About

Limited edition exclusive clutch bags co created by Refugee Artisans and Feryaal Akthar - British Asian Fashion Designer

UK Fashion Designer Feryaal Akhtar has designed this exclusive limited edition  clutch bag with artisans from the Swat Valley.

Feryaal Akhtar is an up and coming British Asian Fashion Designer.  She has designed a limited edition hand embroidered bag.  These bags will be hand embroidered by female artisans from the Swat Valley.  Yes, the same Swat Valley where Malala Yousafzai ( the youngest nobel peace prize winner) comes from.

Artisans from this region are rebuilding their lives and are struggling to meet the demands of the global economy, even though they are experts in their trade.  For example, international supply chain compliance concerns like working from home impact their lives in a big way.

So, Feryaal has designed a limited edition bag, which will be produced by these artisans.  Each bag will create 4 days of work for each artisan. These artisans are experts in their field, however they are finding it difficult to find work as artisans.  They prefer to use trade as opposed to aid to help them rebuild their lives.

Feryaal is an up and coming British Pakistani design graduate.  She is currently building her brand as a fashion designer - with you help she can build her brand and get that vital break to  build her career.

Renee Elliott founder of Planet Organic will be helping Feryaal build her fashion business via Beluga Bean for supporting Refugee Artisans.  Why don't you join her as well?

You can use your power as a consumer to help an up and coming British Asian Fashion Designer build her brand.

Artisans working on your beautiful bags

This is an example of an artisan who will be working on your bag. Her name is Yaysala.  She will benefit from the beautiful bags you are buying.  Each bag you buy will generate 4 days worth of work for artisans like her.

Vaysala is a grandmother, who is an expert artisan.  She has to work from home because she finds it difficult to travel and move about generally.    She will be working on your products while she babysits her grand kids as well.  The international compliance standards she will be meeting have been co-created by Build a Nest Foundation and the fashion industry.

This means she will be working to standards accepted to be eco and ethical.  In a part of the world, where social welfare support is not available.  This kind of work is really helpful.  Our local delivery partners partners will be paying her 25% above the local market rate for her services.  She will also be supported in meeting international compliance standards for working from home.

Each beautiful bag you buy will support the Swat Valley with meeting these UN Sustainable Development Goals -

Easter Break Trip to Meet the Makers

You can also visit the Swat Valley over Easter Weekend and meet the people working on your beautiful bags.  You will be able to learn about the full process each item goes through.  You can visit the local artisans ecosystem.  Learn first hand how the yarning, weaving, dyeing and embroidery process has worked for over a hundred years.  You can even produce a scarf for yourself if you like and use organic dyes in real life.

Please note: This package is a 7 nights tour organised with an experienced tour specialist who is registered with the PTS. 4 days will be spent in the Swat Valley.  This package does not include flights, insurances, meals & visas.  It does cover all the workshops, local tours, breakfast, local travel and accommodation.

So, what happens next?

When you buy your beautiful bags and this campaign is complete.  We will send the order for your limited edition bags to the Swat Valley Guild.  They are members of  Build a Nest Foundation.   This means they will make sure your bags are made in an ethical and eco-friendly way using international standards.

You can expect this quality of artisanship for your limited edition exclusive bag.   It will take around 6 weeks from the completion of the campaign.  We will then post the bags to you along with the stories of the designers and artisans who have made all of this happen.

Risks and challenges

- Bags are hand embroidered by female artisans. This means if the artisan is taken ill then there may be a delay. However, these delays are not common.

- The trip to the Swat Valley is designed to help you interact with the local artisans. Please note. There are cultural and communications differences you should be aware off. There will be a translator, however, this risk will still be present.

- Due to unforeseen circumstances / force majeure such as extreme weather conditions dates and or itinerary of the tour may be changed.
