Third and Fourth stretch goals unlocked!

Thanks to the amazing community of support that has formed around this project, we met our initial goal in six days and our first two stretch goals nine hours after they were announced (see descriptions below).  Our third stretch goal, announced on Thursday, September 21, was unlocked after about three days, and our fourth stretch goal, announced on Monday, September 25, was unlocked in an hour and a half!

Thank you to everyone who has joined this project so far, and welcome to those of you who become backers in the final hours!

**********************************************************************************************

Stretch Goal #3 was unlocked in the wee hours between September 24 and 25: If we double our goal and hit $24,000, every backer--regardless of the dollar level--can nominate one school, community center, library, or other non-profit organization in their community and Orion will donate a one-year subscription to that organization.

Stretch Goal # 4 was unlocked on September 25: If the Kickstarter campaign raises $2,400 in its last 24 hours (for a grand total of $26,813) a mother and daughter have pledged to donate $10,000 directly to Orion. These funds will go toward helping REvolve reach more people, and toward creating future issues of Orion too.

**********************************************************************************************

Stretch Goal #1 was unlocked on September 21: If the campaign hits $20,000, we will add a mini broadside--an illustrated poem--bound into REvolve. Printed on heavy, matte paper, the piece will be perforated so you can easily tear it out to hang on your wall, share with a friend, or even frame it. We have the poet and illustrator lined up but we're keeping that a secret until the stretch goal is unlocked.

Stretch Goal #2 was unlocked on September 21: If we get 80 new backers (raising the total number to 514 or more), we will add 8 pages to REvolve so that we can include more photography and visual art in two of the text features and in the special section on Standing Rock.

**********************************************************************************************

OUR STORY

Where does the body end and nature begin?

What does water mean to women at Standing Rock?

How does a decorated Iraq war veteran decide to become an anti-war activist and organic farmer?

What makes five average people put life and liberty on the line to break into the Keystone Pipeline and shut off the flow of oil?

Is there a spiritual answer to the climate crisis?

What are the turning points--personal or global--at which we realize that we must change our lives?

These are the questions that we'll explore in REvolve, a special issue of Orion published in celebration of the magazine's 35th anniversary.

On 72 totally ad-free pages, Orion Magazine will bring together writing and art that help makes sense of some of the most urgent issues of our time: climate, justice, energy, faith, food, education, and community. The end result will be an artfully designed, high print-quality magazine that will help you think about this moment in the relationship between people and nature, how we got here, where we're going, and what it means to be a citizen of the Earth.

CONTRIBUTORS

The special issue will feature work from celebrated photographer Camille Seaman, writer-philosopher-activist Kathleen Dean Moore, writer and spiritual educator Fred Bahnson, a special section of work by eight Native women writers (Natalie Diaz, Heid Erdrich, Louise Erdrich, Jennifer Foerster, Joy Harjo, Toni Jensen, Layli Long Soldier, and Deborah Miranda), and many others.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

There are lots of places in print and online you can go to find information about the environment and how to live a greener life.  Less common are deep inquiries into the big questions about humanity's relationship to the natural world and honest, complex explorations into what it means to our emotional lives to be confronting climate change, the sixth extinction, and other anthropogenic changes that are irrevocably altering life on Earth.

Furthermore, our society is not in the habit of looking to the arts for guidance on how to respond—internally and externally—to the environmental challenges and circumstances we face in the 21st century.  But, in fact, the arts help us understand how we feel, who we want to be, and thus how we want to live on this changing planet.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL MAKE HAPPEN

The literary and visual arts don't just spring into being spontaneously, however.  Artists need to be paid for the art they make, and they need platforms in order to reach readers and viewers.  And the platforms that help their work reach people need to be supported too.  A typical magazine relies on advertising for 70% of its operating budget (subscriptions pay for just 30% of expenses), but Orion is ad-free, believing that every inch of every page should be devoted to the writing and visual art our readers expect and that the world needs to see.  At Orion we rely instead on individual donations and subscriptions to bring writing and art to a wide and diverse public.

The funds from this Kickstarter campaign will go toward author and artist fees, design and picture editing, and other pre-press expenses.

OUR STORY

Since 1982, Orion has brought together the most important writers, artists, and thinkers of our time to grapple with questions at the intersections of nature and culture.  Unique among environmental organizations for its arts-based approach, and unique among arts publications for its focus on environment, Orion seeks to articulate a vision for how humans can live more peacefully, justly, joyously, and sustainably on Earth.  We publish between four and six print editions per year, as well as digital and multimedia content on our website, blog, digital editions, and social media.

We are a small staff based in two offices in Western Massachusetts, along with several staff members who work remotely from around the country.  In addition to our publishing activities, we also run an annual writer's conference in cooperation with the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference at Middlebury College.

Orion is totally ad-free, and endeavors to live up to the lives of the trees it is printed on.  We print on FSC-certified, recycled-content, chlorine-process-free paper with vegetable inks, of course.

Thanks to our backers, this project met its goal in less than one week. Wow. In the second week it grew to 140% of the goal, roughly $17,500 as of this writing!

This is amazing news, but it leaves us with a question: what else can we do together to make REvolve even more poignant, beautiful, and satisfying for backers and other Orion readers? Thanks to the amazing community of support that has formed around this project, today we are announcing three stretch goals for the last five days of the campaign. Here they are:

Stretch Goal #1: If the campaign hits $20,000, we will add a mini broadside--an illustrated poem--bound into REvolve. Printed on heavy, matte paper, the piece will be perforated so you can easily tear it out to hang on your wall, share with a friend, or even frame it. We have the poet and illustrator lined up but we're keeping that a secret until the stretch goal is unlocked.

Stretch Goal #2: If we get 80 new backers (raising the total number to 514 or more), we will add 8 pages to REvolve so that we can include more photography and visual art in two of the text features and in the special section on Standing Rock.

Stretch Goal #3: If we *double* our goal and hit $24,000, every backer--regardless of the dollar level--can nominate one school, community center, library, or other non-profit organization in their community and Orion will donate a one-year subscription to that organization.

Thank you to everyone who has joined this project so far, and welcome to those of you who become backers now!

Risks and challenges

Orion has been in publication for 35 years. We have weathered numerous changes in the publishing industry, in the funding landscape, in the non-profit community, and in our organization's internal structure.

We've been raising money from readers for most of our three-and-a-half decades, but this is our first Kickstarter campaign and we're counting on you to help us make this effort a success. Given all the changes in publishing and media, it's essential that Orion find new sources of community support in order to flourish. We hope that Kickstarter can be part of that.

Our design, print, and distribution network is all already in place, and the authors and artists listed as contributors are under contract. If this campaign is successful we can guarantee that REvolve will go to press and be shipped to all backers.

Full disclosure: we will need to continue to raise money after this campaign concludes in order to continue to publish in 2018 and beyond, and thus fulfill the backer rewards that include subscriptions, but we've got a 35-year track record of doing just that.
