About

The exhibit

Fields of Mud, Seeds of Hope is a unique sculptural piece commemorating the sacrifices made by the generation who served during the Great War and the legacies the conflict created.

Composed using battlefield mud from Passchendaele and earth taken from a Great War military camp in the U.K the work starts thoroughly soaked. As the wet mud dries and cracks the five battle weary silhouettes gradually appear, trudging home their backs to the past and facing the future.

Deep within the mud millions of ungerminated poppy seeds lay dormant.

When decommissioned segments of the sculpture comprising of the dried earth and seeds will be made available to the public to create their own artworks or memorial gardens. The profits of which used to support various charities dealing with the effects of conflict, therefore allowing the legacy of the work to continue in another from indefinitely.

The inspiration behind the project, was:

"To take a material symbolic of struggle that every soldier would have been overly familiar with, and whilst respectfully recognising the sacrifices of those both returned and otherwise, to form it into a hopeful work that looks to the future."

As the mud dries it changes colour, gradually cracks and over a period of weeks slowly reveals the silhouettes of our five figures returning from battle.

Creation / preparation

As with so many exhibits and installations, most of the hard work is done before hand. This is certainly true of this project. The journey started four years ago with only a hunch that it would work. Working with soil and water and trying to understand how the two elements effected and interacted with one another has been a long, sometimes frustrating but in the end a hugely enjoyable experience.

The creation of this piece and the numerous trials beforehand have been extremely time consuming as each trial takes a good few weeks to dry out. The only real way to test that the concept would even work to start with was a lot of trial and error and a good dose of intuition.

"There are four differing factors in the creation of each piece that need managing: soil composition, moisture, environment and time, the gradual knowledge and understanding of each has made me a real bore at parties."

A number of early experiments failed for different reasons, this iterative approach giving Dan a better understanding of this sensitive material. With initial experiments done on the kitchen table Dan has gradually upscaled and done later experiments in garden sheds, old horse boxes, wagon bodies and has now found a huge shed with similar conditions to the cathedral, in which to conduct the final trials.

The piece is 9m long by 3m wide (29.5ft by 9.8ft), so each figure is approximately 1.5x taller than a person. To give you a hint at the scale, here's dan at work checking the progress of the dry-run:

Dan with the dry-run
Dan with the dry-run

The mud needed to be excavated from site at the point of optimum moisture content for grading and casting not helped by this years unusually wet spring.

To learn more about the creation and preparation of the exhibit (including why many attempts didn't work) please back either the book or one of the meet the artist events.

Ripon Cathedral - The installation location

Ripon Cathedral, installation location
Ripon Cathedral, installation location

Perched at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Ripon 100 years ago was one of the largest military camps in the U.K. Seeing over a million men pass through during the 4 years of the war. It's, now sleepy, fields saw personnel from all over the Commonwealth train for and return from the Great War. The war poet Wilfred Owen wrote many of his poems here whilst recuperating and spent the afternoon of what was to be his final birthday within the walls of the Cathedral.

Fields of Mud, Seeds of Hope will be open to view from Wednesday the 3rd October to Wednesday 14th of November 9:30PM to 17:00PM. The exhibit is FREE to visit.

For more information on the history of Ripon cathedral, please see their website.

The team

Dan Metcalfe - lead artist

Dan studied Agriculture at both Askham Bryan and Bishop Burton colleges. After a short time farming the family farm he set up as a landscaper in an attempt to find an outlet for his growing creativity. Whilst no longer in agriculture he remains in touch and influenced by the land, nature and the elements and uses his landscapes as a canvas to create, incorporating his earthy love of nature and rural Yorkshire upbringing.

Dan had the inspiration for the creation of this piece over four years ago now and it has rapidly become his passion. The creating and casting of trial pieces, learning a little more with each success and failure whilst all the while researching the time period and grappling with its complexities has become a real labour of love. "It has been my aim all through this project to search for the hope in amongst the tragedy whilst still honouring the ultimate sacrifice made by many and remembering the many more who returned home carrying the legacies of war. I have been deeply humbled by the people I have met and the stories I have heard during the process am immensely proud of the team who have striven to create this work"

Jeanne Mundy - artist

Jeanne works from a log cabin studio situated on farmland in Nidderdale, surrounded by sheep, which provide inspiration for much of her work. Landscapes tend to depict big skies, remote hamlets, barns and ancient farm buildings. Paintings of Swaledale often reflect the tough winters endured by the hardy Dalesbred sheep that roam across the sparse terrain. In contrast, other work is inspired by holidays abroad where the focus is on light, shadows and colour. Subjects include scenes from sea and country, towns and villages, portraits, and still life, using a range of media including water-colour, acrylic, charcoal, pen, pencil and ink. Her work is diverse and wide-ranging, sometimes experimental, and is always developing.

Jeanne created 3 of the 5 silhouettes of figures featurein the piece and has a deep passion for the subject matter. She has also created a number of art works surrounding the sculpture using soil both from the battlefields and the site of a WW1 military hospital here in the U.K.

To see more of Jeanne's work please check out her website.

Joe Priestley - video and tech

Joe is a trained archaeologist and historian, working largely in public engagement. He is a lover of photography and film making, sharing his learning through those mediums with the widest possible audience.

Joe has worked in the performing arts, heritage sector and for national organisations such as the National Trust and Church of England. He is currently working at Nosterfield Local Nature Reserve, the Vision Project, Sharow and Beningbrough Hall.

Joe filmed and edited the video, which is featured both here and on the website. Joe has also built the website and assisted with preparing the designs and images.

Together

The whole team and other volunteers will be working to promote the exhibit and kickstarter as well as creating the rewards, assisting with queries and fulfilment.

Rewards

The First World War is a subject which deserves our utmost respect and appreciation of those who fought for us. To this end we feel it is important to apply the same levels of quality and detail to our rewards as we do the exhibit. This will therefore make our unit costs more expensive, however we believe it's important for this emotive subject.

Due to laws relating to ecological security, we cannot ship soil to a number of countries. Please note that only the countries listed have been checked for legal permissions to send soil and/or poppy seeds. If your country is not listed and you believe these restrictions don't apply, please contact us.

Timelapse

A digital download of both the dry-run and final piece. These will show the figures slowly emerging from the mud, similar to the gif above, but with hundreds of photos. The materials will not be for distribution and images of the whole piece will not be permitted until the exhibit is decommissioned.

Digital downloads

Contains the time lapse above as well as a selection of photographs taken throughout the life of the project. A selection of photos will also be prepared for use as computer backgrounds or screensavers, and phone & tablet home or lock screens at different resolutions. The images can also be used to rotate your background every few minutes / hours, by computers which support it, allowing you to watch the project lifecycle on the desktop.

Greeting cards

A unique greeting card, designed by Jeanne, to accompany the piece. The reward will feature 5 copies of the final design. The cards are remembrance themed and will be blank inside.

This potential card design features the three different remembrance flowers. The Commonwealth poppy, the French cornflower and the German forget-me-not; all emerging from cracks in a war torn battlefield. This particular card was created using a sprinkle of soil from Passchendaele and the UK site.

Please note that the final design is subject to change.

Steel figures

6" metal figures
6" metal figures

These 6" high steel figures are laser cut silhouettes of any of the five featured in the exhibit or a Scottish rifleman returning from the front. Sadly we just could not fit the Scottish rifleman into the final piece due to space restrictions but felt he needed to be shown to the world. After the Kickstarter has closed we will collect orders on which figure you'd like to receive.

If you would like multiple figures, please multiply your pledge by the number of figures required and we will collect orders on which figures you'd like to receive after the Kickstarter has closed.

A segment of the exhibit

After the exhibit has finished, due to it's size, it will be dismantled inside the cathedral and broken into irregular chunks following the cracks created by the process. Each broken segment contains ungerminated poppy seeds and can either be planted to create your own remembrance garden or used to create other artworks. The segments of the exhibit will be divided into a limited number irregular pieces, each fitting within a 15cm x 9cm x 4cm (5.9" x 3.5" x 1.6") box custom made to fit comfortably into your palm. The boxes feature the five silhouettes foil pressed on to the lid with the segment of earth wrapped in poppy red tissue paper inside.

Please note that due to laws relating to ecological security we can only ship to the UK at this time.

The coffee table book

The book is our opportunity to share a deep insight into the full lifespan of the project. From the initial designs and illustrations; through the many frame designs, casts and learnings of using this unpredictable material; to the installation, display and disassembly of the final piece. All providing insight into the artistic thinking and inspiration behind this unusual and insightful piece. The quality of the book is important to us and has increased the costs of this tier.

The print

A 61cm by 20cm (24" by 8") landscape print of the final piece, signed by the artist. Printed on 100 year light-fast, acid free, fine art paper; these will be the first permitted prints of the entire piece. The print will be from a high definition full colour photograph of the final exhibit. This will show the five silhouettes marching back from battle as seen below. The final image won't be available until the exhibit is complete (and the mud is dry); the image below is just to give and indication of what it will look like.

Silhouettes used in the piece
Silhouettes used in the piece

The Lone Soldier

The Lone Soldier
The Lone Soldier

The Lone Soldier will stand separate from, but close to the primary piece. As it will have been cast and dried some weeks before the main piece to ensure it will be at peak contrast on the very first day of the installation. Early visitors to the exhibit will see the work in its primal form, evenly levelled (rather like drying concrete) with little hint as to what lies beneath. This is all part of the experience and visitors are encouraged to come back over the course of the exhibit to see the forms gradually emerge as both the colour and contrast change and the cracked outlines appear. However for visitors who are unable to return later The Lone Soldier, set and partially dried will serve as a foretaste of what the final piece will look like a few weeks into the exhibition.

The Lone Solider will not be disassembled, as the main piece will be. It will be installed and removed as a single unit, making it the only part of the exhibit to be shown in Ripon Cathedral and made available to the public as-is. This is therefore a very unique piece.

The unique piece contains the earth which makes up both the silhouette and background, and also the frame in which The Lone Soldier will be displayed.

The piece is 2.4m long, 1.2m wide and several inches deep. Please be aware that depending on where The Lone Soldier is to be re-homed we may need to recast the work in situ, due to his size and access restrictions, this may cost extra. We need easy access which is over 1.2m wide to install the piece cast. If we need to recast the piece then it will require a number of site visits to ensure the piece forms as expected; causing the additional expense. If you feel access may be an issue please contact us before backing tier.

Due to the bio laws which control the import of soil into a country we are currently only offering this inside the UK. However if you're interested in this reward and would like it delivered outside the UK, please get in touch and we can investigate the legal and logistical challenges for your specific country.

Risks and challenges

1) The exhibition is delayed or cancelled. There is always the chance with any exhibit that the location (Ripon Cathedral) may have an unexpected issue which results in the installation being delayed or cancelled. This is highly unlikely at this stage as Ripon Cathedral have been consistently encouraging and excited about the project. In the event that the installation is cancelled we will cast the piece, hopefully somewhere the public can enjoy it, then proceed with phase 2 as planned; ensuring our backers get their reward, even if it's delayed.

2) The mud doesn't set right. It has taken Dan four years and a lot of painstaking effort to design and create a consistently repeatable and reliable process, but at the end of the day earth is a natural material and can act unpredictably. Many trial runs have been undertaken and the process refined to a point where we feel it is extremely unlikely a miss cast will occur.

3) Dan falls under a bus. We really hope this one doesn't happen! If it did we would attempt to complete the project on his behalf if it's already been cast. If it hasn't been cast, and Dan is unable to supervise, we'd look to issue refunds.

Segment & steel silhouette combo (EB)

The 6" stainless steel figures are laser cut silhouettes of any of the five featured in the exhibit or a Scottish rifleman returning from the front. The silhouettes are hand finished and include a slotted wooden base.

If you would like multiple figures, please add £25 to your pledge for each additional figure required.

We will collect orders on which figures you'd like to receive after the Kickstarter has closed.

Whether you choose to plant the piece and watch the poppy seeds hidden within grow into your own remembrance garden, or to keep it intact for prosperity; the tier gives the best of both from the book and piece options.

The segments of the exhibit will be divided into a limited number irregular pieces, each fitting within a 15cm x 9cm x 4cm (5.9" x 3.5" x 1.6") custom made boxed. The boxes feature the five silhouettes on top and each segment is carefully packed in red tissue paper.

    Includes:
    • 6" stainless steel silhouette
    • Boxed segment of the final exhibit
    • Backgrounds, lockscreens and screensavers
    • Digital time lapse of the final exhibit
