"Maybe this is what happens when time moves on. Revolutions become part of the decor." - Linton, Hunter's Moon
Kismet: Hunter's Moon is a complete 340-page webcomic (the 360-page book includes backup stories and other extras) that was serialized online from 2002-2006. It originally appeared on Girlamatic, part of the Modern Tales family of sites. I'm currently serializing the sequel, Kismet: Sun-Cutter, here: http://suncutter.tumblr.com. New pages are posted on Mondays. You can also read all of Hunter's Moon online for free here: http://www.kismetcity.com/huntersmoon/
A centuries-old war flares into new life when intelligence agents (for the winning side) and freedom fighters/terrorists (from the losing side) clash in the backwater mining colony of Kismet. As their "simple" military intelligence operation spins out of control, both sides start to realize that the Kismetians, in the absence of any sort of functional government, have learned more than a few dirty tricks of their own ... and they aren't happy about being sucked into the middle of a fight that isn't theirs.
Kismet is a labor of love that began in 1992, when I invented this seedy little moon as the base of operations of a group of bounty hunters and corrupt customs agents. I've been planning to do a collected graphic novel since the webcomic ended in 2006 ... and, okay, ten years is a little longer than I had in mind, but better late than never, right?
Because color printing is expensive, I'm offering a cheaper black-and-white version; it's identical to the color version except, y'know, without the color, although it also includes a color digital download.
The cost of the books is as follows:
Black-and-white: retail price $20 + $5 priority mail shipping*
Color: retail price $45 + FREE priority mail shipping for U.S. backers!*
*There will be an extra $15 charge for non-U.S. backers to cover the cost of overseas shipping.
You can also get a bundle that includes Sun-Cutter #1 and #2. Each Sun-Cutter book is 60-70 pages, and Sun-Cutter #2 will be hot off the presses in September, so if you choose the bundle, you'll get an extra 130 pages of full-color story, and you'll be fully up to date on the latest Kismet storyline!
I'll be getting the Hunter's Moon books printed with the same printer that's doing Sun-Cutter, so this is approximately what they'll look like, and how big they'll be. (Except much thicker!)
I expect to have the books out in September, but October is the delivery date just to be on the safe side, especially if we unlock some of the more time-consuming stretch goals.
$2000 - This unlocks an add-on: for an extra $10, you can add a collected book of the Kismet short comics to any order. This book will be black & white and about 150 pages, and will include all of the Kismet short comics so far, including some that aren't online. I've been wanting to do a Kismet City Limits book (the side comics) for awhile now, and I hope we make this goal because I'd love to see this become a reality! You can read a number of the side comics here to see what you'd be getting.
$2500 - A new Kismet story! If we get this far, a brand-new 8-page Kismet comic will be included at no additional cost as part of all the digital packages (i.e. every backer will get it). This new story will also be included in the Kismet City Limits book.
Additional stretch goals will be revealed if we achieve these.
Kismet is a journey I've been on for -- heaven help me -- 25 years now, and I don't see it ending anytime soon; I'm hard at work on the next book, Sun-Cutter, and have more planned beyond that. Come be a part of it!
Risks and challenges
The entire comic is already done, so all that remains is the actual mechanics of putting the book together. I'm setting the completion date to October to allow for delays (I'm traveling a lot in late July and August), but I expect to have the books out in September.
I've been self-publishing since 2000, and have worked professionally as a typesetter and layout artist for almost two decades. While this is my first Kickstarter, I have plenty of experience at laying out books and fulfilling customer obligations in a timely fashion, so I'm not expecting any major delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
