About

A short description of the game

The Imhotep Labyrinth is a game specially developed for the blind but at the same time can be played with persons who have normal vision; thereby providing a level of interaction between the two groups in a strategic game, that would not normally be possible.

The Creator

The Imhotep Labyrinth was created by Johannes W. Schröder, who over the years had created a number of different board games. The idea for this game originated from when Johannes was working for an organisation dealing with the transportation of handicapped people in Hamburg, Germany. One of the patients, a young blind woman said that the games he had created so far were not challenging enough for her. Johannes rose to the challenge posed, which eventually led to the creation and development of The Imhotep Labyrinth. We hope that this incident will now be beneficial to all blind and vision-impaired people all over the world.

Why was the game developed?

Today, virtually all board games are developed for people who have normal vision. Games for the blind are normally games that have been developed for people that have vision, but have later been adapted so that blind people may also play them.

The Imhotep Labyrinth is a game that from the outset was developed for the blind but with the aim of also allowing people with normal vision to participate. In effect, the game can be played by everybody. There was no necessity to adapt an already existing game.

The result is an extraordinary game that the WBU (World Blind Union) considers to be very helpful and supportive in their efforts to integrate the blind into normal everyday society. At the same time, we hope that due to the natural interaction that occurs during the course of a game, barriers between the blind and those that can see will be removed; and that attention is drawn to the challenges that the blind have to face every day, due to their lack of vision.

Description of the game

The Imhotep Labyrinth is a board game produced in high quality ABS plastic materials. It consists of a playing field with depressions for 64 game stones, 4 game figures (pawns) that are able to stand on the game stones, a specially designed die and 36 playing cards. Furthermore, the rules of the game are printed in Braille as well as normal print.

A short description of how the game is played

The Imhotep Labyrinth is a strategic board game for 2-4 players. It can be played in 3 versions with varying degrees of difficulty. In the easiest version, it takes about 10 minutes to comprehend the rules and the following game lasts approximately 20-30 minutes. Once players have had some practice, then the most difficult version of the game can be played in approximately 45-60 minutes.

Johannes W. Schröder, of course is the most valued member of this launch. He has joined up with his long-term business partner Jan Jorgensen for this project as their individual competencies supplement each other very well and it was a natural choice for Johannes to get Jan on board.

They both enjoy helping people who do not generally receive a great deal of attention from the public eye or media outlets. Changing this focus is one of the driving forces behind the work with this launch.

Johannes and Jan build on each other’s strengths. They both have a heart for helping people in need. This is second nature to them, both as individuals and as business partners.

What are the Kickstarter funds to be used for?

If we reach our goal, we will be able to pay for the manufacture of the first edition of the game. We already have our manufacturers lined up and ready to go! Our manufacturers are very experienced and have launched numerous board games prior to this. We just need to raise the funds and say go! This first edition will turn one of our long-loved projects into something that our friends, families, and backers can enjoy.
