Madam Clara Presents The MidCenturian illustrated Tarot Deck
Supporting this project funds the publication of a unique tarot deck illustrated in the abstract forms of mid-century graphic design.
The MidCenturian illustrated tarot deck is a new undertaking I have begun as a personal project. I wanted to create a tarot deck true to the imagery and archetypal symbolism in the Rider-Waite deck, but abstracted and stylized with the optimism and whimsy of mid-century design.
I have always been inspired by great artists like Mary Blair and others in her class who have brought incredible graphic style and design to new heights in the 50s and 60s.
All of my illustrations are derived from a close study of the Rider-Waite, distilling each and every symbol to simple forms with a child-like freedom. Many of the hand-drawn and handcut shapes were then tediously digitized and repeated throughout the deck for continuity.
Card titles are very important in this deck, offering a very quick read, even in the low-light of a moody reading. Bold, graphic numbers and text occupy nearly a third of each card, but are incorporated within each and every design.
Color harmonies refer back to the Rider-Waite, but with a mid-century design sensibility: bright, bold, sometimes unexpected, entirely modern.
I hope you enjoy the deck!
Risks and challenges
Great news for my supporters! The entire MidCenturian Deck is complete -- all 78 illustrations in the minor and major arcana. I have only left the two "extra" cards to be completed, which I will finish during the kickstarter campaign. Once this deck is funded, I will be ready to go and get it printed to fulfill orders quickly! I still need to design the deck box and would love your opinions -- hard side box? Printed tuck box? Owners of the Madam Clara Sees All deck know that I have included a matching velvet pouch with every order.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
