TTshirt collects used T-shirts from all over the world, cuts them in half (vertically), mixes the pieces and sews them back together to make a new garment. As the combination of two random used T-shirts is unlikely to happen twice, each piece is in fact unique, a piece of art in its own right!
When you purchase a TTshirt, you are not only getting your hands on a unique garment, but on fragments from the lives of two other human beings on this planet! You can also participate with your own used T-shirt (according to some basic rules), so that a piece of your own life might become the pride of a person on the other side of the world. When you participate in TTshirt are joining a global circle! Maybe you’d like to join in to own something special, for idealism or just for fun.
As well as offering a unique design, TTshirt carries a message of interconnectedness, participation and sharing between people around the world. (We even have a special cataloguing system to prevent combinations of T-shirts from the same place!)
The TTshirt manifesto:
TTshirt celebrates our inner beauty and not only our external appearance. The growing interest in fashion in the last decades is all too often at the expenses of our inner qualities. By wearing a TTshirt that manifests the casual encounter of two unrelated designs, we take distance from the glorification of branding and self-image. TTshirt celebrates our inner beauty.
TTshirt exalts interconnections among mankind, supporting cultural growth. By wearing pieces of clothing from unknown persons (who is possibly very different in religion, race, skin colour and financial status) we value another person’s life above limited corporations. TTshirt breaks down barriers and gives us freedom.
TTshirt reminds how many natural resources we waste. In fact we don’t need another T-shirt! If we open our wardrobe, we are likely to have more than enough T-shirts already. Buying clothes for the pleasure of consumption is turning into an illness. Knowing we don’t need another T-shirt, we can at least save the 2700 litres of water it takes to produce one. By recycling fabric, we save on natural resources. TTshirt stands for our mother Earth.
Each TTshirt is unique, as it is almost impossible that the same couple of used T-shirts coincide a second time. TTshirt exalts each person as an irreproducible miracle. TTshirt reminds us that every one of us is capable of doing something unique. It celebrates our inner strength and resources.. TTshirt makes us stronger.
TTshirt is funny. It’s kind of stupid wearing two old T-shirts patched together. It teaches us not to take life too seriously, pretending to be what we want to be. It invites us to follow our apparently irrational heart, and enjoy something unexpected makes us laugh. TTshirt makes us happy.
Make of a TTshirt
Our aim is to offer the tailoring of TTshirts as work to unemployed people or to those with a low income. We want you to feel the satisfaction of the TTshirt’s makers in your garment. Maybe we are too idealistic, but we want our TTshirts to be made with love.
Of course you could make your own TTshirt at home. Maybe you want to celebrate your friendship with someone from another country by combining your mutual T-shirts. Maybe the result won´t come out perfect, but the most important fact is the meaning behind it. And personally I've nothing against it.
If you try it, you will probably realize that there is quite a lot of manual work involved in making a TTshirt. And it’s quite an effort to produce a qualitative result. But we think it’s worth it!
If you would prefer to buy a TTshirt and support the message behind it, we have put a logo so that you can be sure it's an original. Original not only in the sense that we have made it, but we certify that it really comes from different people, from different part of the globe. Because we truly believe that the mixture of culture and ideas is a key factor in improving our society.
The logo, the double TT with two heads, is embroidered with white or black thread at the front of each T-shirt, on the bottom left hand side.
There is also a label on the neck with the MAD (Modern Art to Dress) motto. And finally the connection between the two sides starts at the front bottom with a small opening. You can read more about it on this page: a real TTshirt.
We are currently restricting the TTshirt to the following sizes: S, M, L. Working with used T-shirts from all over the world, we are confronted with a range of differences in clothing sizing, even when the label suggests the same size. This makes things complicated! We plan to expand our sizing offer at a later date. Please forgive us for this temporary limitation, which we are not entirely happy with ourselves.
Price : an affordable luxury
It is a luxury to own a TTshirt, but we have tried to make it an affordable luxury. Our research shows that the standard retail price of a premium A-brand t-shirt starts at 40€. Maybe this seems like better value than a t-shirt made of used cloth for then 28€.
Still we believe in people who value the difference between an industrial product repeated thousands of time and a unique product (art work) filled with life.
Let us, nevertheless explain our TTshirt price.
The current price of 28€ is based on a minimum production of 5000 t-shirts a year. We hope that in the next years we can recover most, if not all, of the investment made for this limited series on Kickstarter. After this launch, we may need to raise the price by around 20% to be cost-effective enough to run on a stable basis. As appreciation for your support at this early stage of production, we guarantee to anyone who has made a pledge the right to buy TTshirt products at the original price of this Kickstarter campaign, for one year long.

TTshirt idea's birth
The first idea for a TTshirt dates back to 2007, when I combined black and grey T-shirts and highlighted their junction with a coloured satin ribbon.
For me this combined T-shirt resonated with who I am, as someone with dual nationality with a perspective that has more to do with this coming together of things than any one identity. I sold some of these T-shirts in a hip store in Amsterdam, but the project never took off on a bigger level.
In early 2014, on hearing about the (TTIP Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), I thought to use my design skill to express my opposition. I had the idea to mix together T-shirts of famous brand from different political regions (China, USA; Russia etc.) as alternative to making even bigger corporations to promote few brands.
But I had various doubts about this project and set it aside.
In the end of summer 2015, while arranging my seasonal change of clothes, I came across a forgotten box of old T-shirts. They were nice t-shirts in perfect condition, but I knew that I would not wear them any more. That’s when the TTshirt idea popped back into my head. I started experimenting, cutting and mixing the pieces and really like the results. A few short weeks later, I came easily up with the idea to mix t-shirts from all around the world.
In October 2015 I asked 200 people (living in different European countries) to fill in a survey about the TTShirt. 63% were enthusiastic and a further 15% supported the idea behind the project. I decided to go on! Since then several new people have joined me. In the last months we've been working on technical details of the tailoring process. We are now ready to start with production!
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. If you have any suggestions or feedback, we would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!
Risks and challenges
The make of a TTshirt relay on two aspects : the collection of original second-hand t-shirts and the hand made production. For both of these operations there are factors which are not completely under our control (this is another reason why the TTshirt is so special).
Our target is to get the source t-shirts directly from the people. We need people like you who are believing in our project and are willing to participate.
In any case in the last months we have taken contact with organizations (mostly charities) in various countries dealing with used clothes, so to avoid any delay in collecting the source clothing.
We assign the manual work of making a TTshirt to unemployed or to people with a low income, because we believe that the satisfaction of these people will be transferred as well in the TTshirt they are making. Relaying on various single persons working by their own is not so easy as having one single company arranging everything. Still we believe in the work of our colleagues, and we are confident that we will deliver your TTshirt in time. We do not consider the option of failing. However, we understand that some things are out of our control, and there might occur a delay in the delivery process. No matter what, we will be in contact with you at every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
