"What began as a project inspired by a series of Youtube response videos, Jenny Drumgoole’s “Make & Do (Happy Trash Day!!)” series quickly shifted toward a social critique of power, social structure, and audience. This project hinges on the artist’s interest in the City of Philadelphia’s department of sanitation and its trash workers’ rights. Drumgoole held weekly celebrations of “trash day” and created an aesthetic world built around her main character, Soxx. The resulting installation is an in-progress work that breaches the art world, existing in a real-time context."
“Happy Trash Day” began in June of 2013 as a surprise thank you for the sanitation workers on my block in Philadelphia. Since then, I having been having more elaborate Happy Trash Day celebrations for the sanitation workers of Philadelphia in many different neighborhoods throughout the City.
Here’s what happens. I pick a location and find out what day the trash collectors come. That morning I arrive and setup balloons, banners, signs, and refreshments and wait for the trash collectors to come to their surprise party. (links with more info/press below)
The sanitation workers have been without a raise or a contract for more than five years. Happy Trash Day, in all of it’s spectacle and fun, is also a means of drawing attention to this.
Next month marks the one year anniversary of the first Happy Trash Day, so I would like to create a month long blitz of Happy Trash Days in various locations throughout the city. Each event will have a different “theme” and I will make a video from each event.
The funding will allow me to organize a blitz of eight really special Happy Trash Days over a 1-month span in different locations in Philadelphia. I need the funds to cover the production costs that are associated with each event. Refreshments, decorations, party favors, documentation, signage, glitter, beans, floats, etc.!
The final event in this one-month blitz will be where I walk my life-sized paper mache trash collector from my home in East Kensington to Philadelphia’s City Hall where I will present it to the mayor on the day that trash is collected at City Hall.
Each Happy Trash Day will be documented and will be used in my “Make & Do, Happy Trash Day” project. Until now, I have paid for everything on my own. I have had some really great people help in the past with time, documentation and things like food, but I need your help to make this REALLY GOOD…the trash collectors deserve a super amazing Happy Trash Day month!
