About this project
The Psychedelic Colouring Book brings together consciousness exploration, illustration and harm reduction. The astonishing visual elements of the psychedelic experience make it a perfect theme for an adult colouring book. But I think it can be more than that too…
Part colouring extravaganza and part harm reduction message, the Psychedelic Colouring Book will contain information on the main psychedelic substances including effects, safety profiles, dosage and advice. It is intended to de-stigmatise psychedelics as dangerous party drugs and to continue the conversation surrounded by art, acknowledging that giving people the facts both positive and negative will help them make the right choices for themselves and keep people safer in this black market world.
If this project is funded, The Big Dream is to sell the book beside a free colouring tent at festivals - somewhere calm and quiet people can escape to where there will be colouring sheets and colours, cushions, fairy lights, soft music and friendly company should you want it or need it.
But I am an illustrator first and foremost! I will pour my heart and soul into making this as gorgeous a book as I possibly can! There will be a mixture of shapes, types of illustrations and different levels of detail, but my work can be said to be characterised by plenty of detail and smooth, flowing lines.
I want to produce something that people will treasure; it takes a lot of careful hours to colour in colouring pages and I want to honour that time investment by giving you something you will love. I would be ever so thrilled if you gave me feedback and let me know what's working for you! Tell me what you like, what you don't like and what you want to see more of in the book.
- The book will be perfect bound and have thick, high-quality paper with at least 40 pages, to include at least 20 full-page illustrations.
- Each illustration will be printed on one side of the paper only so you never have to make a choice over which image to sacrifice if you want to cut one out and frame it or if your pens bleed (which they probably won't since I will be springing for the good paper!).
- Good quality, thick full-colour cover.
I run a little business teaching students one-to-one to supplement a traditionally pitiful income from professional illustration. I will keep my students and illustration commissions in order to make rent and such, hence the long project end date of July 2017. I think the launch of the finished book would be perfectly timed at the end of Spring ready for the Summer and also means I can take it to festivals as a newly-launched book.
If this project is overfunded, I will add fun embellishments, such as a fold-out double-page spread and foiling on the cover! But best of all, I will be able to afford to take fewer commissions and teach fewer students so I can use the extra funds to lengthen the number of pages in the book! The more it is over funded the longer it can be! The goal for this book is to have 20 illustrations as I can manage 2-3 full page illustrations a month with my current workload, but I have many more ideas than that!
Thank you for reading about my project, I hope you're as excited about it as I am!
Risks and challenges
The main barrier to my completing this project is being able to afford to spend the time doing it! Once funded, it will still be tight as I like to work carefully and deliberately, but I have given myself a realistic deadline of June 2017 to ensure that I am able to produce this book to the best of my ability and not need to rush through any pages. My style is admittedly time-consuming as I work entirely by hand in pencil, dip-pen and ink; I strive for good lines and lots of crisp detail, but I am a professional and used to working to deadlines - indeed, I find them motivating and helpful.
If the book attracts more funding than the minimum requirement the time commitment will be much less of a concern!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
