About

The Project:

The Spirit of a Child is an interactive web-documentary that focuses on the lives of twenty-nine children housed in Mama Laadi's Home, formerly known as Operation Mango Tree, under the care of Mama Laadi. The project will combine portraits, testimony, data and various forms of personal art expression to tell the stories that were close to being unspoken. The Spirit of a Child is set in Ghana and strives to bring awareness to the struggles in which the children and Mama Laadi face: the public rejection and stigmatism as well as the discontinuation of funds from their primary NGO supporter.

Purpose & Aspiration:

The moment I met Mama Laadi I felt an instantaneous connection to her and the children in Bolgatanga, Ghana and once I heard their stories it changed everything. I was compelled to act and assist when news surfaced about their NGO sponsors eliminating its presence in Ghana. So, how does a former teacher, published poet and travel photographer help? Rather than make a cry for help campaign using photos and on the ground advocacy, I’m presenting a visual story that will encompass interactive elements to highlight the experiences happening within the walls of Mama Laadi's Home. Ideally, the documentary will speak to NGO audiences encouraging sustainable support for the orphanage.

Background:

I spent my last summer working in various parts of Ghana. Most of my time was spent in the Upper East region in a small town called Bolgatanga. Of the time I contributed in Bolga overseeing a community service project I met a wonderful woman who was the mother of a few dozen children. After hearing her story aligned with many of the spirit children of the home I wanted to work in a way that could greatly contribute to the children's home.

A spirit child or witch is a label given a to a young one who has been born of deformities, born at the time as a family's misfortune or their natural mother passes from birth complications. The child is often given a poisonous concoction from an elder and dismissed to the afterlife. Mama Laadi has rescued many of these children and assisted with giving them a second chance at life.

Project Outcome Goals:

If we were to look back at this project  three & five years from now. There are a few things I hope that are accomplished:

  • The Spirit of a Child touched thousands and encouraged just as many private funders to support Operation Mango Tree in Bolgatanga.
  • The project reached NGO audiences who offered long-term support for the efforts that Mama and her staff need to be sustainable + encourage growth within the organization due to funding.
  • We empowered the kids of Mama Laadi's Home to minimize the strength of the stigmatism and speak of their own stories and journey.
  • An online interactive world for the global community to understand the stigmatism and journey the children and Mama Laadi experience in Upper East Ghana.

Fundraising Ambitions:

The more money we raise the more children we can feature in the interactive website, so help us communicate the voices of Mama Laadi's Home through a donation today!

Your donation will help bring this interactive documentary to life. Beyond the experience you'll be providing to those who will view this project, we have some cool rewards to offer as well.

Risks and challenges

The most foreseeable challenge concerning the project is the limited funds. It is a challenge considering the fact that money could be contributed directly to the home by donation, but I feel the direction of the project could accumulate more funds for Mama Laadi and Operation Mango Tree than on the ground fundraising. The goal is to reach audiences that could provide sustainable funding in order to keep Operation Mango Tree thriving.
