind, cold, rain, etc), and be able to put more pizza's out better than ever before. We are mitigating many of the risks associated with this type of business, by creating a unit that is enclosed and has the capability of turning out more pizza's with a larger oven.
