That is the number required to pay for printing, shipping, writing, editing, art, and all the additional expenses that are required to go from idea to print/PDF.
The members of Mechanical Muse Team do not receive any of this money. We're doing our work without pay. We're putting in some serious sweat equity to get this thing off the ground.
One of the missions of Mechanical Muse is to "do it right." We are bringing in the best people we can to work on this, so we want to ensure that every person is getting paid true professional rates.
Too often the expense of doing things the right way gets pushed onto the creative people contributing to it in the form of reduced pay. The refrain "there just isn't enough to pay you more" is a common one. I believe that by spreading the cost out through Kickstarter where each person pays a small portion of it, we can keep the costs down for the individual backer while ensuring we're paying people what they SHOULD get. I'm tired of seeing people scrape by for some of the most important work on a project.
Again - this doesn't raise prices for all of you. It just means we need to get a lot more people involved. It's a risk I'm willing to take because I'd rather do it right or not at all.
