My name is Rachel Baiman, and I'm a folk musician based out of Nashville, TN. After a couple years working as a side musician and as part of bands (10 String Symphony, Oh My Darling, Belfry Fellows), I am incredibly excited to be taking on my first solo project. It's going to require some great friends and collaborators, a lot of amazing independent music supporters, a bit of luck, and a ton of work, but it will be an absolute labor of love and I welcome the challenge!
Here is a bit about my vision:
I've loved spending time living and working both in Nashville, and Edinburgh, Scotland, and have been heavily influenced musically by both places. It's been my dream to create a project that brings together the cutting edge sounds of fiddle and folk music happening in Nashville and Scotland. Both of these places have vibrant folk music scenes, but there is little crossover between their musical paths. In Scotland, I hear fiddle tunes played over classical quartets and electronic soundscapes. In Nashville, I hear world-class improvisation over old-time tunes, and new sounds coming from extended bow techniques. To top it all off, I've found that often, my favorite musicians in Scotland have never heard the music of my favorite musicians in Nashville and vice versa.
So here is the idea:
I'm making a record of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs, recorded half in Dunkeld, Scotland, and half in Nashville, TN. The goal is to mix up material and musicians stylistically, and create a cohesive album incorporating new sounds in traditional music from both places; Old-Time recorded in Scotland with Scottish musicians, Scottish tunes paired with original tunes, recorded in Nashville. An old time song written by Gillian Welch, with Phil Cunningham on accordion...the possibilities are endless and so beautiful.
Here are just some of the amazing people who are going to be helping me create this music:
Matheu Watson: Engineer/Producer, Guitar (Scotland)
Marit Falt: 5-String Mandola
Phil Cunningham: Accordion
Erick Jaskowiak: Engineer/Producer (Nashville)
Dave Goldenberg: Mandolin
Andrew Small: Upright Bass
Brittany Haas, Christian Sedelmyer: Additional Fiddle
This past August, I began the recording process in Scotland, and the collaborations exceeded my wildest musical expectations.
I AM SO EXCITED TO SHARE THIS PROJECT WITH YOU.
I would love for you to get involved by pre-ordering the record, or choosing one of the other rewards such as taking a lesson with me, commissioning a composition, etc etc. Kickstarter is all about supporting independent creativity, so I've geared some of the rewards (such as making you a website, or teaching you a fiddle lesson) towards helping support YOUR creativity.
Another way to support this project is by simply sharing it, spreading the word among your music-loving friends or anyone who might be interested. I will be able to update my backers along the way with pictures, blogs, and videos. It's going to be a really amazing month.
Here is what I still have to pay for:
- Recording time in Nashville with the incredible Erick Jaskowiak
- The amazing musicians who will be contributing their talents to this half of the record
- Mixing and Mastering
- Physical production of the CD's
- Fees for Kickstarter (5%) and Amazon (3-5%)
Here is what your money will NOT go to:
- A whimsical vacation to Scotland. I recorded in Scotland this past August on the heels of a UK tour with Winnipeg based band Oh My Darling--check them out!
I had a blast, and that half of the record is all paid for, now I have to raise enough money enough to finish it!
THANK YOU so much for listening, for reading this, and for all of your continued support. People like you make it possible for independent musicians to continue recording and performing outside of the model set up by major record labels. I am so grateful to have many helpful mentors, friends, and supportive people in my life.
Risks and challenges
As with any project, things don't always go as planned. However, the hardest part of this project (planning everything out, finding a producer in Scotland, recording in another country) is already complete. I am now in the home stretch, recording with my good friends in Nashville and I am totally committed to finishing the project by January. As a musician, I rely on my professional reputation to work, and I rely on my personal relationships for friendship, food, and shelter while on tour. Therefore, you can feel confident that if you chose to support this project, your rewards will be honored, the album will be completed and music will be made!
However, Kickstarter is ALL OR NOTHING, which means that if I don't reach my goal, nobody will be charged for their contribution, and I won't get any of the money pledged. So let's make this happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
