The Emahoy Sheet Music Project aims to publish the complete works of the incredible composer Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou, so that her music can be played, performed, studied, and enjoyed by people throughout the world.
I had the privilege to meet Emahoy Guebrou this past April. She is delightful, easy going, brilliant, and energetic. I was able assess the amount of work to be done in order for Emahoy Guebrou to meet her goal. To say the least, it is plentiful, rich, and will be time consuming! It was an incredible week for both of us, and we quickly agreed that I must return.
I am able to return to Jerusalem this summer, where we will comb through her manuscripts, and prepare them for publishing. This Kickstarter is just the beginning of a lifetime of a work which has fallen into my hands, and as all of Emahoy's music serves a charitable purpose, I will not be getting paid.
Currently there are 16 of Emahoy Guebrou's pieces made famous by Ethiopiques Vol. 21 Ethiopia Song (Buda Musique 2006), which features only the solo piano music of Emahoy Tesgue-Maryam Geubrou.
So far, I have re-notated and performed 13 of the pieces from Ethiopiques Vol. 21. With only the recording and no original manuscripts, I listened to each piece and transcribed them in detail, and set out to embody her particular pianistic style through my interpretations.
Emahoy Geubrou has in her possession countless manuscripts of additional unrecorded works, including pieces for voice with original lyrics. As she has only performed recitals of her works a few times in her life, it is her desire that her music be published and that other musicians continue to play her music.
Between transcribing, practicing, and performing, I have already put in at least 500 hours of my time, free of charge. I also self-funded my initial flight, hotel, and other expenses in my previous trip to Jerusalem.
For my next trip, I simply ask for help paying for:
•the flight ($2000)
•basic living expenses ($600)
•supplies such as manuscript paper, pens, a recording device and microphone, and miscellaneous costs. ($400)
What if I exceed my goal?
The more financial support I receive, the more pieces can be published. The money will go towards cost of printing, cost of research, and any further related travel expenses.

Risks and challenges
Emahoy and I work together well, she speaks fluent English, but it is not her first language. It is possible that some compositions may be incomplete, or that there is no archival recording of the piece. In that case, Emahoy and I will have to work together to interpret her notation. This can be challenging, and if need be I will consult other experts for assistance.
Also, there could be challenges related to formatting the sheet music for printing. I intend to plan ahead and consult with experts to ensure that what I send to print will be accurate, legible, and beautiful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
