Several major scores by Sir Arnold Bax only exist in hand-written form and are difficult to read as well as usually being littered with errors. Scores like the Symphonic Variations for piano and orchestra are virtually unplayable owing to the condition of the existing score. The purpose of the First Phase of this project is to raise enough funds to be able to commission a new set of orchestral parts and conductors' scores for the Symphonic Variations -- and then, if successful, to do the same for the Seventh Symphony, the Violin Concerto, and perhaps other Bax scores. The copyright to these scores is owned by Warner/Chappell and they have given this Project permission to raise funds and commission new parts and scores that will then be given over to Warner/Chappell and distributed by them to anyone wanting to study or perform these works. The pianist Ashley Wass recorded the Symphonic Variations for Naxos in 2008. He would love to be able to play the work in concert but he says the poor condition of the score makes that virtually impossible to do. He says: "I'm delighted to support this terrific project. Having recorded the Symphonic Variations a few years ago, I can testify to the difficulties encountered when trying to decipher the score and parts in their current condition. During the recording sessions an enormous amount of energy was wasted querying Bax's indecipherable scribblings; such problems slow the interpretive process greatly and act as a major obstacle to live performances, which are normally afforded only limited rehearsal time. "Of all the pieces of Bax I recorded, the Symphonic Variations was, by far, the one I felt most deserving of greater public awareness. A new set of parts and score would help encourage pianists, conductors and orchestras to commit to live performances of this highly engaging work." Please help restore a major score by a great 20th Century British composer by supporting this Kickstarter Project. Thank you.
Risks and challenges
The first challenge was to secure permission from Warner/Chappell to commission a new set of printed parts and score to music that is under copyright to them. They have been extremely supportive and are permitting this project to go forward with the understanding that the new materials be given to them upon completion. The world's leading authority on Bax's manuscripts, Graham Parlett, will input, edit and print the new parts. His involvement in this project assures its integrity and success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
