UPRISING

Uprising takes place in a world where necromancy - using magic to temporarily bring the dead back to life - is common, but feared. The skill is surrounded by heavy regulation and mistrust. Many necromancers find themselves at a disadvantage in society because of this ability that they were born with.

Riley and Cassie are two of the many necromancers who live in the sleepy town of Andover. Riley keeps her head down and rejects the idea that necromancers are treated as anything less than full citizens. Her girlfriend Cassie is passionate and reckless with her belief that not everything is as it appears. Of course, none of this is made easier with their roommate and best friend Nick being an officer in with the local police.

Everything comes to a head when Seth Freeman - a necromancer accused of the crime of reanimating human corpses - is shot while resisting arrest. Cassie's determination to find the truth leads both herself and Riley down a dangerous path.

WHY UPRISING

Uprising is director Jennifer Zemke’s honors thesis film. This film is the creative accompaniment of her written thesis, which explores the lack of racial representation in science fiction and fantasy media. Science fiction and fantasy media often explore matters of discrimination faced by minorities—without actually featuring any minority characters. Uprising subverts this, because while it does use the fictional device of necromancy to discuss the very real problems of racism, it does this while featuring a main cast of color.

Racism, discrimination, and the protests against it are getting real mainstream media attention for the first time since the sixties. The internet and social media have made sharing information and organizing protests and movements easier than it's ever been before. It is often questioned whether art shapes society of reflects it - with Uprising, we are attempting to do both.

Risks and challenges

Making a film is not an easy process. Even before we begin shooting, a huge amount of effort has to go into budgeting, securing location permits, casting, hiring crew members, and of course, finding funding. Going through rigorous pre-production insures that our time on set will go as smoothly as possible. A well prepared crew is absolutely necessary for shooting some of our more ambitious scenes, some of which include practical effects or large crowds. Uprising’s greatest challenge will be creating these large scale action sequences and bringing them to life on screen.
We need everyone’s support, even if you can’t donate. You can still help us by spreading the word to friends and family!
