Annual perfectbound print journals that showcase the best of the indie press in fiction, nonfiction, historical works, and poetry.
UPDATE: Help us reach our NEW STRETCH GOAL of $4,000!
We have reached our funding goal, our first stretch goal, and our second stretch goal with your fantastic help, but we're still climbing! Help us reach our NEW STRETCH GOAL of $4,000. This stretch goal will fund five months' worth of stories on Go Read Your Lunch and help us fulfill our ultimate mission of making sure indie authors get paid for their talents and craft. We won't have to rely on gathering sponsors for five whole months, which means we can focus on bringing you fantastic stories instead! There are all-new stretch goal rewards in it for you (in addition to all the other stretch rewards you can find in the "updates" section), too! Please read our new update to learn more about the next step and why we still need your funding!
Who we are:
We are Alternating Current, an independent press that specializes in promoting and showcasing the best work of indie authors the world over. We work hard. We love our authors and our readers. We kick butt. The cut ‘n’ paste zine days found us armed with gluesticks and fine-tipped Sharpie markers twenty years ago; today’s digital landscape finds us with paperbacks, PDFs, blogs, websites, and social networks, but our heart is still the same and still bleeds pen ink, even if it is from the more upscale Pilot G-2 Ultra Fine 0.38’s these days. We will go to the wall for our authors. Heck, we’ve gone to court for our authors! (True story; ask us about it!) But we can’t do it without you. We have needs. We’re high maintenance and needy. But did I mention we kick butt?
Three birds; one massive stone
We hate to ask for handouts, so in our efforts to keep from soliciting any more than necessary, we lump our fundraising together. The more we can raise, the less we have to ask! So what are our three birds? We’re glad you asked.
Poiesis #6: A Literary Journal
Poiesis is our annual perfect-bound print journal that features the best of the independent press in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. It’s been through many a transformation, but has existed for years, giving a home to the cutting edge, unapologetic, rare, and powerful work of the small press. Issue #6 is wrapping up its layout phase and needs your help to cross the finish line. Because of the impressive quantity of authors and quality pieces each issue boasts, we need the funds to provide contributor copies for our authors and reading copies for review outlets, and to cover the cost of ever-increasing global shipping rates and book marketing. Please help us make Issue #6 a reality!

Footnote #1: A Literary Journal of History
In our twentieth year of publishing, we’ve noticed something missing from the independent press: contemporary views on history from real storytellers, not just academies. Well, hello, there, fellow history nerd, let me introduce you to Footnote, our brand spankin’ new perfect-bound literary print journal of historical and contemporary views on the people, places, events, and ideas of history that inspire and intrigue us—told through modern and historical fiction, creative nonfiction, essays, articles, maps, photographs, and poetry, from not only the voices of the independent press, but also from little-known, obscure, and still-relevant voices of the past. With your funding, we can make this inaugural issue a success and pay for contributor copies, review copies, and the endless marketing that goes into promoting a new journal.

Go Read Your Lunch: A Journal of Lunchtime Stories
And what is a lunchtime story, you ask? Why, it’s a story you can read over your lunchtime, of course! <shakes head> Silly question. On June 3rd, 2013, with your help and some crossed fingers, we hope to launch our brand new online journal of fiction, prose, creative nonfiction, columns, flash fiction, short stories, and/or epic prose poems, called Go Read Your Lunch. Stories will be posted Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and will be just long enough to read during your twenty-to-thirty-minute lunch break. What’s even cooler than that? We’ll be turning every story into a beautifully formatted, limited-edition Kindle download, as well, so readers can take each story home with them after lunch (or if your boss interrupts you right at the good part!). We hope to bring readers back day after day with our great prose selections, give a little jolt to your weekday mastication, and even better?—we’ll be paying our authors for their fine-honed craft. On launch day, we’ll help make that elusive fantasy of getting paid come true for indie authors!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Anything in the independent press always has some risks and challenges. This year marks our twentieth year in publishing, with over two hundred paperbacks and chapbook collections under our belt, including five previous issues of Poiesis already successfully published. We know how to market, how to distribute, and how to pull through, no matter the challenge. These projects have been paced and planned with enough time and care for success, and when funded (Not if! Of course we’ll succeed!), they will be shipped upon completion, conservatively fall 2013 for Poiesis #6 and winter 2014 for Footnote #1. If we run into any snags, we will communicate with our backers every step of the way.
If you are already slated to be in Poiesis #6 or Footnote #1, you will still receive your contributor copy on top of whatever prize you choose. So if you opt to get a copy in the sidebar, you will get two copies if your work is contained in the issue.
