Hi, I’m David Laird. A multi award winning graphic artist for the movie industry but above all a devoted and passionate movie enthusiast. From Worldwide blockbusters to low budget French movies, mainstream horrors to rare Japanese thrillers, name a movie and I’ll be sure to have an opinion on it. I have worked as a graphic artist for over 15 years and more recently made the transition to movie poster artist around 6 years ago. I’ve worked with some great producers, actors and writers to bring their movies to life, in a poster format, which is a lot trickier than people might expect.
These days a lot of movies don’t have the marketing budget or large distributor backing to be able to publish a movie trailer on the TV and they have to rely on the power of the internet or in most cases the power of the poster/advert/billboard. This is where people like me come in. We work with the production company to produce an image that can capture the audiences attention in a split second, at one glance. This artwork is then transferred to the DVD/Blu-Ray cover and more regularly now, onto platforms such as Netflix and Box Office. People say do not judge a book by it’s cover but lets face it, we are all a little guilty of judging a movie by its DVD sleeve. If it looks good, we’ll pick it up and read more, especially if there are no well known actors involved that can sell the movie instantly.
Okay that’s my background, now onto the project that has been two years in the making. I wanted to create a collection of four art pieces for the movie eras that are most important to me, the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s but I wanted to do so in a way that was unique. I wanted to describe a movie visually with a symbol or moment that would instantly make this recognisable to the audience and very much utilising the famous phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words".
My concept was to depict the very best movies of each era based on factors such as box office success, Oscar nominations and cult status, but ultimately movies which I admire and stand out most for me. These are spread across every genre from children’s movies to horrors, action blockbusters to low budget indie hits but all of which are renowned in one way or another for their success. My aim was to then capture each movie in one graphic image using my creativity and also my design skills.
I am going to let the images do the talking now. I hope you like them as much as I have enjoyed creating them as these have been a part of my life for almost two years now and I’m delighted to have finally found a platform in Kickstarter which can help share them with the world.
How long did you just spend looking at each poster? Several minutes? That is the effect that they will have on every guest or visitor that sees them.
These exclusive art prints will look great on your wall in a frame and would make a great gift for the movie fan in your life.
