About

How it started

Aspect was created by the team behind Mr. Green Beans, a retail business that equips home coffee roasters and coffee enthusiasts. As a business that caters to coffee enthusiasts we came into contact with a lot of small roasters who had dreams of bigger things. A common theme in conversations with our customers was the high cost of starting a roasting business. A chance encounter with the owner of an older Probat coffee roaster planted the seed for an idea that eventually became Aspect. After purchasing and refurbishing the roaster we were able to create a collaborative roasting space that provides affordable access to the equipment needed to run a profitable coffee roasting business.  Since roasting operations began in 2013 our space has been used to roast a lot of coffee, start some amazing journeys and make a few dreams come true.

What we do

We stand for community, for makers, for entrepreneurs, for dreamers. That is why we created Aspect, to support those looking to create.

Aspect is a collaborative roasting space; we do not roast coffee. We provide the space, equipment and encouragement for others to create their own coffee roasting companies. The space is designed to be an incubator, a tool that allows others to achieve their dreams. Keeping with that goal, we keep the costs of using the space as realistic as possible to allow access to a wide range of users. This approach is working! Home roasters with aspirations of starting their own coffee companies have done it. Café owners who wanted to improve their profitability by roasting their own coffee have succeeded. Producers from coffee growing areas looking to reach new markets have created new long term partners and gained valuable insight into the US coffee market.

What we need

Aspect needs to move! The current space is too expensive and too small to be viable in the long term. Moving into a larger space will allow for growth while still keeping the costs at a minimum. In turn, it will allow Aspect to be a greater resource for the current members as well as the Portland coffee industry in general.

Why we need Kickstarter

We see kickstarter as a way to engage the community in helping us support the individuals and businesses who use our space.  Portland has always been supportive of small and independent businesses.  This is something we are proud of and we are excited to be a part of this vibrant community. From the beginning, we have operated Aspect as a resource for those looking to create something, be it starting their own business or raising money for a cause they believe in.  We keep the cost of using the equipment and accessing the space as low as possible. This approach has its benefits, but it limits our ability to absorb large expenses.  While the material costs of maintaining and running the space have been kept affordable, the cost of rent in Portland has increased dramatically.  Leasing a new, larger building and completing a buildout will be expensive.  The money received from a successful kickstarter will offset these expenses and limit the costs that would have to be passed on to the users of the space.

Who we are

Aspect was started by Ginny and Trevin, the team behind Mr. Green Beans, but it quickly grew into a family of coffee roasters and enthusiasts. From the best donuts in Portland to school fund raisers to fighting sex trafficking in India, Amazing things are happening at Aspect! Click on the logos below to learn more about the companies who are currently using our space and the awesome things they are doing.

Simply put, we’re coffee people. As veterans of Portland’s artisan food and beverage industry, we share a lifelong passion for the craft of coffee and the way it connects people and cultures. In 2017 we decided to found a company that embodied  what we value most: collaboration, environmental stewardship, and investment in our community.

Coco Donuts is a donut and espresso café in Portland, OR featuring small batch donuts and in-house roasted coffee. The café is the only donut shop in Portland pairing high quality, classic donuts with in-house roasted coffee.

In 2013, Coco Donuts took on a long anticipated venture of roasting its own coffee. We spend time cultivating relationships with coffee farmers and co-ops to offer the best coffee beans in the word to our customers. The coffee is roasted each week at a local co-op, which allows us to continually offer freshly roasted coffee rotated throughout the week to our customers.

Since then Double Jump Coffee has been growing by leaps and bounds into an award winning and thriving business over the last three years. Partly because of the help of Trevin Miller and the welcoming and affordable facilities of Aspect. Aspect has provided a space that enabled Double Jump to take our skills and product to a much higher level.

Drink Good Coffee

Sparrows coffee was founded in 2018.  We started it to provide a name for the coffee we roast at our brick and mortar store called Kahveology, soon to be Sparrows Coffee and Tea. We roast small batches each week to provide the freshest coffee to our customers.

Our adventure began in 1996.

We spent the summer riding bicycles across the United States, and after finishing, decided to settle in Oregon. We fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, Portland and more than anything else, coffee culture. Since then, we have both lived and breathed cafe life expecting that the product, environment, and customer service are the best they can be. When we opened the Red e Café in 2009, nestled in a North Portland bustling brick building, we were excited to raise these standards.

When you drink our coffee what you hold in your hand is the culmination of our love of coffee and cafe culture.

The adventure continues.

Risks and challenges

As an existing business our risks and challenges differ slightly from a startup because we have an existing customer base.

For us one of our biggest risks is our own success, if we do our job properly many of the businesses who use our space will move on to owning their own roasters. Part of the reason for moving and ultimately the kickstarter is to get into a larger facility that allows us to cater to new and more customers.

Time is always a challenge, there never seems to be enough. We know that some of our rewards will be demanding on our time, but we feel we are up to the challenge. Plus, we love what we do and sharing it others is part of what we love about our jobs.

Competition is actually good for business as it forces you to be innovative and creative in how you operate. Aspect is not the only collaborative roasting space in Portland, we are however the best.

    Name Our Roaster

The very first member of the Aspect Coffee Collective was a pretty blue 1996 Probat L12 coffee roaster. She is a workhorse and still assists every roaster who joins us in making his/her dream a reality, but she doesn’t have a name! That hardly seems fair for such a trusted friend. With this reward, you can be the one who finally gives her the name she deserves (please be respectful). Her new name will be engraved on a plaque and fastened in a place of honor to the front of the roaster. (This is one of the most photographed coffee roasters in the country!) She will from that point on be known by the name you have given her.

    Ultimate coffee Experience

The ultimate coffee experience for the true coffee lover and adventurer. This multi-step reward is for those who really want to learn everything about coffee. We'll work our way backwards through the process. Starting at a coffee shop we'll teach you how to pull shots of espresso and brew cafe quality coffee. After the cafe experience we'll spend a day at the roasting space learning how the coffee served at the cafe was roasted. We'll teach you the cupping process and how coffees are chosen including how coffees are sourced. For the final step, you will join us on a sourcing trip, to origin to visit one of the producers we work with, likely in Central America. It's a process, but at the end you will truly understand coffee, where it comes from and the people who produce it. Plus it's going to be a lot of fun!
